First indoor meet of the year.
Lattin wins the 60M hurdles! Naomi Taylor wins it for the Coogs on the women’s side too.
Mario Burke wins the 60m
UH takes 3rd in the men’s 4x400…as well as 5th, 8th and 9th! I don’t know too much about college T&F, but I’m amazed that we could field FOUR 4x400 relay teams! I assume Coach isn’t too worried about fielding his single best team on opening weekend, but feeling out who will comprise his 4x400 team come postseason.

The depth of our recruiting this year amazes me. I don’t know enough about t&f recruiting to expound how we have so many quality newcomers, but I love it! Just wait until the outdoor season!
The reason is Carl Lewis.
No question CL is the driving force and doing unbelievable job. I was referring to the number and/or types of scholarships available. Does T&F work like baseball and they give partials? The sheer number of quality commitments has me wondering how they divvy up the pie.
If it were me, I would pay my own way for a chance to train with Carl Lewis and Leroy Burrell.
It’s partial, like baseball. Men are allowed to give 12.6 scholarships per season, women can give 18. Figure with financial aid and academic scholarships, some might be covered more than others. Tough to manage, but having the prospect of being able to go pro afterwards accounts for the incoming talent.
The Houston Cougar Men’s and Women’s Track & Field teams opened the 2018-19 indoor season at the Texas A&M Reveille Invitational on Saturday in College Station, Texas.
Houston opened strong on the track, sweeping each of the men’s and women’s 60-meter hurdle competitions to open the season. Senior Amere Lattin raced over the straight-track hurdles in 7.82 to win for the men, while sophomore Naomi Taylor took the women’s race in 8.33. Sophomore Quivell Jordan finished third for the men at 8.16.
With the hurdles off the track, Houston picked up three more podium finishes on the straight track in the men’s and women’s 60-meter dash. Senior Mario Burke kicked off his season with a victory in 6.75, while sophomore Nicholas Alexander took fourth (third among collegiates) in 6.84. For the women, sophomore Ariele Adams placed third in 7.64, while Samiyah Samuels finished right on her heels in fourth at 7.66.
Junior thrower Mikaila Martin picked up a victory by default in the women’s weight throw. As the only competitor, Martin threw the weight 54-2.0 (16.51m), however the performance was significant as her first competition since a season-ending injury a year ago.
The Cougars picked up their final field victory from Felipe Valencia in the men’s shot put. The senior began his season with a top mark of 60-2.5 (18.35m) to stand atop the podium. Freshmen Triston Gibbons (56-2.5; 17.13m) and David Perry (49-9.0; 15.16m) finished third and fourth, respectively.
Houston racked up a pair of podiums in the middle-distance races as well. Aaron Hurd ran the mile in 4:20.06 to take third, while freshman Christian Gilmore ran 2:29.95 in the 1,000-meter run to take second. Zion Smith finished just off the podium in the 1K, taking fourth in 2:33.28.
In the high jump, Houston saw podium finishes on each of the men’s and women’s sides. Senior Collin George matched a personal-best with a clearance of 6-10.25 (2.09m), tying for the top mark of the day but finishing second on the men’s side after a later clearance. For the women, Reagan Luce made her Houston debut with a mark of 5-1.75 (1.57m) to place third.
Freshman Kenneth Pree tabbed Houston’s final field podium of the day, finishing third in the men’s long jump with a mark of 22-1.0 (6.73m).
The Cougars wrapped up the season-opener on the track, where the men’s 4x400-meter relay squad of Amere Lattin, Quivell Jordan, Naaman Outing and Mario Burke ran 3:11.86 to place third.
