Christian Trahan recorded 25 receptions, 381 yards (15.2 yards per catch) and four touchdowns in 2016 and was picked as a District 3-5A first team offensive selection.

This “early” recruiting class is better than good. It is excellent. Kudos to Major and his staff, on assembling what looks like a solid recruiting class.

“I think it was just the family environment,” Trahan said. “When I went to camp over there, I just knew that this was the place I wanted to be.”

Judging by the avalanche of commits we got after rapping up the camps Trahan’s experience must have been the norm. That’s a great thing. It means if we can get the recruits we want to come to our camps we will close the deal.
The pace at which they are committing after the camps is also a good precedent. For arguments’ sake lets say we win 10 or more games this season plus a bowl game. That cements the staffs reputation as winners. Then next year we get even more attendees at camp that are highly sought after. They love the experience. Staff and current players can point to how quickly the class filled up the year before. People want to be a part of something other people want to be a part of. It makes the spot seem more valuable. It lends cache. it could help us get a few more of those universally recognized talents in the 4 and even 5 star range.

I love how many recruits are saying this place feels like family or like home. That environment can speak volumes to kids for a variety of reasons (coming from a bad or deficient family situation, moving far away from home, coming from a good family situation and knows what a good family feels like). Herman sold a lot of kids on that environment but it seems like Applewhite is maybe even a better salesman on that front.

Our old dad was full of BS. Our new dad seems like a straight-shooter.

The current coach always seems like a straight-shooter until they become the former coach…

I hope that recruiting tight ends means we’ll be utilizing the position more in the future because we sure aren’t using them now. I mean what’s the use of having talented tight ends on the team if they’re rarely used?

Ric,
I agree. Seems to me we could really use some plays designed for a TE. Maybe a few less 3rd down dive plays and a few more intermediate tosses to a big receiver.

I thought Brooker was athletic enough and sure handed to get some looks in the red zone, but you never saw it. Think about all the plays McCloskey made. Hope we can bring it back to that level.

I think my favorite U of H tight end of all time has to be Mark Hafner. I always remember him coming up with big plays, taking on multiple tacklers at once, always pushing for that extra couple of yards, and always coming up on big third-down plays. If we could get a tight end like him and utilize him in the same way, I think a lot of our critical down situations would be eliminated. Either through him or it would open up a lot of other players/options.

I liked Brooker, but I guess he missed a few blocking assignments and was replaced by Leslie from what I’ve heard. From what I saw of Leslie, I’m not sure why that change was made for that reason.

Look for Eichenberger to make a push for the job next season.
