Sophomore Lael Lockhart Jr. made his first career start and held Rice hitless in 3.0 shutout innings of work. He allowed five walks and struck out three.
Classmate Fred Villarreal took over in the fourth and went 3.1 shutout frames to help preserve the 0-0 game. He allowed just two hits and two walks with one strikeout.
Sophomore Carter Henry relieved Villarreal in the seventh and worked around an inherited jam to strand bases loaded and send the Cougars back to back in a scoreless game.
Henry went on to toss 2.2 shutout innings without allowing a hit, a run and a walk with three strikeouts to improve to 3-0 on the year. The righty hasn’t allowed a run in his last four appearances.

I will take a one run win over Rice or anyone else this year. This still makes too many mistakes, especially on the base paths, but they fight and scrap and have somehow won 20 games! Go Coogs…
