Opponent Watch 2018: USF

This game for us is in a bad position on our schedule. We play Navy the week before, they play UConn. My hope is that we can get up big on Navy quickly and prevent getting Ed and others beat up so they are fresh against USF. USF is going to come to play, and they look legit.

They are much better than ttu

You’re right. Everyone knows that teams play worse the week after playing a triple option team. Let’s hope USF plays well this week to keep a strong showing for the AAC nationally.

“Coach Gilbert gives us a chance to play football right now,” junior receiver Darnell Salomon said. “He gives us a chance to make space, do what we’ve got to do, and he knows that we’ve got potential to make big plays.”

In only eight quarters, Bulls fans have seen offensive wrinkles that revealed themselves rarely — if at all — in 2017.

Toss sweeps. Jet sweeps. Heavier doses of short passes. And a larger offensive ensemble.

Early returns have been positive: Barnett won the starting job in camp and has led the Bulls to a 3-0 record, with two wins against Power 5 teams. He ranks No. 8 nationally in total offense (352.3 yards per game) and 11th in total passing yards (918), nearly half of which (411) came in Saturday’s game in Chicago, where he led a fourth-quarter comeback from down 12 points against Illinois capped by a 50-yard touchdown pass with less than three minutes remaining.

Huge loss for the Bulls

Freshman receiver and return specialist Terrence Horne tore his ACL in practice leading up to the game and will miss the rest of the season.

Horne, a state track champion at Miramar High, made a name for himself Sept. 8 in a 49-38 home victory against Georgia Tech, in which he returned two kickoffs — 98 and 97 yards — for touchdowns, tying an NCAA record.

His 264 kick return yards against the Yellow Jackets set a school record, and his average of 47 yards per return led the nation heading into Saturday.

“We want to be a top 25 program,” Kelly said. "We haven’t done that. We want to win the American conference. We haven’t done that. We haven’t won any of the conferences we’ve been in. We want to do that. The closest we came was last year.

“We’ve been looking at a lot of things. No, 7-5 isn’t what we want. But Charlie Strong is also the only coach to play for a division title in our history, too. We have to build the football facility first. I would say that if Charlie went somewhere else, we’d still have to do it for any coach.”
