Big 12 fumble
Editorial from the Houston Chronicle

The football league’s decision to not expand made itself look stagnant and tone-deaf.

UH has vowed to continue its push for national athletic respectability, and Fertitta is probably right when he predicts that the Cougars, eventually, will be a member of the Big Ten or the Pac-12, conferences with more clout - and money - than the bumbling Big 12. It’s hard to see how a major university in the nation’s fourth-largest city, a university with an increasingly successful athletic enterprise, a proven talent base and a huge TV market, will be overlooked forever by collegiate sports powers. “It’s just a matter of time, we all know that,” Fertitta said.

Mailbag: How the Big 12 hurt itself in expansion

By the end of all of this, I felt the league might as well expand. I did not foresee the potential harm to the Big 12’s brand that others did, because the main schools they were considering had already demonstrated an ability to be good at football. Maybe it wouldn’t improve the league’s stability, respect or playoff potential, as you suggest, but nor would it hurt them. And of course, they’d make more money.

The Houston billionaire began: “It was painful.” Soon he said, “The whole thing doesn’t even make any sense, okay?” Soon after that he said, “People are just sick of it all.” Soon after that he said, “They really put mud on their face.”

Joel Klatt Says Big 12 Should Be Ashamed Of Themselves

Fox college football analyst Joel Klatt caught up with Lance and Matt and discussed the Big 12 deciding not to expand, his thoughts on the upcoming matchup between Oklahoma and Texas Tech, if the Aggies have a chance to beat Alabama on Saturday, and much more.

I follow Expansion Crush on Twitter; he’s one of a large group of folks that tracks expansion. A large portion of them are B1G guys (he’s an Indiana guy); thought it was interesting that he posted this out of the blue last night, especially because he hasn’t really been one to talk Houston up before. I mean, he’s not a bigwig or anything that will help influence decisions, but we are being noticed:

This would be my dream come true.

My view on this:

If it is positive I believe it.

If it is negative then it can’t be true.

I have trips to see games at Ohio State and Michigan on my bucket list, so I’m game for getting into the B1G.

Patrick, your find on this all important topic make this my favorite thread to read through…I know HY has met with BIG, and to me we should extend ourselves in every way, athletically, academically and research wise, to try and get a bid when their TV deal is up…Any dates on when that is? Likely they begin expansion moves a year or so before that date…

They just re-upped this year for 6 years. They wanted to have their contract expire right before the GOR ended for the Big 12 contract and a year before the Pac 12 contract ends in order to have greater flexibility as digital mediums come online and also to survey the changing landscape. Delaney probably won’t be the commissioner for that contract so it’ll be interesting to see who his replacement is, but the B1G is all about making strategic moves; if they feel something will benefit them they will pounce.

UH’s positives not enough to impress Big 12

Not only because the Big 12 is comically mismanaged, especially as represented by the blathering of Oklahoma president David Boren, but because Big 12 schools are among the haves and UH is one of the have-nots.

Big 12 commissioner Bowlsby says expansion candidates ‘disappointed’

“There were a number of presidents and chancellors who wanted to hear the discussion in the room,” Bowlsby said. “I thought that there was some possibility that we would add [members], but I’m not shocked that it came out the way that it did, either.”

BYU officials once deemed independence ‘not sustainable’ — so what’s next after Big 12’s rejection?

It’s Time To Scrutinize The Big 12
http://www.courant.com/sports/college/hc-jacobs-column-power-five-1024-20161023-column.html

More than that, it’s time for a system that allowed the Big 12 to run its tawdry beauty pageant without repercussion beyond a level of public ridicule to come under scrutiny. It is a system, monopolistic to be sure and, historically, shown to be corrupt in its bowl machinations, richly deserving of such scrutiny.

Interesting article but where was the outrage when the G5 agreed to the CFP?
I have mentioned it countless times. That agreement was the worst outcome possible for the G5. They thought that getting a team to a NY6 bowl was a good enough deal for them. They caved in and gave full control for the CARTEL to operate as a CARTEL. To not envision the near future and what will come of it is strictly on the G5 leaders. They should have never signed that agreement. How can we legally contest in court a contract that we have officially signed?
What could make a G5 Team undefeated? Depth.
Yes, we are getting better recruits but we are still the fifth to 20th choice for the vast majority of the top recruits.

According to Sports Business Daily, in exchange for not expanding, they’ll receive from ESPN…

(drum roll)…

$125k per team per year.

Big 12 teams are raking in an extra $125,000 to lose the ESPN pro rata. These oafs aren’t even good negotiators. https://t.co/7S803wOlcJ

@mattsarz not sure where paywall ends but says ESPN paying $10M over 8yrs for more ad inventory and no pro rata. Fox pro rata still in place

This conference is dead man walking…cheer up Coogs. It would just end up another Big East BCS scenario. Look ahead and work toward a better future not dealing with those dysfunctional idiots.

Yep, it’s obvious that OU/UT are not on the same page at this time if that’s all that was paid out.
