CB Colin Samuel transfers to Houston - UCLA Grad Transfer

Samuel saw action last year in five games as a reserve for the Bruins in their secondary and also on special teams. Samuel suffered a torn ACL in 2018 while covering a kickoff against Utah.

2017 was Samuel’s best year as a Bruin as he saw action in all 13 games and made three starts in the Bruin defensive backfield. He had 11 tackles and tied for second on the team with four pass defenses.

How’s his ACL? I guess we would have worked him out and given him a physical before offering, right?

Props to him for continuing his education!

ACLs are always better after the surgery.
Tearing the other side is more likely than a re-injury.

We may not be done as far as adding another CB. One of the top jucos is scheduled of visiting UH dis weekend.

Kelvin Clemons, a highly rated CB from Florida who played at Minnesota last year is on campus. I think he would be a sophomore this year and have to sit out the season, but I’m not sure.

He’s going to be a junior since he played two years at Hutchinson and graduated from HS in 2016 from Florida. He should be eligible given that Minnesota gives him a release from his letter of intent. And yes, he would have two years to play at UH.

Who dat juco CB coming dis weekend?

Tanks.

Ouuuuuu

This new staff has a job that the Herman staff did not have. Herman and his assistants had a ready-to-go defense courtesy of Coach Levine and his staff. The talent was there and they just needed to be coached up. This new staff is having to build a defense on the fly because of recruiting deficiencies under Applewhite and the two lost years (first and last) under Herman.

There really is no excuse for the low numbers that were left at defensive back (specifically at cornerback) and in the defensive line. Kudos to the current staff for their efforts and player additions at those positions.

Saw UCLA folks talking about Samuel. Was a 4* coming out of high school, has height and decent speed. UCLA had a deep secondary under Mora and Samuel just couldn’t beat out some other highly rated guys. They like him, just feel that he needs a change of scenery.

They did have 2 DBs picked up as undrafted free agents after the draft so they did have talent there. Hopefully, he can come in and compete.

Didn’t CDH go on a rant against adding grad transfers because they erode depth long term or is this his plan just for the first few years till he builds depth?

I think Colin Samuel is more of a play now type of guy because we must REALLY be hurting at CB. As opposed to getting a Juco CB or a Freshman who may or may not pan out in scheme or experience.

I think the real problem with what Applewhte did was use schokarships for the NEXT year on grad transfers. That is completely insane to me. If there are scholarships available for 2019, use them. Using any available scholarships is not gping backward.

I can see very early that Holgerson is a very intelligent person. This bodes very well for UH football moving forward. I had tge same feeling when Herman started so everyone get ready to start rushing fields again.
