Only twice since 1984 — in 1990 and '91 — have nontraditional powers won the national title. In 1990, Colorado and Georgia Tech shared the title. The following year, Washington and Miami did the same.

Article contains a large dose of 20-20 hindsight.

Miami won national titles in 1983, 1987, 1989, 1991, 2001. Before that, they were not “Blue Blood.” They had only played in 8 bowl games.

Florida St won national titles in 1993, 1999, 2013. Before Bowden was hired, they were not “blue blood.” They had gone to 7 bowl games in 23 years.

Florda’s first national title was 1996. Before Spurrier was hired, they were not “blue blood.” They had never won the SEC title before 1991.

Thanks for mentioning that. Was the first thing I thought of when reading that article.
