Play-by-Play Video review: Arizona

Going to try this out and see what I can find. I’m going to rewatch the game and try to notice formations, breakdowns, notable performances, etc on each play. Now, I can only see what the camera shows so more than likely I won’t be able to see what the secondary is doing each play. I’ll post drive-by-drive to break up the length a bit. This also may not be straight through so there may be some time between posts if I need to take a break:

Prior to Kickoff

  • King was in uniform and had his helmet on before the game; guessing he couldn’t go or wasn’t prepped to play this week. My guess is we see him next week against Rice.

Opening Kickoff - Touchback

  • #85 Leday was the Kick Returner from the start
  • Others out there: #5 Wilder, #14 Johnson, #22 Robinson, #23 Terrell Williams, #25 Birden, #30 Stuard, #45 Doubenmeier (Couldn’t see the other 3)

Offense 1st and 10 from Houston 25 - 1Q 15:00
Starters: QB Allen, RB Birden, WR Bonner, Dunbar, and Leday, TE Brooker, OL J.Jones, B.Jones, Noble, Oliver, Rodgers
Play: Draw, Allen hands to Birden who runs off right tackle - Gain of 3 yards
Arizona D: 3-3-5, 5 on the line, 6 in the box
Good: Josh Jones pulls to the right and seals off rusher
Note: Oliver/Rodgers double teamed LDE, MLB unaccounted for and moved to spot to make tackle

Offense 2nd and 7 from Houston 28 - 1Q 14:27
Subs: Catalon in for Birden
Play: Read Option, Allen hands to Catalon who runs up the middle - Gain of 3 yards
Arizona D: 4 on line, 7 in the box, motion by Leday causes 6 in the box
Note: LB makes a nice play recognizing the handoff, crashes in and makes the tackle. Catalon hesitated and tried to cut outside when he thought hole made by Oliver/Rodgers was closing and ran into LB.

Offense 3rd and 4 from Houston 31 - 1Q 13:55
Subs: Corbin in for Brooker
Play: Empty set when Catalon goes in motion to the right - Allen sacked for 3 yards
Arizona D: 7 in the box, 4 rush
Note: Braylon Jones misses assignment and doesn’t get back in time to block rusher stunting towards the middle. Allen sees it early and tries to avoid, but has no chance. If he had time, he had Bonner on a quick slant for the first down.

Offense 4th and 7 from Houston 28 - 1Q 13:18
Lineup: LS Wildeberger, P Roy, Others: #1 Davis #5 Wilder, #8 Egbule #9 Adams #14 Johnson #23 T. Williams #25 Birden, #28 Burrell, #45 Doubenmeier
Play: Entire right side (Birden, Adams, Davis) moves early - False Start
Note: Considering that it was 3 of the captains moving, guessing there was miscommunication on the snap count

Offense 4th and 12 from Houston 23 - 1Q 13:18
Play: 44 yard punt, fair catch.
Note: Burrell should have been called for a false start as he shifted his feet prior to the snap. Johnson was at punt returner when ball was caught.

Good stuff, great details. You’ll notice the stuff not in the stats. Pretty sure Johnson was righ in front of ever punt returner. I’m interested who Wilder came in for and the cornerbacks rotation.

Defense 1st and 10 from Arizona 33 - 1Q 13:04
Starters: DL: Thurman, Oliver, Chevis, LB: Hines, Adams, Egbule, DB: Myres, T. Williams, K. Williams, (Assuming Davis and Winchester were other 2, but can’t see them)
Arizona Formation: Shotgun, 2 RB set
Play: Handoff to the left, tackled by Hines - Loss of 1 yard
Houston D: 6 in the box, but Terrell Williams comes on a blitz prior to snap
Note: Thurman was unblocked forcing RB to go right. Thurman missed the tackle, but Hines there to clean up.

Defense 2nd and 11 from Arizona 32 - 1Q 12:35
Arizona Formation: Shotgun, 1 RB, 4 WR
Play: QB sweep to left, tackled by Hines - Gain of 8 yards
Houston D: Chevis and Thurman swap sides, Egbule and Myres blitz
Note: Arizona OL did a great job sealing off Thurman, Oliver, and Adams. Hines (containment) blocked 8 yards down field. Lucky that Dawkins ran into OL blocking Hines.

Defense 3rd and 3 from Arizona 40 - 1Q 12:09
Arizona Formation: Shotgun, 1 RB, 4 WR
Play: Pass to right, 5 yards - Incomplete, ball thrown high
Houston D: Chevis and Thurman swap back. DL only rush
Note: Thurman and Oliver both double-teamed. Dawkins had all day, but was very bouncy as he made reads. Either, Egbule lost receiver in his zone or T. Williams was too far back as WR was wide open. Dawkins doesn’t look natural when throwing the ball.

Defense 4th and 3 from Arizona 40 - 1Q 12:03
Lineup: PR: #27 McDowell, Others: #5 Wilder, #13 J.WIlliams, #17 Mark, #18 Myres, #22 Robinson, #28 Burrell, #45 Doubenmeier, #46 Milburn (Couldn’t see numbers for other 2)
Play: Punted OB, 23 yards

Thank you pray, this is a nice breakdown.

Offense 1st and 10 from Houston 37 - 1Q 11:57
Lineup: Birden in at RB
Play: Allen hits Dunbar on a 10 yard curl, Dunbar runs and trips to Arizona 44 - 19 yard gain
Arizona D: 7 in box, 5 rush
Note: This time B. Jones picks up late blitzer and keeps Allen clean. Allen delivers a perfect strike. Dunbar probably gains at least 4 more yards if he doesn’t trip.

Offense 1st and 10 from Arizona 44 - 1Q 11:42
Play: Allen throws it OB downfield - Incomplete
Arizona D: 4 rush
Notes: Play was already going when came back from replay. Birden missed his block and Allen threw it away - Dunbar in the area of thrown ball, but well-covered.

Offense 2nd and 10 from Arizona 44 - 1Q 11:38
Subs: Dunbar out, but couldn’t see who replaced him (probably Corbin)
Play: Handoff Birden who runs between the pulling Oliver and Brooker - 33 yard gain
Arizona D; 6 in box, only 3 rush
Notes: Perfect execution as Oliver and Brooker created a huge hole and Birden hit it without hesitation. Great blocking by Bonner downfield as he rode his guy about 5 yards and eventually to the ground. Birden made one tackler miss before being brought down by 3 tacklers.

Offense 1st and 10 from Arizona 11 - 1Q 11:24
Subs: Dunbar back in, Corbin in as well
Play: Read Option, handoff Birden who runs between Noble/B.Jones - 3 yard gain
Arizona D: 7 in box
Notes: Straight rush up the gut on this one and Birden does a good job of barreling into the line and making something out of little

Offense 2nd and 7 from Arizona 8 - 1Q 10:57
Subs: Catalon in for Birden
Play: Shotgun snap, Allen pulls it down and runs - 10 yard gain
Arizona D: Drop 8 into coverage
Notes: Brooker was lined out wide for this play. Straight dropback, but Allen noticed a lot of space to the left immediately as the Arizona D dropped 8 into coverage and the line sealed 3 rushers to the right. Allen just missed getting in. Arizona player injured on the play.

Offense 1st and Goal from Arizona 1 - 1Q 10:37
Play: Read option, straight handoff to Catalon up the middle - no gain
Arizona D: Goal Line, 8 in the box
Notes: Bonner/Corbin/Dunbar lined up left. Line got no push and Catalon stood up by 4 guys when he got back to the LOS.

Offense 2nd and Goal from Arizona 1 - 1Q 10:16
Play: Same play, Allen keeps this time - Fumble, Houston recovers at Arizona 9 - 8 yard loss
Arizona D: Goal Line, 8 in the box
Notes: I think if Allen gives to Catalon, he scores this time as OL makes more of a push. Crashing LB causes him to keep it and makes the ankle tackle. Allen hit on way down and fumbles forward. Arizona defenders do a poor job falling on the ball and Corbin is able to get on it. If Allen doesn’t fumble, Coogs still lose 2 yards.

Offense 3rd and Goal from Arizona 9 - 1Q 9:40
Subs: Leday in for Brooker
Play: Straight dropback, Allen throws incomplete to Bonner at the goal line
Arizona D: 4 man rush
Notes: Bonner was open and Allen tried to lead him into the endzone as I don’t think Bonner did a good job of finishing the route as he seemed to stop while Allen thought he was going to keep going. Allen threw a bit low, but Bonner should have made the catch. Would have been a TD if he catches it.

Offense 4th and Goal from Arizona 9 - 1Q 9:33
Lineup: LS: Wildeberger, Holder: McClendon, K: Novikoff, Others: #8 Egbule, #51 Rodgers, #52 B. Jones, #73 Oliver, #74 J. Jones, #90 Vaughan, #91 Thurman (Don’t know who last one was)
Play: 27 yard FG, good

Coogs lead 3-0

Kickoff - 1Q 9:33
Lineup: K: Novikoff, Others: #2 K. Williams, #5 Wilder, #6 Rosette, #8 Egbule, #13 J. Williams, #46 Milburn (Couldn’t see other 4)
Play: Touchback
Note: Milburn and J.Williams 1st down the field

Defense 1st and 10 from Arizona 25 - 1Q 9:33
Subs: I.Johnson in at CB, guessing for Myres
Arizona Formation: Shotgun, 1 RB, FB/TE lined up in front of RB, 3 WR
Play: Arizona read option, handoff to the left, Oliver/Hines make tackle - 2 yard gain
Houston D: 6 in the box, Hines and Adams switch, K. Williams blitzes
Note: OL double-teams Oliver, but he’s able to maintain ground and slip away to wrap up RB

Defense 2nd and 8 from Arizona 27 - 1Q 9:09
Arizona Formation: Shotgum, 1 RB, 3 WR
Play: Straight pass, roll right, Pass complete to wide-open TE in flat, tackled by Davis - 6 yard gain
Houston D: 6 in box, K. WIlliams blitzes
Note: High snap forces Dawkins to jump, but K.Williams picked up by RB. TE finds spot where K.Williams blitzed and Dawkins finds him easily. Davis with a good tackle in the open field

Defense 3rd and 2 from Arizona 33 - 1Q 8:47
Arizona Formation: Shtogun, 1RB, 3 WR
Play: Read Option, handoff up the middle, Oliver makes tackle - no gain
Houston D: Oliver lines up as LDE, Chevis at DT, T.Williams blitzes
Note: LT had to block Thurman or T. Williams and goes for Williams which leaves Thurman free. Oliver just beats the RT who can’t do anything to stop his strength by himself. Both Thurman and Oliver meet the RB behind the line and Adams comes in to finish him off

Defense 4th and 2 from Arizona 33 - 1Q 8:09
Play: 52 yard punt, downed
Note: McDowell let it bounce at the 30, good decision. Ball hits and unluckily shoots towards goalline where downed at 15.

Offense 1st and 10 from Houston 15 - 1Q 7:58
Subs: Catalon in, Leday in
Play: Straight dropback, Allen hits Bonner on a corner - 22 yard gain
Arizona D: Rush 5
Notes: OL/Catalon/Brooker did a fantastic job picking up the rush as Allen had a clean pocket. Throw was perfect.

Offense 1st and 10 from Houston 37 - 1Q 7:34
Play: Read Option, Allen hands off to Catalon who runs between Oliver/Rodgers - 4 yard gain. Penalty on Rodgers for helping Catalon causes a 1 yard loss
Arizona D: Rush 5
Notes: If Brooker seals his guy to the inside, Catalon breaks free to the sideline. Still, strong run by Catalon to get that 4 as it took 2 tacklers to bring him down. Penalty was obvious as Catalon was going down and Rodgers caught him, picked him up, and put him back down. Catalon actually gained 4 more after Rodgers caught him, but refs only gave him the initial 4.

Offense 1st and 11 from Houston 36 - 1Q 7:04
Play: Screen to Catalon, dropped - Incomplete
Arizona D: Rush 5
Notes: Catalon goes in motion and leaves an empty backfield. Blitz comes from right side and Allen quickly lobs it to Catalon. Mental error as he just drops it. Would have had a lot of room to run.

Offense 2nd and 11 from Houston 36 - 1Q 6:50
Subs: Corbin in for Leday
Play: Read Option, handoff to Catalon - no gain
Arizona D: 6 in the box
Notes: Bonner lines up in the backfield and goes in motion. Catalon gets the handoff and there’s a huge hole between Noble/Oliver for a split second, but Noble can’t keep his guy blocked and the hole closes before Catalon can get there.

Offense 3rd and 11 from Houston 36 - 1Q 6:15
Play: Straight Dropback, pass complete to Bonner on an in-route - 4 yard gain
Arizona D: rushes 4
Notes: Allen sees a blitz coming from the left side and changes the play. Hits Bonner quickly, but D only rushed 4 so they are able to contain easily to force a punt.

Offense 4th and 7 from Houston 40 - 1Q 5:40
Play: 40 yard punt, fair catch
Note: Johnson was again at the punt returner when the ball was caught. Returner caught the ball at the 19, but official placed it at the 20.

Defense 1st and 10 from Arizona 20 - 1Q 5:33
Subs: None that I could see. I.Johnson still in at CB
Arizona Formation: Shotgun, 1 RB, 3 WR
Play: Read Option, handoff to the right, Oliver makes the tackle - 4 yard gain
Houston D: K.Williams blitzed
Note: Hines is able to meet the RB in the backfield, but is literally tackled from behind by an OL. Oliver is able to slip off his block, and meet the RB 4 yards down field to stand him up. Adams comes in after to help push him back.

Defense 2nd and 7 from Arizona 23 - 1Q 4:58
Arizona Formation: Shotgun, 5 WR
Play: Quick Slant to the 30 - Incomplete
Houston D: Hines blitzes off the edge, zone coverage, no pressing
Note: Quick slant play, but T. Williams lights up the WR as the ball gets there to cause the incompletion.

Defense 3rd and 7 from Arizona 23 - 1Q 4:53
Arizona Formation: 1RB, 4 WR (3 to the left)
Play: Dawkins rolls right away from blitz, and finds WR along the sideline, Johnson makes the tackle- 17 yard gain
Houston D: 4 on the line as Egbule moves up, Adams is basically playing safety, Davis comes on a blitz, Thurman drops into coverage
Note: Good play call by Arizona. Thurman looked lost in coverage; he was too far off the sideline in his zone, and too close to Hines, which allowed the WR to get open along the sideline. Johnson made a good tackle.

Defense 1st and 10 from Arizona 40 - 1Q 4:40
Arizona Formation: 1RB, 4 WR (3 to the left)
Play: Pitch left, Davis makes the tackle- 6 yard gain
Houston D: Egbule on the line and rushes with DL
Note: Oliver’s penetration on this play was incredible, too bad the play went outside. K. Williams completely whiffs on a tackle. Davis, luckily, was able to grab the RB’s ankle and hold on

Defense 2nd and 4 from Arizona 46 - 1Q 4:05
Arizona Formation: 1RB, 4 WR
Play: Read Option, handoff going left, Adams makes the tackle - 5 yard gain
Houston D: Egbule on the line and rushes with DL
Note: Dawkins changes the play at the line. Chevis has the runner in the backfield, but misses the tackle. Adams has to clean it up down field after he gains the first down.

Defense 1st and 10 from Houston 49 - 1Q 3:38
Arizona Formation: 1RB, 4 WR (3 to the right)
Play: Shotgun, QB Sweep, Egbule tackle - 1 yard gain
Houston D: 3 man front again, T.Williams blitzes
Note: Coogs read this well and Egbule made a nice tackle.

Defense 2nd and 9 from Houston 48 - 1Q 3:08
Subs: Adams lost his helmet so A.Robinson in
Arizona Formation: 1RB, 4 WR
Play: Dropback, throw deep - Incomplete
Houston D: 4 man front with Egbule rushing, Hines on a delayed blitz
Note: Oliver was double-teamed. No pressure. Johnson was step for step with the WR, but ball was overthrown.

Defense 3rd and 9 from Houston 48 - 1Q 3:01
Subs: Wilder and Godfrey in, Chevis and Thurman out. Also Winchester may have come in for Johnson so Myres may have been in for him this series
Arizona Formation: 1RB, 4 WR
Play: Pass to the right flat, Winchester and T. Williams make the tackle - 14 yard gain
Houston D: Godfrey, Egbule, and Oliver rush, Davis blitzes
Note: Odd alignment as the Coogs go with Oliver as the only one with a hand down. Hines loses the man in his zone and Dawkins hits the wide-open WR.

Defense 1st and 10 from Houston 34 - 1Q 2:39
Subs: Vaughan and Thurman in at DL. Adams back in. Godfrey, Robinson, and Wilder out
Arizona Formation: 1RB, 4 WR
Play: QB Run to the left, K.Williams makes the tackle - 2 yard gain
Houston D: 4 man front with Egbule on the line
Note: Coogs had this one read well and K. Williams makes a nice shoestring tackle

Defense 2nd and 8 from Houston 32 - 1Q 2:04
Arizona Formation: 1 RB, 3 WR
Play: Play-action, rollout to the right - Incomplete
Houston D: 4 man front with Egbule on the line, K. Williams on a delayed blitz
Note: Pressure by K. Williams forces Dawkins to try to lob it to the WR, but he throws it too far. Winchester step-for-step with the WR.

Defense 3rd and 8 from Houston 32 - 1Q 1:58
Subs: Godfrey and ?? in, Vaughan and Thurman out
Arizona Formation: 1 RB, 3 WR
Play: Play-action, quick hit to the right sideline, Winchester/Davis make the tackle - 3 yard gain
Houston D: Godfrey, Oliver, Hines, Egbule rush
Note: Winchester and Davis reacted well to make the tackle

Defense 4th and 5 from Houston 29 - 1Q 1:14
Subs: Wilder in for Davis, Thurman and Vaughan in for Godfrey and ??
Play: 45 yard FG, good

Score: 3-3

What’s up with odd alignment with Ed Oliver the only one with hands down the line…is this something that Orlando ran

i figured this would help with the times to see exactly what happened.

Never again please. It is 1 yard, hand if off to Birden.

That helps a ton. I’ve been doing this using ESPN replay and there’s no way to pinpoint rewinding and forwarding so often, I have to sit through 30-40 seconds just to get where I need to be. Lot easier on YouTube.

Kickoff - 1Q 1:08
Lineup Notes: #83 Derek McLemore was out there
Play: Touchback

Offense 1st and 10 from Houston 25 - 1Q 1:08
Subs: Birden at RB, Jefferson at WR
Play: Read Option, Handoff to Birden running right between Oliver/Rodgers - 8 yard gain
Arizona D: 7 in the box, rush 4
Notes: Rodgers sealed off his man, Noble did enough on his guy and Oliver went to the 2nd level and sealed off his and Noble’s guy to break Birden free. Bonner is unable to keep his man engaged which is who makes the tackle. If Birden bounces to the sideline, he goes a long way.

Offense 2nd and 2 from Houston 33 - 1Q :50
Play: Read Option, Handoff to Birden running up the middle - 5 yard gain
Arizona D: 6 in the box
Notes: M. Oliver is regularly getting to the 2nd level and making blocks; impressive 1st quarter so far. Not sure how Birden got through the hole on this one as it was tiny. Looked like Rodgers and Oliver made just enough of a hole for him to get through.

Offense 1st and 10 from Houston 38 - 1Q :36
Play: Play Action, Allen Drops back and hits Dunbar on a curl route - 7 yard gain
Arizona D: 6 in the box
Notes: This was easy. Line did a great job keeping the pocket clean and Allen hit Dunbar as he was coming open from the curl.

End of the 1st Quarter

Offense 2nd and 3 from Houston 45 - 2Q 15:00
Subs: Catalon in for Birden
Play: WR screen to Bonner - 4 yard gain
Arizona D: 7 in the box
Notes: Bonner in motion prior to snap, Allen throws immediately. Jefferson did a poor job blocking his guy, but Bonner was able to spin away and get 4 yards due to a Dunbar block.

Offense 1st and 10 from Houston 49 - 2Q 14:41
Play: Allen passes to Brooker - 12 yard gain
Arizona D: 6 in box, blitz comes from left side
Notes: Brooker was lined up wide outside of Jefferson. Allen throws the ball before Brooker has even made his cut. Brooker made the first guy miss and gained about 5 more yards before stepping OB.

Offense 1st and 10 from Arizona 39 - 2Q 14:14
Play: Read Option to Catalon - 1 yard gain
Arizona D: 6 in the box, safety just outside of it
Notes: No hole opened up on this one and Catalon did his best to get what he could.

Offense 2nd and 9 from Arizona 38 - 2Q 13:43
Play: Allen pass to Dunbar down the sideline - incomplete
Arizona D: 7 in the box, blitz comes from both sides
Notes: This looked ugly. Catalon is running as if it’s a play-action, but Allen takes two steps back and lobs it down field. Rusher coming from the blind side comes free and gets a lick on Allen after he gets rid of it. 3 other rushers were right behind him as Rodgers, Oliver, and J. Jones had trouble with their blocks. Brooker is moving to the 2nd level to make a block when he was closest to the rusher coming free. Looked like the protection call was messed up on this one. Dunbar was covered and almost gets a hand on the ball, but didn’t really have a shot at it.

Offense 3rd and 9 from Arizona 38 - 2Q 13:38
Subs: Leday in for Brooker
Play: 3 step drop, pass to Dunbar - 15 yard gain
Arizona D: 6 in box, blitz from right
Notes: Nice quick hitter to Dunbar at the 33, defender is 6 yards off of him. Dunbar then runs over 2 guys and gets to the 23.

Offense 1st and 10 from Arizona 23 - 2Q 13:22
Play: Allen pass to endzone for Jefferson - Incomplete, Jefferson called for Offensive Pass Interference
Arizona D: 6 in the box, only rush 4
Notes: Line did a great job and Allen had all day. Allen makes a half-hearted pump to Bonner before launching it to Jefferson. Good placement on the throw. OPI call was weak. Yes, he put his hand out and gently pushed off, but the defender had both hands on Jefferson when it happened…looked like normal WR/DB handfighting. Defender made a nice play to recover and hit Jefferson as he caught it, forcing him OB. Jefferson landed full weight on his right shoulder and head and had to leave the ball game. When they were walking him off, he seemed a little woozy and they didn’t seem too concerned with the shoulder.

Offense 1st and 25 from Arizona 38 - 2Q 13:15
Subs: Corbin in for Jefferson
Play: Read Option - Handoff to Catalon - 1 yard loss
Arizona D: 7 in the box and another just outside playing press coverage on Dunbar
Notes: Rodgers pulls, but stops short of blocking the crashing LB on the left side. Unfortunately, that’s who makes the tackle before Catalon has a chance to get going.

Offense 2nd and 26 from Arizona 39 - 2Q 12:49
Play: Straight Drop - Allen rolls out and throws it away - incomplete
Arizona D: 5 in the box, only rush 4
Notes: Catalon goes in motion and this seems like it should have been set up for a RB screen to the left with Bonner/Corbin/Brooker in front of him. Allen never looks that way and only focuses on Dunbar on the other side. Eventually has to roll out and throw it away. Dunbar was double-covered. Poor decision by Allen as Catalon would have had a ton of room.

Offense 3rd and 26 from Arizona 39 - 2Q 12:42
Play: Crossing route to Dunbar - 19 yard gain
Arizona D: 4 in box, 7 in deep coverage
Notes: Easy crossing route to Dunbar at the 35 who makes 2 guys miss before being ridden OB at the 21. Ref gives us an extra yard and spots the ball at the 20.

Offense 4th and 7 from Arizona 20 - 2Q 12:32
Lineup Note: #82 Brooker was the last one that I missed on the last FG
Play: 37 yard FG, no good wide left
Note: Novikoff kicked it straight ahead, problem was the ball was on the left hash mark.

I hear what you’re saying and agree, but on those two plays, Birden wouldn’t have made a difference.

I think I remember us running some odd sets. I think, for this game, they wanted speed on the field in 3rd and long situations. Probably were more worried about Dawkins running.

Defense 1st and 10 from Arizona 20 - 2Q 12:08
Subs: Wilder in for Davis, Johnson/Winchester in at CB
Arizona Formation: Shotgun, 1RB, 4WR
Play: Dawkins pass in the flat, T. Williams makes the tackle - 7 yard gain
Houston D: 3 Man rush, Hines delayed blitz
Note: Egbule went a little too far to the sideline as he followed his initial receiver. Targeted receiver was able to slip into his zone and make the catch.

Defense 2nd and 3 from Arizona 27 - 2Q 11:33
Arizona Formation: Shotgun, 1RB, 4WR
Play: Fake pitch to right, roll left, pass downfield - Incomplete. Penalty on offense, ineligible man downfield
Houston D: 3 man rush
Note: Chevis and Egbule played this very well and were able to get pressure on Dawkins as he rolled left. Egbule even got a nice hit on Dawkins as he released the ball while Chevis got his hands up to force him to throw over. Caused the ball to be lobbed and land short of the WR who was open. Looked like Winchester wasn’t paying attention to the receiver crossing behind him. Wouldn’'t have mattered as the offense is penalized for an ineligible man down field.

Defense 2nd and 8 from Arizona 22 - 2Q 11:27
Arizona Formation: Shotgun, 1RB, 4WR
Play: Straight drop, pressured, sacked by Egbule - 2 yard loss
Houston D: 4 man line with Egbule, Thurman drops into coverage, Adams on a delayed blitz
Note: Egbule goes right around the LT and forces Dawkins out of the pocket. Chevis has him 7 yards behind the LOS, but whiffs. Egbule chases him down and Thurman comes up to help finish him off.

Defense 3rd and 10 from Arizona 20 - 2Q 10:50
Subs: Davis/Godfrey in for Chevis/Thurman
Arizona Formation: Shotgun, 1RB, 4WR
Play: Dawkins throws deep - Incomplete. Pass interference on T. Williams
Houston D: 5 man front, Oliver, Godfrey, Hines, Egbule rush; Adams drops into coverage
Notes: Hines gets good pressure and hits Dawkins as he’s throwing. Ball is lobbed high into the air to receiver that gets behind Johnson. T. Williams is out of position and rushes over to make play, but puts arm around receiver before ball gets there. Good call on the penalty.

Defense 1st and 10 from Arizona 35 - 2Q 10:40
Subs: Vaughn/Thurman in for Davis/Godfrey
Arizona Formation: Shotgun, 1RB, 4WR (3 WR to left)
Play: Play Action, WR bubble screen - Incomplete
Houston D: 3 man front
Notes: K. Williams put his helmet right on the ball. This was a fumble as the receiver caught it, secured it, and started to move upfield before the hit came. Refs immediately called it incomplete.

Defense 2nd and 10 from Arizona 35 - 2Q 10:33
Arizona Formation: Shotgun, 1RB, 4WR
Play: Straight drop, hit WR on post, Wilder makes tackle - 35 yard gain. Penalty on Oliver for Hands to the Face
Houston D: 3 man front, Hines delayed blitz
Notes: Missed snap due to replay. No pressure. Wilder had coverage and was there, but ball thrown perfectly. Refs get Oliver for grabbing the OL facemask for an additional 15 yards.

Defense 1st and 10 from Houston 15 - 2Q 10:26
Arizona Formation: Shotgun, 2RB, 3WR
Play: Handoff going right, Hines makes tackle - 2 yard gain
Houston D: 4 man front, T. Williams blitzes
Notes: Coogs had good contain with Williams blitzing. Hines makes a nice tackle

Defense 2nd and 8 from Houston 13 - 2Q 9;45
Arizona Formation: Shotgun, 2RB, 3WR
Play: False Start
Houston D: 4 man front
Notes: Handoff going left that K. Williams sniffed out for a loss, but play was blown dead for a False Start

Defense 2nd and 13 from Houston 18 - 2Q 9:39
Subs: Davis in for Wilder
Arizona Formation: Shotgun, 2RB, 3WR
Play: QB run right, fake the end around, K. Williams makes tackle - 2 yard loss
Houston D: 4 man front
Notes: Coogs had good contain on this play and weren’t fooled by the fake end-around. K. Williams came barreling in to make the tackle behind the line

Defense 3rd and 15 from Houston 20 - 2Q 8:49
Arizona Formation: Shotgun, 1RB, 4 WR
Play: RB screen to the left, Davis makes tackle - 7 yard gain
Houston D: 3 man front
Notes: Williams misses a tackle that would have caused a loss. Winchester was held further down field to cause him to miss the tackle (ref looking right at it too). Davis finally makes the tackle with some help from Adams

Defense 4th and 8 from Houston 13 - 2Q 8:41
Play: 30 yard FG, no good, blocked by Oliver
Notes: Snap was bad and holder had to pick it up. Caused kicker to hesitate and kicked it low into Oliver

Is there a fullback or TE that can line up in a 2-back set to help lead the way? Can Burrell be that guy?

At this point, just put in Big Ed at fullback and let him clear a lane.

Just give him the ball and stand back…

I kind of like that idea. Even putting Brooker a step back on the line to try and clear a running path may be better than running a straight read option with him on the line. They used that formation a few times outside of the goalline.
