Play-by-Play Video review: Arizona

Back to the grind. I’ll try and have the first half done this evening as there’s only 3 more drives to go.

Offense 1st and 10 from Houston 20 - 2Q 8:26
Subs: Birden and Leday in
Play: Pitch to Leday who runs off LT - 5 yard gain
Arizona D: 6 in the box, safety blitz
Notes: Arizona safety blitzing read this well, but Birden did a good job of sealing him off. Line did an excellent job of sealing off the inside.

Offense 2nd and 5 from Houston 25 - 2Q 7:56
Play: Read Option, handoff to Birden running right - 1 yard gain
Arizona D: 7 in the box, rush 4
Notes: First time I’ve seen Oliver get manhandled as he gets pushed about 3 yards back, B. Jones also gets pushed back. Run was designed to run right between Noble and Oliver, but goes nowhere due to Oliver getting pushed back.

Offense 3rd and 4 from Houston 26 - 2Q 7:20
Play: Wheel to Birden - 11 yard gain
Arizona D: 6 in the box, 4 rushing with blitz coming from left
Notes: Arizona D slow to pick up Birden out of the backfield and Allen hits him early. Birden makes initial guy miss to get first down and more, eventually needs two to bring him down. Dunbar misses a block that could have led to more yards.

Offense 1st and 10 from Houston 37 - 2Q 6:51
Play: Read Option, draw to Birden off LT - 2 yard gain
Arizona D: 6 in the box, 5 rushing
Notes: Rodgers does a nice job pulling to the left to open a hole. J. Jones does a poor job sealing his man, tries to recover, and then gets in Birden’s way as 6 defenders converge.

Offense 2nd and 8 from Houston 39 - 2Q 6:16
Subs: Catalon in for Birden, Corbin in for Leday
Play: Fake pitch to Bonner, bomb to Corbin - 49 yard gain
Arizona D: 5 in the box, 4 rush with blitz coming from left
Notes: Pitch to Leday earlier in the drive works as defense is fooled a bit by fake to Bonner. Allen has plenty of time and delivers a perfectly thrown ball to Corbin who makes a nice catch. Defensive Pass Interference as defender has his hand on Corbin’s shoulder, but Corbin also had an arm extended to hold him off; guess they decided to call it the other way this time. Penalty was declined. Corbin landed at the 14, but ref spots ball at the 12.

Offense 1st and 10 from Arizona 12 - 2Q 5:52
Play: Read Option, handoff Catalon running to the right edge - 6 yard gain
Arizona D: 7 in the box, 3 rush
Notes: Arizona D does a poor job of contain as they collapse on the middle. B. Jones pulls right and seals off the line. Catalon makes first guy miss in open space with ease.

Offense 2nd and 4 from Arizona 6 - 2Q 5:29
Play: Read Option, fake pitch to Dunbar, handoff Catalon running right - 1 yard gain
Arizona D: 8 in the box, 3 rush
Notes: Rodgers gets blown up and pushed into Brooker who’s coming across to help seal the outside which pushes him into Catalon. Catalon makes a yard of literally nothing.

Offense 3rd and 3 from Arizona 5 - 2Q 5:06
Play: Bubble Screen to Bonner on the left - TD
Arizona D: 7 in the box
Notes: Corbin makes a nice initial block and Bonner bulls his way through 3 guys for the TD

Extra Point - 2Q 5:00
Play: XP, good straight down the middle

Houston 10, Arizona 3

Kickoff - 2Q 5:00
Lineup: Besides who I already mentioned before: #1 Davis, #18 Myres, #45 Doubenmeier (Still missing one)
Play: Touchback

Defense 1st and 10 from Arizona 25 - 2Q 5:00
Subs: Fleming in at DT for Chevis, Oliver to LDE; Wilder in for T. WIlliams, Johnson/Winchester at CB
Arizona Formation: Shotgun, 1 RB, 4 WR (3 to right)
Play: Play-Action, quick out to WR in flat on left - incomplete
Houston D: 6 in the box, K. Williams blitzes before snap
Note: Just a poor throw by Dawkins who throws it well behind the WR.

Defense 2nd and 10 from Arizona 25 - 2Q 4:57
Arizona Formation: Shotgun, 1 RB, 4 WR
Play: Read Option, handoff up the middle, Adams makes tackle - 6 yard gain
Houston D: 6 in the box, K. Williams blitzes before snap
Note: Ran right between Fleming and Thurman, neither can disengage. Adams with a huge hit.

Defense 3rd and 4 from Arizona 31 - 2Q 4:40?
Arizona Formation: No idea, Ed Oliver graphic was up for the entire play
Play; Not sure, but I’m guessing a quick out to the sideline, Davis makes tackle - 4 yard gain
Houston D: No idea, Ed Oliver graphic was up for the entire play
Note: Thanks, ESPN . Announcer mentions that receiver may not have gotten to first down marker, but no replay shown.

Defense 1st and 10 from Arizona 35 - 2Q 4:22
Arizona Formation: Shotgun, 1 RB, 4 WR
Play: Pitch left, Johnson makes tackle - 27 yard gain
Houston D: 6 in the box, only DL rush
Note: Adams overpursues and Thurman takes himself out by slamming into Adams when RB changes direction, RB makes Oliver miss on the cutback, good blocking by Arizona to seal off containment including a great block that takes out Winchester and K. Williams, luckily Johnson was fast enough to track him down from the other side of the field. Thurman is injured on the play, looked like the wind got knocked out of him and he jumps up and runs off the field.

Defense 1st and 10 from Houston 38 - 2Q 3:50
Subs: Chevis/Vaughan in for Thurman/Oliver, T. Williams in for Wilder
Arizona Formation: Shotgun, 1 RB, 3 WR
Play: Handoff off left guard, Hines makes tackle - 17 yard gain
Houston D: 6 in the box, 4 rush (line and Egbule)
Note: Initally, there was a big hole off left guard, but Fleming did a nice job collapsing that hole, RB was able to cut back and Egbule loses contain on the cutback, good blocking out front takes Johnson and T.Williams out of play, Hines chases down from behind

Defense 1st and 10 from Houston 21 - 2Q 3:24
Arizona Formation: Shotgun, 1 RB, 3 WR
Play: QB sweep right, Fleming makes tackle - 2 yard gain
Houston D: 6 in the box, 3 rush, T. WIlliams blitzes
Note: Run goes right to where Williams is blitzing from, Adams blows up his block to force cutback, Fleming there to finish off

Defense 2nd and 9 from Houston 19 - 2Q 2:54
Arizona Formation: Shotgun, 1 RB, 3 WR
Play: Play Action - Corner route to the endzone - Incomplete, Defensive Pass Interference on I.Johnson
Houston D: 7 in the box, 3 rush, Hines delayed blitz
Note: Defense does a good job of not falling for the play fake, Hines gets pressure on Dawkins on the delayed blitz, Dawkins lofts it to endzone where there are 2 WR in the same area. Johnson looked like he was denying a post pass in basketball and got a little too handsy. Good call.

Defense 1st and Goal from Houston 4 - 2Q 2:45
Arizona Formation: Shotgun, 1 RB, 2WR
Play: Read Option - Handoff off RT, Hines/Davis makes tackle - 3 yard gain
Houston D: 9 in the box, K. WIliams blitzes off edge
Note: K. Williams whiffs on tackle behind the line, Hines and Davis stop RB before he scores

Defense 2nd and Goal from Houston 1 - 2Q 2:29
Arizona Formation: Shotgun, 1 RB, 2WR
Play: Read Option - Handoff up the middle - TD
Houston D: 9 in the box, K. WIliams blitzes off edge
Note: Line did just enough to make a hole between Chevis and Oliver and RB just gets the ball over the line

Extra Point - 2Q 2:22
Play: XP, good straight down the middle

Houston 10, Arizona 10

Kickoff - 2Q 2:22
Lineup: Besides who I already mentioned before: #12 Hines and #46 Godfrey are the other two on kickoff team I hadn’t mentioned
Play: Leday returns kickoff 81 yards
Notes: McLemore makes a nice block initially to allow Leday to cutback to left where he makes one defender miss, Hines made a nice block in the middle, Stuard gets out in front and pushes the kicker down freeing Leday, Godfrey keeps one guy from getting an angle, Robinson can’t keep his guy engaged which is who makes the tackle

Offense 1st and 10 from Arizona 16 - 2Q 2:08
Subs: Birden at RB, Corbin at WR
Play: Screen to Bonner - Loss of 5 yards
Arizona D: 7 in the box, 4 rushing
Notes: Dunbar is shoved 5 yards back and right into Bonner as he makes the catch. Arizona D knew what was coming

Offense 2nd and 15 from Arizona 21 - 2Q 1:36
Play: Bubble Screen to Bonner - 7 yard gain
Arizona D: 6 in the box, 4 rushing
Notes: Arizona D was playing well off, Brooker and Corbin make nice blocks to free Bonner

Offense 3rd and 8 from Arizona 14 - 2Q 1:16
Play: Screen to Birden who was lined up to right - 11 yard gain
Arizona D: 5 in the box, 4 rushing
Notes: Coogs going uptempo here and Arizona having problems keeping up. Birden lined up behind Bonner/Dunbar/Brooker at the snap, makes first guy miss who got past Bonner. Dunbar and Brooker both make good blocks to spring Birden.

Offense 1st and 10 from Arizona 3 - 2Q :50
Play: Read Option, Handoff to Birden off RG - TD
Arizona D: 8 in the box, 4 rushing
Notes: Strong initial push by the line and Birden sneaks in through small hole between Oliver and Noble. Big answer that takes the crowd right back out of the game after they started getting loud

Extra Point - 2Q :45
Play: XP, good straight down the middle

Houston 17, Arizona 10

Kickoff - 2Q :45
Play: Touchback

Defense 1st and 10 from Arizona 25 - 2Q :45
Subs: Vaughn in for Thurman, Myres in at CB for Johnson
Arizona Formation: Shotgun, 1 RB, 4 WR (3 to right)
Play: Read Option, handoff up the middle, Adams makes tackle - 4 yard gain
Houston D: 6 in the box, Davis blitzing
Note: Oliver collapses right side, but RB cuts back through hole up the middle, Adams makes a good open field tackle

Defense 2nd and 5 from Arizona 29 - 2Q :23
Arizona Formation: Shotgun, 1 RB, 4 WR (3 to right)
Play: Read Option, handoff up the middle, Oliver makes tackle - 5 yard gain
Houston D: 6 in the box, 4 man rush (Line and Egbule)
Note: Line pushes DL to the left giving RB room to run. Adams misses tackle, but Oliver cleans it up

End of 1st half - Houston 17, Arizona 10

Quick 1st Half thoughts

Offense:

  • At times, the offense looked like a smooth machine, but there were some glaring mistakes that stopped it from scoring a lot more.
  • Birden should be the goalline back. He can find holes where there aren’t any and hits holes quick. This isn’t to downgrade Catalon, who was very unlucky this half with some blocking issues and QB decision-making when he was in, but Birden is the better short yardage runner. Both backs are very good and it’s nice to have 2 solid RBs again.
  • The line did some good things, but there were quite a few mistakes that killed plays. Catalon seemed to be the victim almost every time when it happened. Pass protection was solid as Allen was under pressure only once the entire half, and that was on him.
  • WR’s did a good job, no complaints, other than Dunbar needing new cleats/shoes because he kept tripping (foreshadowing). I’m not going to kill them for not making every block as they are WR first.
  • Now to Allen: Allen looked fantastic when he ran the play called. His passes were on point and he looked confident. However, there were at least 3 plays where he seemed to go against the play call
  1. The play at the goalline where he fumbled. Seemed Allen made the decision to be the hero; right play was to handoff to Catalon again and the Coogs probably score. Instead, he gets hit behind the line, fumbles, and the Coogs get lucky to get a FG out of it.
  2. Seemed he and Dunbar decided to go against a called run and try to beat a DB who was probably on an island. That’s fine, but the throw was terrible. If he throws to the outside, he at least gives Dunbar a chance.
  3. The play where he ignored the screen to Catalon to lock in on a double-teamed Dunbar was dangerous and the only time he was truly pressured. Got to at least fake the screen if you’re going to Dunbar on that play, but the right play would have been to go to Catalon as he was wide open with 3 blockers in front of him.

Defense:

  • We were still blitzing quite a bit, but Arizona was either running the ball or throwing quick passes. When Dawkins tried to take time, he was pressured
  • There were some issues with the zone coverage, but nothing that would kill them against Arizona. Make those mistakes against Tech or Memphis and :fearful:
  • Oliver looked gassed in the 2nd quarter. I think this was a problem the staff had last year about keeping him to where he wouldn’t wear himself out. I thought Fleming did a good job the few plays he came in for Oliver
  • On Arizona TD, biggest problem was losing contain on the two long runs which really didn’t happen at all the rest of the half. The Pass interference on Johnson on that drive was a good call on a fluke play. Chalk that one up to inexperience on Johnson’s part more than anything
  • For the most part, defense played solidly except for one drive this half. Oliver was a force, K. Williams really plays the slot corner roll well, and Hines and Adams did a good job in the middle. Arizona never tested Winchester or Myres this half, only I.Johnson.

Break over, time to get into the 2nd half

Kickoff - 3Q 15:00
Play: Kickoff to the 2, returned 23 yards, face mask penalty on Davis
Notes: Rosette was the first one down and forced the returner to go left, contain wasn’t there and blockers opened a hole. Penalty was a good call as Davis he yanks it pretty hard.

Defense 1st and 10 from Houston 40 - 3Q 14:52
Subs: I.Johnson/Myres in at CB
Arizona Formation: Shotgun, 1 RB, 3 WR
Play: Pump left, Bootleg right, hit the tight end, Davis makes tackle - 8 yard gain
Houston D: 6 in the box, K. Williams blitzes
Note: Williams gets some pressure and forces an early throw, but Adams bit on the fake early and was 2 steps behind TE.

Defense 2nd and 2 from Houston 48 - 3Q 14:28
Arizona Formation: Shotgun, 1 RB, 3 WR
Play: Read Option, handoff, run between RG/RT, Davis makes tackle - 11 yard gain
Houston D: 6 in the box, T. Williams blitzes
Note: Huge hole as the line is able to block Thurman and Adams easily, K. Williams misses a tackle. Oliver hustles 11 yards down field to ensure Davis brings the back down

Defense 1st and 10 from Houston 41 - 3Q 14:04
Arizona Formation: Shotgun, 1 RB, 4 WR (3 left)
Play: Straight drop, Dawkins scrambles for 12, Oliver forces the fumble, Myres recovers - Houston ball
Houston D: 6 in the box, 4 man rush (DL and Egbule)
Note: Thurman forces Dawkins from the pocket, Hines and Adams both miss tackles, but Oliver again hustles and chases Dawkins down after 12 yards and strips the ball out. Myres is on the spot and falls on it.

Offense 1st and 10 from Houston 29 - 3Q 13:48
Subs: Catalon at RB and Corbin at WR
Play: Straight bubble screen to Bonner - 6 yard gain
Arizona D: 6 in the box, 5 rushing
Notes: Easy pitch and catch. Corbin makes a good block on his guy, but Bonner is unable to shake the 1st tackler

Offense 2nd and 4 from Houston 35 - 3Q 13:28
Play: Read Option, handoff to Catalon who runs left of center - 6 yard gain
Arizona D: 7 in the box, 4 rushing
Notes: Hole doesn’t open early, but Catalon hesitates and hits a hole that opens up behind J.Jones as Jones is shoving his guy 3 yards down field. Arizona player injured.

Offense 1st and 10 from Houston 41 - 3Q 13:19
Sub: Leday in for Corbin
Play: Read Option, handoff to Catalon who runs left and cuts up between J.Jones and B.Jones - 8 yard gain, facemask penalty on Arizona
Arizona D: 7 in the box, 4 rushing
Notes: Line is just manhandling Arizona on this play. Catalon makes a quick cut as soon as he sees the hole and is able to pick up good yardage. Facemask is on they guy that Oliver is blocking, grabs Oliver’s facemask immediately and spins him around to take him out of the play

Offense 1st and 10 from Arizona 36 - 3Q 12:43
Play: Read Option, fake pitch to Leday in motion, handoff to Catalon who runs between LG/LT - 5 yard gain
Arizona D: 7 in the box, 4 rushing
Notes: Josh Jones completely pancakes his guy, Oliver and Brooker both pull and open a huge hole and Catalon again makes one cut and sprints through it. Arizona player injured

Offense 2nd and 5 from Arizona 31 - 3Q 12:07
Sub: Birden in for Catalon
Play: Forward pitch to Leday, run between RG/RT - no gain
Arizona D: 6 in the box, 5 rushing, blitz from the left side
Notes: Oliver falls early and Noble trips over him allowing Noble’s guy to fill the hole and tackle Leday for no gain.

Offense 3rd and 5 from Arizona 31 - 3Q 11:48
Play: Sideline pass to Birden - no gain
Arizona D: 6 in the box, 3 rush
Notes: Diamond formation to the left with Birden behind Brooker, Leday, and Bonner. UH tried to hurry up and catch Arizona sleeping, but it didn’t work and Arizona was all over this play. Blocking was good, but Birden couldn’t make the first guy miss.

Offense 4th and 5 from Arizona 31 - 3Q 11:08
Play: Straight drop, pass to Bonner down the seams - Intercepted
Arizona D: 6 in the box, 4 rush
Notes: Coogs hurry to the line, but the defense recovers quickly; Coogs end up changing the play. Defender commits Illegal Contact on Dunbar an an in-route over the middle, not called. Allen tries to throw into triple coverage to Bonner even though there’s no pressure and is picked. Leday and Brooker were wide open running down the right side and either would have easily scored, but Allen never looked off Bonner. Yes, it’s 4th down and this acts as a punt, but this was a very poor decision and the Coogs could have had 6 if he looks off and goes to Brooker or Leday.

Defense 1st and 10 from Arizona 8 - 3Q 11:00
Subs: No changes from last drive, still Myres/Johnson at CB.
Arizona Formation: Shotgun, 1 RB, 3 WR
Play: Read Option - Dawkins can’t handle the snap - Safety
Houston D: 7 in the box, 4 man rush and Davis/Adams blitzing
Note: Dawkins just takes his eye off the snap and tries to hand it to the RB too quickly. Ball drops and Davis/Thurman both get to the ball/Dawkins as neither were blocked. Davis hits Dawkins off the ball, Matt Adams tries to pick up the ball, but it squirts out of his hands, it ends up bouncing right into an Arizona OL’s gut and he immediately goes down as he’s swarmed by Davis, Thurman, and Hines. Just missed a TD here if Adams picks the ball up clean; one of those plays where if Adams falls on it, they may give him the TD as he was so close to the endzone.

Houston 19, Arizona 10

Kickoff from Arizona 20 - 3Q 10:53
Play: Leday receives it at the 6 - 24 yard return
Notes: Stuard with another nice block to free Leday. Leday runs right over 2 guys before going down.

Offense 1st and 10 from Houston 30 - 3Q 10:46
Subs: Catalon at RB and Leday at WR
Play: Play-Action, swing pass to Leday to the left - 3 yard gain
Arizona D: 6 in the box, 5 rushing
Notes: Dunbar doesn’t get out fast enough to get his block and Leday ends up running into him. Leday’s strength helps him get two more yards as he drags a guy until he’s swarmed by 4 defenders.

Offense 2nd and 7 from Houston 33 - 3Q 10:12
Sub: Corbin in for Leday
Play: Straight Drop, Allen hits Bonner on an out-route - 16 yard gain
Arizona D: 7 in the box, 4 rushing
Notes: Perfect pitch and catch to a wide-open Bonner on the far sideline. Line is keeping Allen clean and he’s got all day. Allen does a good job looking at Brooker running a short route to pull the DB up.

Offense 1st and 10 from Houston 49 - 3Q 9:45
Play: Straight drop, pump fake to Bonner, back shoulder pass to Corbin - Incomplete, Pass Interference penalty on Corbin
Arizona D: 7 in the box, 5 rushing
Notes: Bonner lines up in the backfield with Allen and Catalon, but goes into motion to the left. Allen sees Corbin and throws a back shoulder throw, but throws it a bit too far to the sideline. Penalty on Corbin is ticky-tack. Again, both he and the defender are hand fighting all the way down and Corbin slightly puts his hand on the defender when he turns. Pure home-field call and even the announcer says he doesn’t like the call.

Offense 1st and 25 from Houston 34 - 3Q 9:39
Play: Straight drop, Allen scrambles to the right - 1 yard gain
Arizona D: 6 in the box, 3 rushing
Notes: Arizona drops 8 and the Coogs are too bunched up to get open. Allen has plenty of time and scrambles for a yard. Coogs get lucky that Rodgers isn’t called for a block in the back at the end of the play.

Offense 2nd and 24 from Houston 35 - 3Q 9:18
Play: Option right, pitch to Catalon - 1 yard gain
Arizona D: 6 in the box, 4 rushing
Notes: Option to the short side of the field is an interesting call in this situation. Rodgers doesn’t make his block and this play dies quickly. Catalon’s speed allows him to get 1 yard.

Offense 3rd and 23 from Houston 36 - 3Q 8:54
Play: Screen to Catalon to the left - 5 yard gain
Arizona D: 4 in the box, 4 rushing
Notes: I won’t kill them on this play call as this had a good chance of breaking for big yards…that is, until Brooker pushes his guy directly into Catalon.

Offense 4th and 18 from Houston 41 - 3Q 8:18
Play: Punt - 45 yards, fair catch
Notes: I. Johnson is again in the returner’s face when he catches the ball. Ref spots the ball at the 14 even though he catches it at the 13

Defense 1st and 10 from Arizona 14 - 3Q 8:10
Subs: Johnson and Winchester in at CB
Arizona Formation: Shotgun, 1 RB, 4 WR
Play: Fake pitch left, Dawkins hits WR on quick out, Hines makes tackle - 18 yard gain
Houston D: 6 in the box, 3 man rush and Hines blitzing
Note: Should have been a 3 yard gain, but T. Williams misses the tackles. Hines has to run down field and make the tackle

Defense 1st and 10 from Arizona 32 - 3Q 7:49
Arizona Formation: Shotgun, 1 RB, 4 WR
Play: Play-Action, Dawkins hits the same WR on a stop, T. Williams knocks OB- 14 yard gain
Houston D: 6 in the box, 4 man rush (DL and Egbule)
Note: There may have been some miscommunication here as both Adams and Hines are in the middle of the field and too close to each other. Hines probably should have been further over and would have been closer to the WR and stopped the long run after the catch.

Defense 1st and 10 from Arizona 46 - 3Q 7:20
Arizona Formation: Shotgun, 1 RB, 4 WR
Play: Straight handoff up the middle, Oliver/Adams make tackle - no gain
Houston D: 6 in the box, 3 man rush with Hines on a blitz
Note: Oliver pushes his blocker deep and quickly spins off to grab RB as he’s trying to go through the hole. Adams waiting on the other side of the hole. This was one of those “how does a man that size move that fast” plays by Oliver.

Defense 2nd and 10 from Arizona 46 - 3Q 6:52
Arizona Formation: Shotgun, 1 RB, 4 WR
Play: Straight Drop - Slant, Adams makes the tackle - 8 yard gain
Houston D: 6 in the box, 4 man rush (DL and Egbule)
Note: Game of inches, Egbule almost gets to Dawkins and Adams plays it well and just misses deflecting the ball.

Defense 3rd and 2 from Houston 46 - 3Q 6:28
Arizona Formation: Shotgun, 1 RB, 4 WR
Play: Straight drop, rolls to right and hits WR on sideline - 12 yard gain
Houston D: 5 in the box, Oliver, Chevis, and Egbule rush, Adams blitzes
Note: Dawkins avoids the rush from Adams/Egbule on the left and rolls right before lobbing it over Hines to the WR on the sideline. Coogs get lucky that he turns and steps out of bounds as he had a lot of room to run. Feels like Hines should have stayed with the WR on this play as they had the QB contained and Thurman was basically lost in the middle due to where Hines was.

Defense 1st and 10 from Houston 34 - 3Q 6:04
Subs: Fleming for Oliver
Arizona Formation: Shotgun, 1 RB, 4 WR
Play: Read Option, Dawkins keeps and runs left, Davis makes tackle - 6 yard gain
Houston D: 6 in the box, 4 rush (3 DL and Egbule)
Note: Adams goes for the RB and loses contain to the left. Davis does a good job bringing Dawkins down

Defense 2nd and 4 from Housotn 28 - 3Q 5:29
Play: QB sweep right, Thurman makes tackle - 2 yard loss
Arizona Formation: Shotgun, 1 RB, 4 WR (3 WR right)
Houston D: 6 in the box, 3 rush, K. Williams comes on a blitz
Note: Sweep runs right into K. Williams on the blitz. Dawkins hurdles Williams, but right into Thurman who’s waiting for him when he lands. Coogs had this played perfectly.

Defense 3rd and 6 from Houston 30 - 3Q 4:52
Play: Straight drop - pass to endzone - incomplete
Arizona Formation: Shotgun, 1 RB, 4 WR (3 WR left)
Houston D: 6 in the box, 4 rush (DL and Egbule)
Note: First straight drop for Arizona where the Coogs don’t get any pressure. Dawkins makes a perfect throw to the back of the endzone and I.Johnson saves the day by pulling the ball away as they flip over. Play reviewed and upheld. Good coverage by I.Johnson.

Defense 4th and 6 from Houston 30 - 3Q 4:44
Subs: Oliver/Vaughan in for Fleming/Chevis
Play: Straight drop, Dawkins hits WR in flat, Winchester makes tackle - 13 yard gain
Arizona Formation: Shotgun, 1 RB, 4 WR
Houston D: 6 in the box, 3 rush, Hines Blitzes
Note: Wildcats were able to find a hole in the zone. Adams may have been too far inside and K. Williams may have been too deep.

Defense 1st and 10 from Houston 17 - 3Q 4:22
Play: Read-option, handoff up the middle, Oliver makes tackle - 1 yard loss
Arizona Formation: Shotgun, 1 RB, 3 WR
Houston D: 7 in the box, 4 rush (DL and Egbule) and K.Williams blitzes
Note: Coogs had this scouted pretty well. Oliver makes the tackle, but that’s only due to Adams and then K. Williams letting the runner go in succession.

Defense 2nd and 11 from Houston 18 - 3Q 3:53
Play: Roll right, Dawkins hits WR on the sideline, Davis pushes OB - 10 yard gain
Arizona Formation: Shotgun, 1 RB, 3 WR
Houston D: 7 in the box, 3 rush and K.Williams blitzes
Note: I. Johnson was playing too far off and then misses tackle

Defense 3rd and 1 from Houston 8 - 3Q 3:46
Play: QB sneak, Adams makes tackle - 2 yard gain
Arizona Formation: Under center, 1 RB, 3 WR
Houston D: 6 in the box, 4 rush (DL and Egbule)
Note: Dawkins hurries up and gooses the center. Coogs weren’t completely set.

Defense 1st and Goal from Houston 6 - 3Q 3:21
Play: Read option, handoff straight ahead, tackled by Ed Oliver - 1 yard gain
Arizona Formation: Shotgun, 1 RB, 2 TE, 2 WR
Houston D: 7 in the box, 3 rush, Adams/K.Williams blitz
Note: Ed Oliver blasts his man into the backfield and then stretches around another OL to wrap up the RB. Amazing play by Big Ed.

Defense 2nd and Goal from Houston 5 - 3Q 2:44
Play: QB sweep to left, Oliver/Adams make tackle - 1 yard gain
Arizona Formation: Shotgun, 1 RB, 2 TE, 2 WR
Houston D: 8 in the box, 3 rush
Note: Oliver again! OL can do nothing and is holding on for dear life as Oliver heads straight to the spot Dawkins wants to go. Adams with a big hit to help finish him off. Dawkins is a little shaken up after that one.

Defense 3rd and Goal from Houston 4 - 3Q 1:58
Play: Roll out right, throw to WR at near pylon - incomplete
Arizona Formation: Shotgun, 1 RB, 3 WR
Houston D: 8 in the box, 3 rush and Egbule, Adams, and K. Williams come on a blitz
Note: Coogs come in an all-out blitz and play man for one of the first times all game. I.Johnson loses his WR and Dawkins just throws high. Coogs breathe a sigh of relief. Dawkins shaken up on the sideline after the play from the hit Adams put on him the previous play.

Defense 4th and Goal from Houston 4 - 3Q 1:53
Play: Field Goal, 21 yards - Good

Houston 19, Arizona 13

Kickoff - 3Q 1:48
Play: Touchback

Offense 1st and 10 from Houston 25 - 3Q 1:48
Subs: Birden and Corbin in
Play: Bonner called for a false start
Arizona D: 7 in the box
Notes: Bonner doesn’t have the snap count right and begins to shuffle his feet briefly. Honestly, I’m not sure this should have been called as Bonner isn’t on the line and moves sideways, not forward. He’s allowed to move prior to the snap.

Offense 1st and 15 from Houston 20 - 3Q 1:48
Play: Read Option - Handoff to Birden running left between LG/LT - 9 yard gain
Arizona D: 7 in the box, 4 rush
Notes: Allen freezes the blitzer from the right crashing in. Oliver pulls and creates a hole for Birden who motors for 9 yards. Great blocking by the line.

Offense 2nd and 6 from Houston 29 - 3Q 1:19
Play: Read Option, Handoff Birden running right - 2 yard gain
Arizona D: 7 in the box, 5 rush
Notes: Oliver misses the blitzer coming up the middle. Birden makes 3 guys miss before being brought down for a 2 yard gain. Should have been stopped in the backfield.

Offense 3rd and 4 from Houston 31 - 3Q :43
Play: Straight Drop, Allen hits Dunbar on a quick- in, Dunbar drags defender 3 yards - 7 yard gain
Arizona D: 6 in the box, 4 rush
Notes: Perfect play call to extend the drive and Allen hits Dunbar at the perfect time

Offense 1st and 10 from Houston 38 - 3Q :43
Subs: Leday in for Corbin, Catalon in for Birden
Play: Read Option, Handoff Catalon running straight, cuts right - 4 yard gain
Arizona D: 6 in the box, 4 rush
Notes: Line collapses Arizona DL to the left and Catalon is able to cut right and gain 4 yards to end the quarter. Takes 3 guys to bring Catalon down.

End of the 3rd Quarter

Offense 2nd and 6 from Houston 42 - 4Q 15:00
Play: Pitch forward to Leday - 2 Yard loss
Arizona D: 6 in the box, 5 rush
Notes: Arizona D see Leday coming and reads it well. Oliver or Rodgers misses the blitzer coming in as Oliver goes to double team Noble’s guy and Rodgers tries to move to the 2nd level. Missed assignment on this play.

Offense 3rd and 8 from Houston 40 - 4Q 14:27
Play: Straight Drop, Quick pass to Dunbar on a stop route - 5 yard gain
Arizona D: 6 in the box, 5 rush
Notes: Not really a fan of running a route on 3rd down that requires the WR to stop 3 yards short of the 1st down. Defenders are on Dunbar immediately; had no chance to get the 1st down. Not a timing route so I’m not sure if this is on the play call or if Dunbar just didn’t run the route to where he needed to be.

Offense 4th and 3 from Houston 45 - 4Q 13:48
Play: Punt, 45 yards, fair catch at the 10 yard line
Notes: Isaiah Johnson is again the first one down and in the returner’s face as he catches it. The refs again give Arizona a yard as he caught the ball at the 9.

Taking a break after this one. I’ll finish up the 4th quarter tomorrow night.

Defense 1st and 10 from Arizona 10 - 4Q 13:40
Subs: Johnson and Winchester in at CB, Robinson in for Hines
Arizona Formation: Shotgun, 1 RB, 3 WR
Play: Dawkins rolls right and hits a 5 yard stop route, Johnson makes tackle - 5 yard gain
Houston D: 6 in the box, 3 man rush and T. Williams bitzing
Note: Johnson was playing a bit far off and Arizona takes advantage of it

Defense 2nd and 5 from Arizona 15 - 4Q 13:07
Arizona Formation: Shotgun, 1 RB, 4 WR
Play: Dawkins tries to hit a curl route to the right - incomplete
Houston D: 6 in the box, 3 man rush and Robinson blitzing
Note: Dawkins is not comfortable throwing when you get within 2 yards of him as Thurman pushes his guy almost into Dawkins. Dawkins throw it well high and well behind his WR

Defense 3rd and 5 from Arizona 15 - 4Q 13:00
Arizona Formation: Shotgun, 1 RB, 4 WR
Play: Dawkins drops back and throws a 10 yard crossing pattern - incomplete, knocked down by T. Williams
Houston D: 6 in the box, 3 man rush with Robinson on a delayed blitz
Note: Coogs play press-man here and T. Williams makes a nice play knocking down the pass

Defense 4th and 5 from Arizona 15 - 4Q 12:55
Lineup: #24 Winchester and #85 Leday are the 2 others on the punt return team that I didn’t have before
Play: Punt, 47 yards - 6 yard return by McDowell
Notes: McDowell did a good job getting what he could

Offense 1st and 10 from Houston 44 - 4Q 12:45
Subs: Catalon and Corbin in
Play: Straight drop, Allen throws a 10 yard out to Dunbar - Intercepted
Arizona D: 7 in the box, 5 rush
Notes: Allen stares Dunbar down, Dunbar trips and the defender easily intercepts it. Coverage was tight and it probably wouldn’t have been complete even if Dunbar stands up. Refs give us a yard as the defender got to the Arizona 46, but they spot it at the Arizona 45.

Defense 1st and 10 from Arizona 45 - 4Q 12:37
Subs: Same lineup as last series. Tate replaces Dawkins at QB for Arizona
Arizona Formation: Shotgun, 1 RB, 3 WR
Play: Bootleg right, Tate hits the tight end on the sideline - 4 yard gain
Houston D: 6 in the box, 3 man rush
Note: Thurman is able to get through and get pressure. Looked like some miscommunication between Robinson and T.Williams on who would take the QB and who would stay back in coverage. Williams goes for the QB and Robinson isn’t in position to cover.

Defense 2nd and 6 from Arizona 49 - 4Q 12:16
Arizona Formation: Shotgun, 1 RB, 4 WR
Play: 3 step drop, Tate throws to WR in the flat - incomplete
Houston D: 6 in the box, 3 man rush and Robinson blitzes
Note: Tate tries to lead WR, but WR stops and has to recover to try and catch it. In the end, he just drops it. Adams dropped too far back in coverage leaving the WR open.

Defense 3rd and 6 from Arizona 49 - 4Q 12:10
Arizona Formation: Shotgun, 1 RB, 4 WR
Play: Straight drop, Tate scrambles, Oliver makes the tackle - 10 yard gain
Houston D: 6 in the box, 3 man rush and Robinson blitzes
Note: Oliver forces Tate out of the pocket, but Tate finds a big hole to the left. Tate just runs over Johnson at the first down marker and Oliver finally lands on him 10 yards down field.

Defense 1st and 10 from Houston 41 - 4Q 11:38
Subs: Vaughan/Fleming in for Chevis/Oliver
Arizona Formation: Shotgun, 1 RB, 4 WR (3 to the right)
Play: QB sweep to the left, Davis makes tackle - no gain, penalty, holidng
Houston D: 6 in the box, 3 man rush and K. Williams blitzes
Note: K.Williams would have Tate for a loss, but the RB tackles him as he’s making the tackle for the holding call

Defense 1st and 10 from Arizona 49 - 4Q 11:12
Sub: Hines in for Robinson
Arizona Formation: Shotgun, 1 RB, 4 WR (3 to the right)
Play: Play action, Tate scrambles right and hits WR on the sideline, Winchester makes the tackle - 14 yard gain
Houston D: 6 in the box, 3 man rush (Thurman, Fleming, Egbule), Adams on a blitz
Note: Adams just misses tripping him up as Tate throws. Tate makes a nice throw along the sideline to an open receiver. Winchester had 2 in his zone and Davis wasn’t close enough to the up WR to make a play. Not much the defense could do better here; sometimes the offense just executes better. Tate’s speed and throwing ability are a problem…not sure why he wasn’t the starter.

Defense 2nd and 6 from Houston 37 - 4Q 10:46
Arizona Formation: Shotgun, 1 RB, 4 WR (3 to the left)
Play: Read Option, Handoff off right guard, Hines makes tackle - 5 yard gain
Houston D: 5 in the box, 3 man rush, T. Williams blitzes
Note: Arizona able to open a hole, Hines gets lucky and gets an arm in to trip the RB

Defense 3rd and 1 from Houston 32 - 4Q 10:09
Sub: Oliver in for Fleming, Dawkins back in for Tate at Arizona QB
Arizona Formation: Shotgun, 1 RB, 3 WR
Play: Read Option, handoff off right guard, T.Williams makes tackle - 3 yard gain
Houston D: 6 in the box, 3 man rush
Note: Vaughan goes a bit wide, Oliver is double-teamed and a huge hole opens up

Defense 1st and 10 from Houston 29 - 4Q 9:39
Subs: Tate back in for Dawkins at Arizona QB
Arizona Formation: Shotgun, 1 RB, 3 WR
Play: Read Option, handoff running left, Hines/Oliver make tackle - 1 yard gain
Houston D: 6 in the box, 4 man rush (3 DL and Egbule)
Note: Egbule comes free and has the RB 3 yards deep, but doesn’t wrap up.

Defense 2nd and 9 from Houston 28 - 4Q 9:08
Arizona Formation: Shotgun, 1 RB, 3 WR
Play: QB sweep left, Davis makes tackle - 3 yard gain
Houston D: 6 in the box, 4 man rush (3 DL and Egbule)
Note: K.WIlliams gets juked, but Davis comes out of nowhere to make the tackle

Defense 3rd and 6 from Houston 25 - 4Q 8:43
Subs: Chevis in for Thurman
Arizona Formation: Shotgun, 1 RB, 4 WR
Play: Straight drop, Slant - incomplete
Houston D: 6 in the box, 3 man rush and K.WIlliams blitzes
Note: Coogs get lucky as Tate throws way behind the WR on the slant. Davis was there, but if ball is thrown accurately, it’s a completion

Defense 4th and 6 from Houston 25 - 4Q 8:39
Play: Field Goal, 42 yards, good
Notes: Coog coming off the edge almost gets there

Houston 19, Arizona 16

Kickoff - 4Q 8:32
Play: Touchback

Offense 1st and 10 from Houston 25 - 4Q 8:32
Subs: Birden and Corbin in
Play: Read Option, Handoff Birden running off LT - 6 yard gain
Arizona D: 7 in the box, 5 rush
Notes: B.Jones pulls and makes a nice block to spring Birden. Brooker gets pushed back a little too much on his block, otherwise, Birden runs for more. Birden is shaken up a bit afterwards (may have just hit his funny bone).

Offense 2nd and 4 from Houston 31 - 4Q 8:02
Subs: Catalon in for Birden
Play: Read Option, handoff up the middle, Catalon cuts and runs off RG - 3 yard gain
Arizona D: 6 in the box, 4 rush
Notes: Nice vision by Catalon to cut and find the hole and good blocking by OL. Dunbar whiffs on a block that leads to the tackle

Offense 3rd and 1 from Houston 34 - 4Q 7:45
Play: Quick drop, bubble screen to Bonner - no gain
Arizona D: 7 in the box, 5 rush
Notes: Coogs hurry to the line and the play call is right and throw is good. Bonner decides to cut left and run into the defender that Corbin is blocking instead of going straight ahead for the easy 1st down. Bonner’s got to know the situation there.

Offense 4th and 1 from Houston 34 - 4Q 7:02
Play: Punt formation, False start on Adams/Johnson
Notes: Both players move at the same time so, for the 2nd time tonight, there was miscommunication on the snap count

Offense 4th and 6 from Houston 29 - 4Q 6:59
Play: Punt, 40 yard punt, 2 yard return, Corbin makes tackle
Note: Corbin, in for Johnson on this punt, was the first one down and makes a shoestring tackle immediately

Defense 1st and 10 from Arizona 33 - 4Q 6:50
Subs: WInchester/Johnson at CB
Arizona Formation: Shotgun, 1 RB, 3 WR
Play: Straight drop, quick pass to the TE in the flat, Hines makes the tackle - 11 yard gain
Houston D: 6 in the box, 3 man rush, T. WIlliams blitzes
Note: Hines was too slow reacting and allows the reception

Defense 1st and 10 from Arizona 44 - 4Q 6:31
Arizona Formation: Shotgun, 1 RB, 3 WR
Play: 3 step drop, quick pass to the WR on the right, Winchester makes the tackle - 3 yard gain
Houston D: 6 in the box, 3 man rush, Adams blitzes
Note: Coogs had this read very well, Egbule just misses jumping and tipping the pass and Winchester upends the WR on his way down

Defense 2nd and 7 from Arizona 47 - 4Q 5:52
Arizona Formation: Shotgun, 1 RB, 3 WR
Play: Read Option, handoff up the middle,Thurman makes the tackle - 1 yard gain
Houston D: 6 in the box, 3 man rush, Hines and T. Williams blitz
Note: Thurman comes in unblocked and makes the tackle. Good on him to learn as Arizona had kept leaving the LDE unblocked on these plays, but they kept going too wide. This one, Thurman recognizes the play immediately and directly cuts towards the middle to make the tackle

Defense 3rd and 6 from Arizona 48 - 4Q 5:26
Arizona Formation: Shotgun, 1 RB, 3 WR
Play: Straight drop, Tate scrambles, K. Williams makes the tackle - 7 yard gain
Houston D: 5 in the box, 3 man rush, Hines comes in on a delayed blitz
Note: So, this is one of those plays where Oliver’s hustle gets the best of him. He does a good job of getting the pressure and forcing Tate to scramble, but he shifts right into Hines which takes both out of the play and opens a gaping hole for Tate to run through. Got to maintain gap integrity on some plays and trust your teammates. Guessing Ed was thinking of this play when he said that he still had to work on a lot after the game.

Defense 1st and 10 from Houston 45 - 4Q 5:00
Arizona Formation: Shotgun, 1 RB, 3 WR
Play: Read Option, Tate keeps and runs left - 4 yard gain
Houston D: 7 in the box, 3 man rush, K.WIlliams blitzes
Note: Egbule has him for no gain, but misses the tackle

Defense 2nd and 6 from Houston 41 - 4Q 4:31
Arizona Formation: Shotgun, 1 RB, 3 WR
Play: Straight drop, pass to WR on a 10 yard out, Adams/K.WIlliams make the tackle - 9 yard gain
Houston D: 7 in the box, 4 man rush (3 DL and Egbule) and T. Williams blitzes
Note: Arizona finds the seam in the zone and Tate throws a strike

Defense 1st and 10 from Houston 32 - 4Q 3:57
Arizona Formation: Shotgun, 1 RB, 3 WR
Play: Play-Action, Tate pumps and throws a 12 yard slant - Intercepted by Davis
Houston D: 6 in the box, 3 rush, K. Williams blitzes
Note: And the defense creates chaos as they go man here. K.Williams comes on the blitz, but recognizes that Tate wants to go quick to the sideline so he leaps and blocks Tate’s view. Tate catches the other receiver on a slant, but doesn’t see Davis right behind him. Davis steps in front and makes the pick. Fantastic play from both of those guys that probably saves the game

Offense 1st and 10 from Houston 20 - 4Q 3:49
Subs: Catalon and Leday in
Play: Read Option, fake forward pitch to Leday, handoff Catalon running off LG - 26 yard gain
Arizona D: 6 in the box, 6 rush
Notes: Oliver and Brooker pull and open a huge hole which Catalon bursts through for the long run

Offense 1st and 10 from Houston 46 - 4Q 3:20
Play: Read Option, handoff Catalon running off LT - 2 yard gain
Arizona D: 6 in the box, 5 rush
Notes: Oliver pulls, but whiffs on his block which allows the tackle. Arizona uses a timeout

Offense 2nd and 8 from Houston 48 - 4Q 3:15
Subs: Birden in for Catalon
Play: Read Option, handoff Birden running left of Center - 4 yard gain
Arizona D: 7 in the box, 5 rush
Notes: Nice run, Oliver a little late to get out and make a block on the 2nd level and ends up helping to tackle Birden. Arizona calls timeout

Offense 3rd and 4 from Arizona 48 - 4Q 3:10
Play: Read Option, handoff Birden running left of Center - 4 yard gain
Arizona D: 7 in the box, 6 rush
Notes: The line picks the blitz up well and Birden just misses getting close to the 1st down due to him tripping on Brooker’s foot as he hits the LOS. Bit unlucky here. Arizona uses their final timeout.

Offense 4th and 2 from Arizona 46 - 4Q 3:06
Play: Punt, 46 yards, touchback
Notes: Dane just blasts this one into the back of the endzone. Corbin was the first one down

A nailbiter!

Defense 1st and 10 from Arizona 20 - 4Q 2:59
Subs: WInchester/Johnson at CB, Dawkins back in at QB for Arizona
Arizona Formation: Shotgun, 1 RB, 4 WR
Play: Straight drop, Dawkins tries to needle a pass 20 yards down the seam - incomplete
Houston D: 6 in the box, 3 man rush, K. WIlliams blitzes
Note: Coogs lose the WR down the seam and they’re lucky that Dawkins lobs it short and the WR can make the catch at his ankles. Would have been a huge gain. Pressure was non-existent.

Defense 2st and 10 from Arizona 20 - 4Q 2:54
Arizona Formation: Shotgun, 1 RB, 4 WR
Play: Straight Drop, pass to the right to the RB, K.Williams makes the tackle - 3 yard loss
Houston D: 6 in the box, 3 man rush, Hines blitzes
Note: Williams just eats up the RB here and makes a terrific open field tackle

Defense 3rd and 13 from Arizona 17 - 4Q 2:30
Arizona Formation: Shotgun, 1 RB, 4 WR (3 to the left)
Play: Straight Drop, pass 10 yards downfield to the right sideline - incomplete
Houston D: 6 in the box, 3 man rush, Adams and Hines blitz
Note: Arizona tries to go quick and Houston isn’t ready, but it kind of works as neither is the Arizona OL.
Oliver comes streaking through and levels Dawkins as he throws. Throw goes way over the head of the intended receiver. Surprised Dawkins wasn’t broken in half here.

Defense 4th and 13 from Arizona 17 - 4Q 2:25
Arizona Formation: Shotgun, 1 RB, 4 WR (3 to the left)
Play: Straight drop, Dawkins scrambles, tackled by Adams - 6 yard gain
Houston D: 4 in the box, 4 man rush (3 DL and Egbule)
Note: Thurman gets real close to getting the sack, but Dawkins just escapes. Adams makes sure Dawkins goes down in the open field.

Offense 1st and 10 from Arizona 23 - 4Q 2:16
Subs: Catalon and Leday in
Play: Read Option, handoff Catalon off RG - 3 yard gain
Arizona D: 7 in the box, 4 rush
Notes: Brooker pulls, but does a poor job with his block which forces Catalon back to the right where there’s no hole

Offense 2nd and 7 from Arizona 21 - 4Q 1:32
Play: Read Option, handoff Catalon off right tackle - 6 yard gain
Arizona D: 7 in the box, 5 rush
Notes: Line does a good job up front and Catalon makes a cut to get yardage and eventually has 2 guys bring him down.

Offense 3rd and 1 from Arizona 15 - 4Q :49
Subs: Birden in for Catalon
Play: Read option, handoff Birden running straight - 2 yard gain
Arizona D: 7 in the box, 6 rush
Notes: Trips left, but the give is to Catalon as the line blocks right. Brooker pulls and makes just enough of a hole next to J.Jones and Birden gets 2 yards

Offense 1st and 10 from Arizona 13 - 4Q :22
Subs: Leslie and Catalon in for Leday and Bonner
Play: Kneel down by Allen - 1 yard loss
Arizona D: 10 in the box
Notes: Interesting that this is done in a shotgun and then Allen walks forward 2 yards to kneel down

Final Houston 19, Arizona 16

2nd half thoughts

Offense

  • Other than the two interceptions, thought Allen played very well this half. Of course, those two interceptions both saw him stare down his receiver, once throwing into triple coverage and once throwing to a well covered receiver who fell down
  • We have 2 very good Running backs who don’t make mistakes.
  • The Offensive Line did a great job in pass protection as Allen wasn’t pressured the entire half and only twice the whole game, one was because of Allen. Run blocking was hit and miss as we could have had a lot more yards on the ground if blocks were made. Need to see a lot of improvement there.
  • The receivers were very disappointing in the 2nd half. Blocking was mediocre and twice the receivers caused drives to die (Dunbar runs a 5 yard route when he needs 8 and Bonner doesn’t take a 1st down and runs into a tackler).
  • Play calling got a lot of complaints, but I didn’t see too many bad play calls. With the receivers not playing well and Allen locking onto receivers for anything 10 yards down field, I understood why they called more runs in the 4th quarter. Run blocking has to get better for them to be able to do that.
  • I won’t kill the refs, but those offensive pass interference penalties were crap and hurt the Coogs quite a bit both times.

Defense

  • Ed Oliver is amazing, duh.
  • Khalil Williams was probably my co-player of the game with Oliver. His impact won’t show up in the stats, but he’s a smart player who made some incredible reads. The 2nd interception happened because of his read and leap which forced Tate to go to a different receiver. He also forced a number of plays to turn back inside with blitzes off the edge and he made a couple of fantastic open field tackles.
  • Others that impressed were Davis, Thurman, and Winchester
  • LB play was very hit and miss. Adams did a good job, mostly in coverage and the others did a good job of containment, but they missed a few tackles and coverage by Hines, Robinson, and Egbule was an adventure at times. Egbule did a good job rushing, but he’s got to make tackles when he gets there. As everyone has said,we’ll get eaten alive by the better passing offenses if these guys don’t get better.
  • Corners and safeties played well and were mostly in the right place. Johnson did lose the guy in the endzone on the overthrow, but that was the only glaring mistake. Good tacklers, too. Arizona only went at Winchester once and didn’t go at Myres at all.
  • One guy that really didn’t make an impact was Chevis. Usually was blocked out of the play and seemed slow.
  • As far as blitzing and showing different looks, we definitely continued doing that as we were blitzing almost every play from different places on the field.
