Gene Shannon Passed away

Shannon was the Coogs first great RB and played from 1949-51. Here are some facts:

  • 1st 1,000 yard rushing season in UH history
  • 10 100 yard rushing games
  • Scored 4 TDs in one game and 3 TDs in 2 others
  • 4th all-time in UH history for All-Purpose yards in 1 game (330)
  • Tied for 13th in UH history for All-purpose yards in a season (1,704)
  • 12th in UH history for All-Purpose yards in a career (3,755)
  • Tied for 12th in UH history for Career TDs (29)
  • Holds UH bowl records for most rushing attempts in one game, most TDs in one game, and most points scored in one game. Also 2nd for most rushing yards in one game (Salad Bowl 1952)
  • AP Honorable Mention All-American in 1951
  • 1st Team All-Conference 1950 and 1951
  • MVP of the 1952 Salad Bowl
  • 3rd Round Draft pick of the 49ers in 1952
  • Member of 1st UH Hall of Honor class along with Guy V Lewis and Rex Baxter
  • Member of Tyler Junior College Circle of Honor
  • Head Coach of the New London Wildcats from 1954-1963

So sorry to hear this…Gene came to UH after an outstanding career at Brazosport High and went on to be an outstanding high school coach…
