A great read on the 50th anniversary

Of a momentous decision in Houston Sports history.

Really good read but you can forget about UT supporting UH to get in to the Big 12.

UT thought they could control us but the Coogs first three years in the SWC showed them otherwise. After a few decades they took their ball and went home or more blew up the SWC.

So you could say this was the beginning of the end of us being a factor on the national stage.

Three SWC Championships in the first 4 years set the stage.

And it may have been 4 SWC championships in 4 years if QB Danny Davis hadn’t separated his shoulder in second game of season at Penn State and was lost for the season after leading the Coogs to a season-opening win against UCLA on ABC.
Coogs played stout out of conference schedule.
I know Texas had a healthy Earl Campbell in 1977 but Davis took UH to the Cotton Bowl in 1976 and 1978 seasons and I would have liked UH’s chances to win 1977 SWC championship with a healthy Danny Davis.

I didn’t know that we shared tv money for all that time before they let us play. But we didn’t get anything from them.

AT THAT TIME THERE WERE TWO UH ALUMS ON
THE PUF FUND 5 MAN GROUP. THERE WAS A 3RD
MEMBER WHO FELT UH BELONGED IN THE SWC.
THE THREE MEMBERS MET WITH UT PRESIDENT
OF UT ABOUT SOME OTHER BUSINESS AND THE
PUF FUND CAME UP DURING THE MEETING. THEY
FELT THAT THE MONIES SHOULD BE SPREAD
AROUND INSTEAD OF UT GETTING 2/3 RDS OF THE MONIES. THIS WAS NOT ON THE AGENDA
BUT WAS BROUGHT UP DURING THE MEETING.
THE UT PRES WAS LIVID ABOUT THIS TOPIC. IN
LATER MEETINGS IT WAS BROUGHT UP AGAIN
AND THE THREE MEMBERS SAID IN A SURVEY
MOST PEOPLE WANTED IT BROKEN UP. AGAIN
THE UT PRES WAS MOST UPSET. SINCE THEY
HAD A MAJORITY HE KNEW IT WAS POSSIBLE.
IN LATER MEETINGS THE UT PRES ASKED HOW
THIS MIGHT GET RESOLVED WITH THE THREE
MEMBERS. UH TO SWC MIGHT HELP THE GROUP.
GUESS WHAT ???
