The most severe penalty was a failed drug test, three people with knowledge of the situation told the Chronicle on the condition of anonymity because they are not authorized to speak publicly on the situation. Romero also broke curfew during a weekend series at Central Florida in late March.

One especially embarrassing incident occurred early in the season when Romero was captured in a photograph holding a bong while in full uniform. A source said the photo, obtained by the Chronicle, was taken sometime during the Cougars’ March 24-26 series at UC Irvine. Romero was shagging balls before one of the games and went behind the outfield wall to retrieve a ball. Once there, Romero bumped into “a few kids,” who asked the UH pitcher to pose for a photo, the source said.

What amazes me more than failing the drug test is his totally dumb move to allow someone to take his picture in uniform holding a bong. I don’t care if he inhaled or not that was a dumb and classless move. If this had been a UT or Aggie player folks on all the Cougar boards would be going wild…
I don’t know all the facts but from what I have read I have to question the coaches allowing him back on the team. I don’t give a flip about his pro career…just embarrassed at the way he elected to rep the University of Houston…

Omg he held a bong! Good thing everyone here made perfect decisions between the ages of 18 and 22.

Butch, I agree with you on the point that I would question allowing him back on the team. This isn’t a 1st time offense as far as rule-breaking and there have been a number of other incidents where he’s actively pushed the limits. I said when he was suspended that I thought that they should just part ways with him and wish him luck.

However, if he met the conditions of reinstatement, and the team has no problems with him back, he should be allowed to return. I just hope the other players/captains on the team were given a choice on the matter.

I agree with you Pray…it is a decision coach Whitting and our AD will have to live with. I covered Seth when he played at West Columbia and can tell you simply put, he has a history. of being disruptive to his team.
I can live with his reinstatement, but hope it does not bite us in our collective butts as a program, especially when it comes to recruiting future players.
Obviously I don’t know all the facts here so I will go with the final decision and once again hope Seth uses this as an opportunity to mature.
My biggest point is that I was more upset with his decision to go behind the Cougar fence and get coaxed into taking a picture by apparent strangers. And in that picture he is wearing a UH uniform and holding a bong. I really didn’t think anyone was that stupid.
Somehow, someway I hope something good comes out of this.

I agree with both of you Pray10 and bigmccoog.

I hope the team had a say in the decision and was not just the coaches.
I hope he has matured or at least can keep on the straight and narrow until the end of the season.
Also, hope this decision has no long-term detrimental effect.
