Goodbye to the UC Satellite

That’s where I first laid eyes on my wife back in the summer of 83; seems like yesterday.

I started school at UH in 1998. They had a small game room in the satellite, to the left and to the left of the entrance that included a pool table. They sold bottled beer there.

One thing I will miss about the Satellite: If you was a single guy, when I was in school, all the ladies hung out there because the Stories was on starting at 11am. You had to pretend to like the Stories to find someone…lol! My Wife (my friend back then) and her sister would hang there. Well, you will be missed, Satellite!:stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

Building underground venues with open access to rain water runoff is not a good idea in Houston or other areas prone to monsoon like rains.

I rember there was a message board with a magic marker in the Satellite. As a joke I left a buddy’s phone number and and an invitation to have threesome’s with sado-couples.

He ended up changing his number.

I never got to say goodbye because of the shutdown. Hopefully whatever happens to it it’s good and makes the future students there happy.

Same here; I had planned to go and take some photos but never got around to it. If anybody on campus could take a photo, I’d be curious what things look like now.

I remember seeing that phenomenon my freshman year in 2000. That didn’t really come back after Allison. Guess really by then you were starting to have streaming and soap operas were kind of dead by then.

Also I went back over the original post and Daily Cougar article. They make mention of a fifth parking garage. I remember all the hand wringing over putting in the first!

Satellite Replacement

Scheduled to open in spring 2024, The Hub will service the central district of campus and replaces the old Student Center Satellite building that had major (flooding) problems… (and) closed permanently in 2020. The Hub is being built above ground at the same location.

Similarly, in the mid 90s on the big main TV they had Jerry Springer on when he was just getting super popular. It was almost like watching in a stadium with all the people that would be in there at that time.

Now when I was finishing my degree in the beginning of the last decade, I was sitting at a table eating and there were people sitting at a table next to me talking about what a douchebag they thought this one guy was. A guy I had classes with so I knew who it was but hadn’t gotten to know him yet. It was funny, and he really wasn’t a douchebag. He was just passionate about his major and career choice.

As far as the new Hub. I wonder just how much hyperbole that is in saying it will revolutionize campus dining.

I spent a lot of time there when I should have been in classes. So sad.

Played a lot of air hockey there from ‘72-‘74. Also, I got hired while there to work on the crew for a porn movie that was being filmed in and around Harris County.

Weird, I am feeling nostalgic for the Satellite, but when I was in school, I probably went their once.

The UC, on the other hand, I spent way too much time there in the game room

My wife (then GF) used to get on my case about it, because I used to borrow her car to go to school and told her I had class, but I didn’t. I just stayed and hung out in the game room with my buddies.

I too spent too much time at the satellite, instead of class…lol

It will be a big food court when done. Will it be open on game days when football is being played?

I really liked the Satellite when I had classes on that part of campus but loved the UC.
The SC maker over just seems very sterile to me on the times I’ve since visited.
The movie theater was needed addition , but wish they would have left the open air
feel…hanging staircases , fountains, The statue, courtyard, etc. Times change.

Spent some time there myself but looking really forward to what is coming and the look it will provide that side of the campus.

Had a bunch of food there and good moments with some friends and people i won’t see again. I’ll miss that place.

I had a buddy that I met up with quite a bit in the satellite to play air hockey. One day, when I walked in, he was playing air hockey with one of his buddies from high school. Well, this guy turned out to be a radio TV major at UH, and had been hired to work on a movie that was being filmed locally. He asked the two of us if we would like to make some extra money working on the crew of this movie. Turns out, it was a porn flick. Most of the GOOD scenes had been filmed elsewhere, and they were mainly doing exterior shots around town. I was mainly just working as a grunt, moving furniture, fake walls, signs, etc. around. I also ran errands and took people back and forth to the airport. I got to appear in one scene, but alas, it was a scene set in a restaurant, and I was just sitting at a table looking at the menu. The only scene that I got to see with any nasty bits was a girl getting thrown out a second story window to her death. In reality it was only about 10’ on to a heavily padded surface. The best part was her bow following our applause.
