Preview: Houston at USF this Weekend (W 7-3)

Looks like Ullom is the Friday starter going forward. Admin accidentally reported Cumbie starting tonight, but Whitting said the plan was for Ullom all along.

As long as Cumbie is okay, I’m fine with it. I’m sure Whitting has a reason.

Looks like ECU has finally turned it around. Glad we played them early.

It was only a matter of time with ECU. Way too much talent on that team for them to be that bad.

It would be really something if they came back and won the AAC tournament, and we got 5 or 6 teams in.

I’m hoping for at least 4. Ridiculous if the conference can’t get that many.

Bottom 7th
Groundout to P and a homer…Coogs lead 7-3
Foulout to right and K#1 end the inning

T8…UH leads 7-3

We can’t keep loading the bases and coming up empty in this conference, much less in this league if we want to compete!

Wong lines out to right

Houston notched its 21st game this season with 10 or more hits, led by three home runs and five extra base hits. Joe Davis led the way with a two-hit night, which was highlighted by a two-run home run. Connor Wong led off the game with a home run for his ninth of the year and Corey Julks belted his third home run.

Also notching a two-hit night was junior Jake Scheiner and freshman Jared Triolo, while freshman Lael Lockhart Jr. also tallied an RBI.

Pitching Breakdown:
(W) Mitch Ullom | 8.0 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 1 K
Aaron Fletcher | 1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K

Houston starter Mitch Ullom was stellar, improving to 6-3 on the year with the win, after surrendering just two earned runs on six hits with two walks and a strikeout in 8.0 innings of work.

Ullom managed to retire the first six hitters he faced to set the tone and allow the offense to work behind him.

Sophomore Aaron Fletcher relieved Ullom in the ninth, allowing just one walk, while fanning the final hitter of the game.

Maybe these guys will rank us now:

Houston’s Mitch Ullom probably threw 80-85% fastballs that had some sink and induced 13 ground ball outs, including two double plays. Houston now has 37 home runs on the season with 19 coming in American Athletic Conference play. I have covered Houston teams that have won more games, but this one seems more balanced than the ones in the past. A tough non-conference schedule has prepared them well for conference games.
