Biggest strength: SMU brings back almost everybody on an offense that began to find major traction late last year. Add a four-star transfer, and you’ve got one of the best offenses in the AAC.

Biggest question mark: Can the run defense avoid falling apart with turnover at defensive tackle? Can the defense a whole avoid the depth issues that led to a late-season collapse?

Biggest 2017 game: Tulsa comes to town on Oct. 26, and that game could define SMU’s role in either bowl projections or the AAC West title. It should also feature about 100 points.

Summary: Chad Morris has at least doubled SMU’s win total in each of his first two seasons in Dallas, and his Mustangs should be situated for further improvement this fall (though another doubling of wins probably isn’t in the cards).

– JuCo quarterback transfer D.J. Gillins had a strong practice. He has a rocket of an arm. You can see his lack of chemistry with receivers only because his targets are not prepared for how quickly the ball gets to them out of Gillins’ hand. He still needs to learn the offense, but the arm strength is definitely there.

– Ben Hicks said that his 15-pound weight loss dropped him three pant sizes from a 36 to a 33. He had to buy some new pants to go with his new physique. His mobility out of the pocket has certainly increased and he will be a bigger threat to run this year.

That one should be a fun one this year.

Sometimes, Dallas is in its own little world:

Grosbard: I expect to see Houston drop off partially because of losing Herman and partially because of the talent the Cougars lost, especially Greg Ward Jr. SMU has a chance to win the West because of a favorable schedule (7 home games, no USF on the schedule) but Navy has to be the favorite to win the division.

Wut?

Question: Who’s the one guy on defense that if they lost to injury it’d be a devastating loss for SMU?
Grosbard: Either CB Jordan Wyatt or DT Demerick Gary. There is no real replacement-level option if either got hurt and both are being counted on to be difference-makers this season. Will backer Jordon Williams would be a tough hole to fill, too.
