Houston's Receivers Talented Just not Deep

Kyle Allen’s best tools in 2017 might be a talented set of receivers. And by set, we mean two, other than those guys there just aren’t a lot of known commodities. Linell Bonner and Steven Dunbar are known said proven commodities for Allen and Offensive Coordinator Brian Johnson, but beyond that and with D’Eriq King possibly moving to quarterback for 2017 and key pieces graduating, depth is an issue. So who will Allen be throwing to next season? Let’s take a stab at it.

What’s the scoop on Courtney Lark?

He was hurt towards the end of the spring, but should be in the mix come fall.

He had one total catch in the first scrimmage. There is no mention of his injury in either scrimmage nor was he mentioned as an injured player in the red/white game news. With only 4 game appearances and 3 catches last year, seems like a waste of burning a redshirt. Add to that he was one of our highest profile prospects of 2016 and doesn’t even get mentioned in a detailed piece on our receivers makes me feel like his speed or his hands aren’t as good as his rating implied.

Losing Stevenson again stings so bad. Sounds like he was the best of the FR WRs last year and the only one ready to contribute immediately. We really need Lark and Corbin to step it up. Also want to see what Terry Mark can do. With the lack of depth, he may get his shot.

Yea, I was wondering about him too. He had offers from all over the country and was a pretty big get for the Coogs.

Lark’s injury wasn’t a serious injury and I believe he was still participating in some practice drills, however, he was injured shortly after the first scrimmage and was held out from contact after that. Lot of guys were held out due to nagging injuries this spring with many going unreported.

Lark needs coaching as he’s a bit raw. Has great straight line speed, but that’s about it. His development, or lack thereof, may have been a big reason why Wyatt was let go after the spring (along with Corbin’s).

As far as the write-up, it’s a decent piece, but doesn’t mention a lot: the grad transfer coming from ASU, any of the tight ends (even though it mentions McCloskey leaving), and Terry Mark who had some moments in the spring. I agree with the premise that we aren’t deep which is why the staff was looking for grad transfers at the position and are offering a ton of receivers.
