OT: Baylor Scandal(s)

So much for Briles returning after today. Lot more news today and with Briles now suing the University, lot of details are going to come out that haven’t already. Don’t blame Briles really; he wants to clear up his name so he can go coach at another big time school. Doesn’t want to end up like Dave Bliss:

Before the news broke of Briles’ suit, there were a few articles that were still debating whether the BOR would bring Briles back:

Baylor, listen to influential booster Drayton McLane
Drayton McLane and another Baylor board of regents member attend a Cowboys function
Baylor football stadium is named after Drayton McLane
McLane, who once owned the Houston Astros, said the school needs to make a decision on Briles

I asked him of all the criticisms that he has heard of Baylor throughout this saga that is nearly one year old, which one stung the worst.

He did not pause and said, “That we didn’t learn from [2003 and 2004].”

Maybe they did and the new leaders in charge simply forgot, or never learned. Whatever the case, they need to listen to Drayton McLane and get moving on this.

And the news about Briles broke:

Ex coach Art Briles rips Baylor, claims wrongful termination
http://collegefootball.ap.org/article/apnewsbreak-fired-coach-art-briles-lambastes-baylor

“The conclusion is inescapable that the motive of Baylor and the Board of Regents was to use its head football coach and the Baylor athletic department as a camouflage to disguise and distract from its own institutional failure to comply” with federal civil rights protections, Briles lawyer Ernest Cannon wrote to Baylor’s attorneys in the latest development in a scandal that has gripped the world’s largest Baptist university for months .

Art Briles accuses Baylor of wrongful termination

“Mr. Briles does not wish to settle the (lawsuit) and does not consent to any settlement in that case or any other case in which (Briles) is jointly named as a defendant and currently outstanding or filed in the future,” Briles’ attorney, Ernest Cannon, said.

Good legal breakdown of what Briles’ motion today means:

A buyout between Briles and Baylor still the most likely outcome

While Briles and Baylor appear at odds, that could change suddenly if they’re able to reach a financial buyout that works for both sides. Any buyout would likely contain non-disclosure and non-disparagement language. This language would assign monetary damages in the event that Briles or Baylor publicly disparaged the other or shared confidential information. This language would likely also position Briles and Baylor to work together on resolving any remaining litigation. At the end of the day, a buyout likely makes sense for both sides. We’ll see if one materializes.

And Briles settles quickly as Baylor continues to try to tie up all loose ends in their cover-u. Briles also drops the court filing he made yesterday:

Waco Tribune kind of buries the part about the fact that a Title IX complaint has been filed and that it takes the DOE a little time before it puts a University under investigation, but whatever…

Baylor not under federal Title IX investigation as scandal unfolds

Investigations are ongoing at eight Texas schools: Cisco College, Paul Quinn College, Southwestern University, Texas A&M University, University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, University of Texas-Pan American, Trinity University and University of Houston.

Today’s update, Baylor releases 5 from their LOI

Baylor releases 5 2016 signees from national letters of intent

The school did not name the prospects in question in a news release, but several outlets reported they are defensive back Parrish Cobb, defensive back Donovan Duvernay, offensive lineman Patrick Hudson, running back Kameron Martin and offensive lineman J.P. Urquidez.

Early on it looks like UT will benefit the greatest from Baylors downfall. [quote=“pray10, post:1, topic:670, full:true”]

To restore reputation, Baylor should be upfront, aggressive online about scandal

“There are two courts. There’s the court of law and the court of public opinion,” Burness, the former Duke spokesman, said. “It’s very important that the institution (Baylor) recognize that there are times when you almost have to take the legal consequences, because what is at stake is ultimately the brand of the institution as place of integrity or not.”

Baylor and Briles officially announce a parting of the way…on Friday…at 7 pm. Typical Baylor. It was not met with a positive response by the media:

The lawsuit does not name any victims or Baylor employees. One victim said she reported sexual assault to several faculty members and Baylor Judicial Affairs, but no action was taken.

Another was advised not to come forward about her sexual assault during a counseling session at the university. She claims she reported the assault to the Waco Police Department and was told she was reporting it too late and they would not conduct an investigation.

The third plaintiff claims that she went to the Baylor police department and they refused to take her report.

Baylor regents remain silent on own role in sexual assault scandal; Garland offers update

“That cannot be a coincidence of 30 people in a room, or however many there were, and nobody was taking notes,” Banks said. “That’s clearly a direction that nobody was going to take notes because they didn’t want any record of what was being said except for what would be in the 13-page summary that would be sent out.”
