JD Periscope chat from Monday w/ Sam Khan

  • Talking from a new location at the Chronicle building with palm trees behind him (not Robertson Stadium palm trees)
  • Sam Khan is the guest
  • Highest ranked opponent that Houston has hosted since #2 Texas in 1983
  • 7th time that Houston has hosted a Top 5 team: 1-4-1 in those games
  • Lamar Jackson is on pace to break Colt Brennan’s Total TD record in a season
  • Last primetime showcase for Lamar Jackson before the Heisman ballots have to be in
  • JD is a Heisman voter
  • Lamar Jackson didn’t have a lot of time last year to prepare due to coming in the summer before the season
  • CTH said that there isn’t a whole lot to take from last year’s Louisville game - Jackson is a different player this year and more prepared and UH defense is different with different players
  • Sam is interested to see how Ed Oliver fares in this game
  • Defensively, Louisville is very good…especially scary against the Coog OLine
  • Best chance for Coogs to win is for Greg Ward to be “Greg Ward.” Needs to be at his best
  • Ward tweaked the same shoulder he hurt in the opener and has been bothered by an ankle injury for awhile now
  • Chance Allen said that “this is our Super Bowl”
  • CTH joked that he needed to send a Thank you to Mack Rhodes for scheduling OU and Louisville in the same season
  • If Houston beats Louisville, should be back in the Top 25. May sneak back in this Tuesday before the game because of the OU win
  • Louisville win would put Houston back in the national purview
  • Sam remarks that if they only had 1 loss, might be in the playoff discussion. Also remarks about how difficult it is to pull off a playoff run for any team.
  • Houston has the 2nd longest winning streak at home (14), only behind Navy (15)
  • Could be the largest crowd in TDECU history (Memphis game is the record)
  • Chance Allen thought that Greg Ward would be the one with the Heisman campaign this year - injuries have robbed him of that; only half the rushing TDs this year (9)
  • Sam’s interested to see what happens; CTH is 5-0 against ranked teams
  • American Championship chances are a longshot; ECU is really bad
  • Sam’s impressed with Chad Morris and what he’s done with SMU this year
  • Postma had surgery this morning in non-throwing arm; may come back for bowl game
  • Mason McClendon (walk-on QB) is now the holder
  • Emergency (if a bomb went off), Hunter McCoy or Bowman Sells would be next up after Ward and King
  • Kyle Allen is simulating Lamar Jackson this week as he did with Baker Mayfield (Sam: "Lamar Jackson isn’t Baker Mayfield, baby)
  • Run game: OLine is banged up and backfield is inexperienced
  • Sam’s thoughts on Thursday: Louisville is a very good team, should have won by more in some games, can’t go against Louisville on Thursday
  • JD believes Bowser came back with a vengeance and should be a factor against Louisville
  • Sam thinks that the DLine has to get push up the middle to create chaos and the edges have to be disciplined
  • Houston projected to the Birmingham, Military, and Miami Bowls
  • Sporting News projected a UH-A&M Birmingham Bowl
  • Sam remarks that Sumlin may not be there for the Bowl game due to the collapse
  • Myles Garrett has been injured since the Arkansas game and hasn’t been right
  • No Big 12 questions or CTH leaving questions
  • Other AAC bowl tie ins - Bahama Bowl, Boca Raton Bowl…nice locations
  • Might do another periscope Thursday…Thanks the Coogston tailgate and Brian McTaggart’s tailgate recently
  • Kam Eloph is the backup LG behind Denley…guard spots continue to rotate due to performance and injuries
