Houston senior distance runner Brian Barraza has been named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District Team for District 7, the organization announced Tuesday.

Barraza was one of 10-student athletes to be named to the District 7 team and was one of just six men’s athletes from the American Athletic Conference to earn the honor. To be eligible for the Academic All-District teams, student-athletes must have completed one full year academically and hold a cumulative grade point average of 3.30 or higher.

Barraza most recently became just the third Cougar in program history to qualify for the NCAA Outdoor Championships in the 3,000-meter Steeplechase and is the first Houston competitor since John Macy and Jerry Smartt each went in 1959. The American Champion in the steeplechase, broke his own school record in the event at the NCAA Regionals, when he ran 8:41.49.

Entering the NCAA Championships, Barraza owns six Houston distance records.

In the classroom, the 2017 All-American holds a 4.00 cumulative grade point average as a kinesiology major. The honor marks the second-consecutive season that Barraza has been named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District team, and he would go on to be named CoSIDA Academic All-American in 2017 as well.
