Former North Shore player, Alyssa Okoene, transfers to UH basketball from UNC

Huge pickup for Coach Hughey and the Lady Coogs. Okoene is tall (6’3") and athletic, was an ESPN 3* out of high school, and is a local kid that’s coming home. She’ll sit one and have 3 to play.

There will be a ton of talent on this team next year and the year after; up to coach to put it together.

What do you love most about the game of basketball?

I love the HUSTLE. I love the hard work and dedication that comes with being successful at this game. I take so much pride in my defense and rebounding, helping my team be as successful as possible. Basketball has opened so many doors for me and has helped me realize that hard work truly does pay off.

Okoene, a 6-2 forward, played in all 31 games for UNC in 2016-17 while making 10 starts for the Tar Heels. She averaged 2.2 points and 3.4 rebounds per contest while blocking 19 shots in nearly 500 minutes.

“Alyssa is a long and athletic post with off-the-charts potential,” Hughey said. “She is superb in transition, running the floor like a guard, with soft hands to catch and finish on the move. She has an emerging offensive game in the paint and will benefit tons from working with Coach Vicky Picott. Alyssa is also a great defender with the ability to guard in and out of the paint and guard almost every position on the court.”

Coach has been good at recruiting guards out of high school but not so much with the bigs…I never put too much hopes on transfers, especially in women’s basketball, but she seems like a good pickup. like Pray said, the talent is in place but it is time to actually make some noise on the court…in a good way
