Wichita State Hoop-McDuffie back for 18-19 / Austin Reaves to Oklahoma

WSU-Only McDuffie back who played major minutes.
Could be tough for WSU make 8th straight NCAA Tourney.
Odd move for Reaves who was set up to be the focus of the offense (w/McDuffie).

Reeves is the one who threw the pass that Galen stole at the end of the seminfinal game. Reeves is the one Rob outhustled for that long inbounds pass.

After the game, Marshall threw Reeves under the bus. Not surprising that he’s leaving.

Good call. I didnt think of that.

This was the real problem with Wichita State losing in the 1st round this year. Conference brought them in expecting at least a Sweet 16 run to get some of those sweet NCAA units, and they crapped the bed.

Now, you’re stuck with a basketball school that probably won’t make the tourney next year. Hopefully, Marshall turns it around quickly, but you have to ask whether they will be able to compete in a much stronger conference going forward.

Marshall’s track record with WSU is pretty solid. The AAC is pretty good but WSU won the NIT and made a deep run in the NCAA Tourney before joining. Regardless of conference affiliation, those are pretty good accomplishments. We need him to rebound from the attrition and help the AAC brand.

Agree that Marshall is a good coach and can probably turn it around. May just be a temporary setback before continuing on a successful track again. He had one season at Winthrop where he struggled halfway through his tenure and was immediately back in the tourney the year after.

He does have a solid class coming in with 6 3* recruits according to 247 and he already has a 4* committed for '19.

From Arkansas. His parents played at Ark State.

“has sent release letters to several college basketball programs, including Arkansas.”

Nice pickup for the Shockers.

The 6-foot-3 point guard from Missouri State-West Plains averaged 17.2 points per game with a 49.9 field goal and 43.3 three-point percentage. He also averaged 4.7 rebounds per game.

Torres has an unselfish style of play averaging 8.1 assists per game. He set his school’s single-game (16), season (268) and career (427) assist records.

WSU has a good coach and great fan support and it is good for the AAC for the Shockers to be competitive…just like we need Memphis to get back in the race before it loses its big fan base…

WSU allowed 71.6 points per game in the 2017-18 season, which was up more than nine points from the previous season. The advanced metrics also indicated a steep decline in WSU’s defense, as it fell from No. 13 in Ken Pomeroy’s adjusted efficiency measure to No. 111 in 2017-18, WSU’s worst finish since the 2008-09 team ranked 120th during a 17-17 season.

Marshall said on the Drive that WSU’s defense struggled to adjust to the bigger, more athletic and more skilled guards in the American Athletic Conference.

“The athleticism and size and talent in the American Athletic Conference, player for player, is a notch, if not a notch and a half, above what we were seeing,” Marshall said. "Most of the guys on the roster were recruited as Missouri Valley guys, and we were undermanned in a couple of instances against certain teams.

“We needed to upgrade our talent level, and we had the opportunity to bring in some long, athletic young men that we think have great potential and talent. Several of them not only do we think, but at least a couple are going to have to play right away and be successful for our program to stay at the same level.”
