I think, in Freeman’s case, there’s bias against him because he’s coming from a smaller school that’s never produced a D1 player and many of the big schools aren’t sniffing around because of that. Kid seems to be motivated and has some good leadership qualities as well as a mean streak. Hopefully it works out.
The problem with the recruiting services is they only have so many people that can watch film or scout. Basically, a lot of their job is word of mouth or checking these guys out at their camps. However, if a kid is a late bloomer or can’t make a camp, they tend to not get noticed.
Think about Case. Similar situation, small school, and he was overlooked. Was given a 2 star because Houston was the only one that offered. I doubt any of the recruiting services seriously watched his film.
CBY used to do the same. He’d get guys like that and turn them over to Tom Wilson and Billy Willingham and by the time they were RS sophs or juniors, they were solid OL’s paving the way for our offense.
I’ll take a Texas 4A 1st team all state player any day. The CMA’s HS connections are paying off. This kid was obviously overlooked and undervalued by the “experts.”
