Fast forward to this past Thursday, and Roberts headed out to UH for his official visit, and although he expected to see some good things, he was taken back by the experience and how the team and coaching staff made him feel.

“When I first got to campus, they introduced me, and they made me feel like family, Coach Sampson was cracking jokes,” said Roberts. “The coach for me, it’s like a coach, and a player thing. He was showing good energy, like he could lead me on the right path and stuff. We went to the coaches house to eat and as soon as I got there, they welcomed me, they made me feel like family.”

That environment, coupled with the program’s recent success, the Cougar’s history and tradition, and Coach Kelvin Sampson’s track record of getting players into the league, was enough for a commitment from J’wan. Houston was his first official visit and expect it to be his only one.

“Everything is shutdown. I will be signing in November, and I’m now just focusing on my senior season. I graduate in early June and then I’ll be ready to head to campus,” said Roberts.

As a prospect, the big man is known for having a motor that run’s in overdrive constantly. He’s really worked on his mid-range game, and has a nice touch when facing up from 12-16 feet. It’s that ability, along with his defensive impact, rebounding, and swatting shots, that drew a lot of praise from the UH staff and why they targeted him.

“It feels pretty good to pick the right school and a school that’s fit for me,” Roberts, who verbally committed in early September, said. “Signing to the University of Houston will benefit me and help me grow as a better person while helping me with my basketball skills.”

“The first time I saw J’Wan, I said ‘that kid fits us.’ I just liked him. He is a position-less athlete. He can play anywhere, and he has a developing offensive game,” Head Coach Kelvin Sampson said. “J’Wan is one of those athletic kids that has the WOW factor. He will create a lot of oooohs and aaaahs inside the Fertitta Center.”
