C/O ‘20 Jamal Shead commits to Coogs (Update: Signed)

Rivals has Shead as the most underrated point guard in 2020

Regarding dominate big men. In the NBA we see New Orleans and Milwaukee with dominate big men. When they score the point total is two. The Golden State and Toronto teams use fours to give them more speed and quick transitions that lead to threes. The three point shot has changed the game. We
will do just fine with rapid up court movement by point guards like Galen with a mix of treys and inside transition twos coming from an offense so quick that the defenses cannot set up… The fours, threes, twos and ones that CKS is getting are just fine. In fact the recruiting is cutting edge in the NCAA.

I agree that 3s are better than 2s, but a good inside game helps open up the three point line for the shooters. Defenders can’t camp out on the perimeter if there’s a legit scoring threat down low. That’s why we started nearly every second half this past year by getting the ball into Brady in the post. He would score 6 straight, defenders would start collapsing on him and suddenly Corey and Armoni had open looks from 3. Transition 2s are nice, but coupling that with a big who can score in the paint is only going to make this team better (assuming that big isn’t a paint clogger who prevents guards from cutting to the bucket).

Tramon looks like a helluva rebounder.

Shead plays basketball for Drive Nation on the Nike EYBL grassroots circuit. Currently, per 24/7 Sports, Shead is averaging 12.9 points and 6.8 assists per contest for Drive Nation in the Nike EYBL.

Jamal excels at defense; and, his offense continues to improve.

Shead told me, “I’ve been told I’m a Galen 2.0 that shoots better.”

Galen Robinson with a jump shot? I’ll take that.

Galen Robinson with a jump shot will be lethal. Can’t wait to see this!

It really has not set in how good these guys are and what they will do for the program. It also feels good to get two Texas kids to stay home.

He seems to have great court awareness. Knows where everyone is.

His passing reminds me of Magic Johnson on a smaller frame…the delay crossover included…very confident ball handling and changes rhythm as good as any HS player I’ve seen. Definitely a confident fellow.

And if you wanna really parse it down, watch him dribble with his left hand…then his right. On the fast breaks I saw him go the length of the court using either hand at full speed. Not.The.Average.Skillset.

Before CKS retires, he will have led us to another Final Four, perhaps a NC.

I hope…for us and him. Would be a great redemption story for a program and a man who both probably deserve it for a number of reasons.

I for one will never forget what the man has done for the program.

Are any of these guys enrolling early like Mills did?

I don’t believe so. All will be coming in after their senior year.

If Grimes leaves early as expected, UH will be at the limit (13) on scholarship. But if Jarreau test the waters like Ormani did, CKS might bring someone in during the Spring time. No one else is expected to leave early unless Hinton just blows up.
