JD Periscope: Houston athletics chat: May 12

Runs 45:15

  • He’s at the T&F Conference Championship being held at UH.
  • Wrote an article about the Conference Championship today. Coogs going for their 2nd straight men’s title and 3rd in 4 years.
  • Coogs are expected to win again with the 2 questions being whether the women can win their side as well and also by how much the men will win.
  • Softball advanced to the AAC Championship and will play Tulsa tomorrow at 11 am on ESPN.
  • Softball has won 10 of last 12; RPI is 80 though so they have to win tomorrow.
  • Mentions that USF lost today in baseball (lost both games today and UH won to move into a tie for 1st with UCF).
  • Major Applewhite gave Schwarzenegger a jersey and mentions that it looked strange with how many letters were on it.
  • Video error at 5:10; had to skip to 5:14
  • Mentions the 2019 football schedule; says he doesn’t have it in front of him, but mentions they are working to try to fill them
  • Another video error at 6:01 and had to skip ahead to 6:03
  • Goes through baseball’s remaining schedule: Tulane this weekend, at McNeese Tuesday, home next weekend against Cincy
  • Says that he’s not going to get into the Whitting situation.
  • Says there are no hard feelings about Whitting; record speaks for itself over 20+ years. Mentions that news isn’t always good and that there is no agreement between him and coaches.
  • Says that the issue Sunday was an issue that had been building before that article was written; mentions that it was an issue with attendance at games. Says that they don’t regularly cover UT, A&M, or Rice baseball regularly (my issue is that 2 of those schools don’t reside in Houston).
  • Mentions the Sells rumor (now confirmed) and uses it to try to say that we should know JD and he isn’t just going to throw crap against the wall and how many periscopes has he done where he’s taken things like this and said he’ll get back to us, but wants to nail it down first.
  • Says that Sells has left the team. School should have something on this shortly.
  • Says that he sometimes gets something that’s very vague like this and that sometimes he digs and doesn’t really get anything from it. Other times, there’s info readily available from different sources and that he has to do his job…like in the case of the Romero situation…and that he has to do his job and there are no agreements with coaches about what he should/shouldn’t write.
  • At no point has he ever said that he’ll pull back info that he has because of the program whether its Sells or Romero.
  • Says not to worry about 2018 recruiting. Remembers that June was busy last year and that recruiting will pick up once school ends. Don’t read too much into the lack of commitements.
  • Poses question: Says he’s surprised that Taylor hasn’t gotten picked up; feels that its a Trevon Stewart situation. Doesn’t think that it’s a size issue. Doesn’t think there’s a lot of risk to bringing in a guy that has shown production. Always other paths to go pro: CFL, D-League types of leagues, etc
  • Mentions that the schedule for the meet today is light, mostly decathalon and heptathalon
  • Talks about baseball and says how big of a momentum boost it was to come back and win on Tuesday against Rice.
  • Cougar baseball is built to have a really good lineup when healthy. Pitching is deep, but just need the bats to come around, especially in a tourney environment.
  • Mentions that he’s seen the team projected to a Baton Rouge regional and that its a pretty big accomplishment for them to take a young team and get to this point.
  • Thinks 4-2 or 5-1 might get them a conference championship.
  • At this point, they’ll get an at-large. Hosting will be tough, but you never know if they go on a run.
  • Cam Burrell is still struggling with a foot injury and will be held out of the field events this weekend. They still have big hopes for him.
  • Coach Burrell thinks next year is the huge year for the program. They even redshirted their top distance runner (Barraza) in order to bring him back next year to be able to contribute. Means they won’t score too many points distance-wise this year, but it shouldn’t really matter so don’t freak out when you see the scores after the first 2 days.
  • Listens to the heptathalon/decathalon results that are about halfway through Day 1.
  • Talks about Savannah Heebner having a huge performance at the AAC tourney with her pitching and her bat at the tourney.
  • Says its really warm and will head back to the alumni center. Says he’ll be out there throughout the weekend.
  • Once the IPF is completed, the artificial turf will be removed from the AAC and they’ll install a proper track in order to host indoor meets.
  • Shows all the banners for Track in there and says it’s “domination” by the program. Mentions Coach Burrell and Coach Lewis and how incredible it is to have them as coaches.
  • Said he saw Coach Lewis yesterday and said he was pumped and loose about his guys.
  • Said he chatted with Major Applewhite as well.
  • Talks about the A&M Transfer (Chevis) and says that they had some injury concerns about Jerard Carter coming out of spring. Says it’s similar to Gavin Stansbury when he transferred in a couple of years ago.
  • Talks to Doc O’Shea for a little bit.
  • Gets set up within the AAC
  • UH hasn’t officially announced Chevis as signing, may be waiting until after graduation, but will announce him shortly. Talks about his measurables, 6-1 302. Says that DT is one of A&Ms deepest positions. Says that his biggest game was against Auburn where he caused a fumble.
  • Says that its hard to talk to coaches at this time of year, but says he does have good relationships with 99% of coaches on campus.
  • Todd Orlando signed a contract with UT for $1.15M. UH was going to try to pay him around $1M to stay as DC.
  • Mentions Kenny Guiton taking over for Darrell Wyatt as the WR coach
  • Dotson was going today at the NBA combine (did well)
  • UH isn’t going to be ranked to begin this year.
  • Talks about football transfers in: Chevis, WR from ASU, and OL
  • No mention of changing the defense up. Multiple look, attacking fronts. D’Onofrio has mentioned that if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it
  • Runs down some questions for football that he’s got: Some holes to fill on defense, how will Kyle Allen look, how will the offense look with Kyle Allen, OLine, running game.
  • Patrick Carr will not be on the team this coming season. Isn’t infraction or suspension related; just didn’t work out as fit in JD’s opinion. Had a big game spring game, but most of those runs came against 2’s and 3’s
  • Checked the roster, says that Carr is still listed so its not official yet.
  • Talks basketball and says that 2018 offers are out. This is the year to get excited about basketball with all the kids coming in, then goes over them a bit. Definitely gaining size.
  • Home games for basketball aren’t set yet. Could be at TSU, Toyota Center, or both. Nothing set yet.
  • Says that he’ll do a Cougar draft for basketball like he did for football.
  • Does a bit of a mock draft and says that the first 3 will probably be Hayes, Olajuwon, and Drexler (not sure about that).
  • Mentions the Cougar statue outside of Gate 2 is really cool looking
  • Have depth in basketball now even with the loss of Dotson.
  • I get a shout-out (Thanks JD.:grinning: I went ahead and did the bullet point thing because that’s what I do)
  • Again talks about how he hopes that the Whitting thing gets resolved soon and that he’ll keep providing the quality he’s provided. Says there’s a lot of good stories out there in UH Athletics and mentions that hopefully he can go to the Regional for baseball if it’s close enough.
  • Video error at 44:26 an skipped ahead to 44:29.
  • Thanks everyone for getting him to 10K followers on Twitter and says to shoot him an email if you have a question. He’ll always get back to you even if it takes him a day or two.
  • Leaves off with Bruno Mars playing in the background.

Bummer.

So the biggest highlight maker for the Red/White game isn’t a fit for JD’s offense? Smells fishy and with Allen’s performances this Spring, 6-6 is looking more and more likely.

Thank you for posting.
Sells leaves? We were told he was promised a chance to compete.
Carr not making the Team after a strong Spring?
It all boils down to our Coach and the Coaching staff making decisions. That is the hard part of being on the outside looking in. The expectations are there. Major knows that he has to win big now and that comes with making hard decisions. I would like to hear more of Postma’s progress. Any updates is greatly appreciated.

Regarding out T&F just pause for a moment and think how lucky we are to have Carl Lewis and Leroy Burell as Coaches. I am sure Mr. Tom Tellez is giving them some great advice.

We need to mention T&F coach Blackburn and the other assistants to this impressive coaching staff.

True, again we are extremely fortunate to have this T&F Coaching staff. Thank you for mentioning the others.

What is the Whitting situation he is talking about?

Duarte & Whitting had a petty fight.

Ferguson and Rutherford as well.

Coogs only 1 point out of the lead on the men’s side going into Championship Sunday and should dominate all the sprints and relays. Women are withing striking distance as well.

Day 3 video if you can’t make it out to the track:

Putting this in here because I don’t want to start a new thread, but the UH Cougar offices got new doors:
