PITCHING BREAKDOWN
[L] Fred Villarreal | 1.0 IP, 2 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 0 K
Brayson Hurdsman | 3.0 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 1 BB, 2 K
Hunter Edwards | 1.1 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 3 BB, 0 K
Nolan Bond | 2.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K

Houston starter Fred Villarreal went just 1.0 inning, allowing two earned runs on two hits with a walk and hit batter. He would suffer the loss, falling to 0-1 on the year in his first start of 2018.

Brayson Hurdsman would take over and last 3.0 innings, surrendering three runs on five hits and one walk with two strikeouts.

Hunter Edwards relived Hurdsman in the fifth and lasted 1.1 innings, allowing two runs on three hits with three walks.

Nolan Bond took over in the sixth and worked the Cougars out of a jam, inducing an inning-ending double play. He finished with 2.2 innings, allowing just one hit, no runs with one walk and a strikeout.

A midweek split against this SHSU team is not bad.

Frustrating to have so many LOB, but at least the hitters have mostly seen the ball well in recent games. We at least now have 5 regulars in the lineup now with a BA above .300 or near it (Davis and Lockhart are right under). If I’ll question anything, it was the decision early to use Bielamowicz totally as a pitcher early on after he had such a promising year at the plate.

Definitely, Coogs actually moved up 12 spots in the RPI after the split; they moved up 7 last night even with the loss.

Bielo has a knack of getting on base and showed that last year. I guess they really thought Brown and Minter would take off this year and felt that they didn’t need Bielo. He’d almost work as a 2 hole hitter ahead of Triolo in the 3 spot, but Triolo has been on such a tear and you don’t want to mess with that.

Honestly, other than the record away from home, this team hasn’t been that bad. What’s killing them right now is how their opponents have fared:

  • Holy Cross has been solid the last few years, but currently sits at 16-20
  • McNeese has been a very good team the last few years, but also sits at 16-20
  • Fullerton was in the CWS last year, but is 17-18
  • San Diego was supposed to be better, but is 18-19
  • Lamar has been good lately, but is 11-26
  • Rice isn’t good anymore and is 16-21-1
  • The game at College Station being cancelled against a 28-9 A&M squad

Even with all that, the Coogs schedule offers a chance to boost their RPI considerably the rest of the way. Now, they just need to keep winning at home and find a way to win on the road.

Very true on the schedule: Fullerton and Irvine two years in a row. I’m sure CTW is cursing his bad luck that he planned 2 series in CA against what are usually elite/RPI boosting teams and caught both teams in historically bad years.

Not that they’re that good this year, but I wish we’d at least have taken the game vs Miss State in the Shriner’s Classic.

Definitely, there’s been a number of games that we’ve just barely lost where it came down to just needing a clutch hit or two: the opener vs Holy Cross, the opener at CSF, the Miss St game, the HBU loss, the McNeese loss, the Rice loss, the 1st Cincy loss, even that 17-16 Tulane loss where we actually could have scored more but left quite a few on early in that game.

Even if you go 4-4 in those games, we’re 26-11, probably at least in the 70’s RPI-wise and about to get a huge boost with the upcoming schedule.
