2017 Pro Coogs

Only Coog Major Leaguer to be on an Opening Day roster is Austin Pruitt. Once the minor leagues start, I’ll try to track down where all the other Coogs are playing.

Pruitt was a bit unlucky yesterday against the Yankess as he faced three batters and all of them reached with one eventually coming in. None of the hits were hard hit, but sometimes that’s just the way the baseball bounces. His ERA is currently infinity.

Nick Hernandez assigned to the Astros High A team

It’s May now so everyone is getting settled into their teams. Here’s where everyone is at and how they’re doing so far. I’m leaving Chase Jensen on here until the Low A teams start, but it looks like he may have retired.

As a reminder, some of these guys may not have finished as Coogs (Poncedeleon and Moore), but they were all Coogs at one point.

Poncedeleon was immediately tended to by trainers for both teams and was surrounded by concerned teammates as well as Caratini on the mound. Upon being lifted onto the cart, Poncedeleon was able to wave to the crowd before being taken to an ambulance beyond the fence in right field.

First start at AAA

Ian Rice, C, Double-A Tennessee: The 29th-round pick in 2015 out of the University of Houston was attractive because of his high on-base percentage. In addition to a .425 on-base percentage, Rice hit four home runs during a nine-game span.

June Update on our Pro Coogs:

  • I dropped Chase Jensen as he still hadn’t been picked up by anyone
  • Bourn was released by Baltimore and picked up by the Angels
  • Rice was the best hitter this month
  • Pruitt struggled in the majors and was demoted, but has been since recalled. Only pitched in 2 games since he’s been back with Tampa: 1 good one vs. Texas, 1 bad one vs. Seattle
  • Poncedeleon is still out from being hit in the face.
  • Weigel was promoted to AAA. He’s only 22 so he’s moving quick
  • Lantrip and Moore should start up this month as the Rookie leagues get going in June
  • Nick Hernandez has been unhittable since the last update. In 9 games, he’s pitched 9 innings and given up 2 hits, no runs, walked 3 and struck out 16 while racking up 4 saves. Promotion to AA has to be coming soon.

Lantrip had shoulder surgery and is sitting out this year.
