2022 Case Keenum Thread - Houston Texans back home where he belongs

The Titans are not an expansion team. They are one of the original AFL teams. Used to be known as the Houston Oilers.

Keenum, like Sam Bradford and Teddy Bridgewater, is due to become a free agent in March. The Vikings should approach Keenum now with an offer that would give him more money for 2017, and that would keep him around for 2018.

Sure, he could wait to become a free agent, sign with a quarterback-needy team in March, and then be supplanted by a first-round rookie, like Glennon was this year in Chicago and like Keenum was last year with the Rams. Or he could get solid backup money to play for the Vikings for as long as they need him this season and be one of the options for 2018, which possibly could include Keenum becoming the starter.

The only certainty at quarterback for the Vikings is Case Keenum

“He showed he’s had some good stuff on tape,” head coach Mike Zimmer said. “I think the team believes when he comes in there he’s going to go in there and play well and that’s the most important thing.”

They really need to just say Case is the starter for the rest of the season.

Not only that, they should be renegotiating an extension that will pay him more this year, lock him up for next year, and maybe the year after. He should be making around $4M/yr as one of the best backup/starters in the league.

He’s only making $1.9M this year. They really should lock him up while they have a chance.

sportrac.com tallies player salaries and Case at $2m ranks tied at 43rd for QBs.

Filtering out the rookies, he’s tied at 34th.

More notes:
21 QBs make north of $15m a season
15 make more than $20m

Derek Carr is at $25m per, and Matt Stafford is the highest at $27m.

Going back to the year 2011 salaries, $2m per would still rank 34th among vet QBs.
In 2011, only 10 players made more than $10m, five made more than $15m, and Manning was the highest at $18m.

So in six years the salaries have been boosted at an amazing 50% clip at the top tier, $18 to $27 million.

Case put together a solid game today. He’s definitely showing that he can get it done.

Keenum is KILLING IT. No. 7 is No. 7 in NFL in Total QBR. Outstanding. He’ll get better as he plays more, too. Lots of weapons in that offense. Happy for him!

Didn’t this last game against GB make Keenum the all-time Houston alumni leader in Ws and TDs and a bunch of other stats?

The Vikings knew the 6-1, 215-pounder lacked prototypical size. They knew his arm strength wasn’t ideal.

But Keenum had two physical traits that would work in Pat Shurmur’s offense: accuracy and mobility.

The Vikings also had done pre-draft work on Keenum in 2012, when the NCAA record-shattering passer went undrafted out of the University of Houston. The team concurred with the consensus on Keenum being a strong leader with good character and personality.

“Case has seized this opportunity and is arguably one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL so far. Maybe the Vikings are thinking Case is better than they thought.”

  • Nice quote from Matt Hasselbeck

“I’ve been around Case. I really enjoy him. He’s one of my favorite guys we had in the workout group we had for a while when he was in L.A. He’s done a really good job for them and he exudes that confidence I was talking about. When he gets in there, they’re really not missing a beat as far as tempo and what they’re trying to do.”
