Earl Thomas and Riley Odoms were not slackers . . . . .

Earl & Riley were both terrific college players and Riley was a multi-year pro-bowl NFL player, but (like former UH/Dallas Cowboys RB Robert Newhouse) they were probably a little before shawnterry’s UH fandom period.

On the other hand, maybe he has tasted some of Earl’s “Thomas BBQ” at one of his local restaurants.

Odoms and Thomas on the same team was simply awesome
Odoms was one of the greatest athletes to ever be a Cougar. He was all-state in football, basketball and baseball and even track at West Oso. We have not had anyone remotely close to him over the years, although Carl Hilton was pretty dang good

Oh I totally agree they were awesome and wasn’t trying to take away from them. I guess I was giving Hafner a lot of props because he wasn’t on a dominant team like Thomas and Odom’s were. The years they played at U of H was more or less the best in the history of the program.

Please, while UH may have had more talent back in the '60s than the current bunch, please remember that UH ran the veer
that’s right they were a run first team. I can’t imagine what a Riley Odoms would do these days in pass happy offenses

I have been told that is not the same Earl Thomas. But what I remember about those two was the end around TD pass that Earl Thomas threw in the dome. I also remember that we ran a double TE offense some of the time but mostly Earl started and kept Riley part time until his senior season.

Well you can make an argument several different ways. When you have a veer offense that runs the ball very effectively can’t you also say that it throws off the defense and open up the pass to where you can make easier passes to the TE? Also even though the offenses today are more pass happy, how many pass happy offenses utilize the tight end? I get what you’re saying, but I also sometimes think some players are a better fit in some systems. Otherwise they may never reach their potential or be noticed at all. And just so we are clear, Hafner wasn’t in a pass happy system despite what everybody wants to think about the Briles offense.

First of all Odoms and Thomas were both pros for many years, so there was no doubt that they both had plenty of ability. The veer was always a run first offense, but coach Yeoman was known to throw in an effective passing game. But come on, those never threw the football around like Briles or Sumlin teams did.
Odoms is one of the greatest athletes to ever play here
also remember that Odoms played on the same team with All-America Elmo Wright
man those were the days

Back when Floyd Little was up for NFL Hall of Fame, I watched a bunch of video.

Riley Odoms was a solid blocker. Really stood out on video.

Odoms came late in Floyd’s career & he was beat up. (small for an electric style every down NFL RB in those smash mouth days)

Riley sprung him a bunch in the highlights.Joe Dawkins the FB was also vicious & a good runner.

They played 3 or 4 seasons together. Odoms was 1st team All Pro a couple of those seasons.

Don’t get me wrong, I agree with you 100 percent. The comments I was making was more in reference to this recruit and his potential in regards to this offense and how we could utilize the TE better. Without a doubt those two guys were absolutely phenomenal and their career displays that.

In regards to this type of offense, the only utilization and good utilization of a tight end that I can remember in the past 15 years was Hafner. Ironically Hafner was in AB’s offense, it will be interesting to see how KB will use the tight ends.

I agree, but I also remember we had 3 or 4 99 yd touchdown pass plays. One I remember, in the dome, was a pass play from the one where the football hit the receiver in the back of the helmet. If he had turned around, we would have had an additional 99 yard’er . . . . .

I still remember him trucking the OSU linebacker and then taking it to the house.
