Other safety-conscious coaches are also getting into the act:

Rugby/Rugby Union has used them for years

Thinking less concussions solves everything is what will eventually destroy football. If there isn’t some nation wide ban on full contact in practices, it will go on record that colleges and the NFL did not attempt to limit the exposure to brain damage with all the facts on CTE readily available.

Using the special headgear needs to be considered a step in the right direction but they should definitely not infer that it makes practices safe, only safer.

It is a contact sport, as long as they don’t hide the effects of playing from people then players are making the choice knowing the risks. They are responsible for their own decisions.

Thinking about what to wear when teams aren’t wearing full pads and uniforms is an evolution in the sport, Applewhite said. Ten years ago, Applewhite said, few teams were carrying around water bottles or putting urine charts inside bathroom stalls.

“Now everybody’s got their teams drinking water,” Applewhite said. “They’ve got their teams looking at hydration charts. As we learn more about this game, we have to adapt, evolve and protect our players.”
