Should be a great game, with both teams right on the fringes of the top 25. Can’t wait.

Coogs up 16-15 after 1. Started slow, but came on strong as the period went along.

30-29 Coogs at the half as they again close strong. Impressive opening half to the season. Hopefully, they can maintain it.

Coogs having trouble in the post and fall behind by 10 after 3; 56-46.

They made some big comebacks last year in this situation.

Coogs hanging in there. 73-66 with 2:52 to go. Need a run.

Huge technical foul on the Cal coach during the break, and Coogs within 5.

Coogs within 3 after they really turn up the pressure. 1:56 left, Cal ball

78-74 Cal with 43 seconds left, Cal ball.

Coogs steal the ball and Jazz Harris is fouled on a 3. 11 seconds left.

Harris makes all 3. 78-77 Cal, their ball.

Coogs foul with 10.3 seconds left.

Makes both. Cal by 3, UH ball.

Oh man, Jazz Harris just misses a 3. They get the tip-in, but fall 80-79.

Some questionsble officiating calls went against the Coogs, but valiant effort against a ranked team on the road.

NEWS AND NOTES

* Houston picked up with where they left off a year ago, forcing Cal to turn the ball over 21 times in the contest.
* The Cougars played great perimeter defense in the contest, holding the Bears to 2-of-16 (12.5 percent) from beyond the arc.
* With 17 points in the contest, junior guard Jasmyne Harris now has 977 in her career as she inches closer to becoming Houston’s 24th 1,000-point scorer in program history.
* Despite Kristine Anigwe’s big night, Houston outscored the bears 46-38 on points in the paint.
* Houston’s bench also outscored Cal, 34-16.
* Freshmen Dymond Gladney and Tatyana Hill, as well as junior Doris Jones and sophomore Alyssa Okoene, made their Houston debuts on Tuesday. The newcomers contributed 16 points and six boards in the effort.

Basically came down to Coogs making less than 25% of their 3’s (5-21) for a team that shot 34% from 3 last year and Cal having a huge advantage from the free throw line (26-31 compared to 14-18 for the Coogs). Cal shot 19 free throws in the 2nd half which turned the tide of the game.

Pretty good turnout for the Coogs.

Tough road loss against a ranked opponent. Doesn’t sound like CH was exactly enamored with the officiating.

Probably the biggest officiating blunder was a foul being called on the floor against Jazz Harris in the 4th. They went to review the call to see if it was a flagrant, determined it wasn’t, and then gave the Cal player 2 shots even though they weren’t in the bonus…she made both…Coogs lost by 1.

But there were others as they completely changed how they were calling the game from the first half to the 2nd half. A little bit of homecooking.

I was encouraged by this one, even though the officiating was super maddening down the stretch. Like giving that Cal player free throws on a non-flagrant and non-shooting foul, that’ll stick in my craw for a bit. But, we went to a top 25-caliber team and played them tough to the buzzer. This wasn’t something we really did last year, as improved as we were (certainly not prior to that).

The Coogs got 34 points from their bench players, which is way different from last year when Octavia Barnes was basically the only regular bench scoring threat. This is also a deeper team, 11 players saw action last night and maybe 7 did on average last year. Okoene is promising in the low post, but is obviously rusty from sitting out last year. Tatyana Hill having 3 offensive rebounds and 6 points in her first collegiate game is promising.

Obviously though, this team relies on Jazz Harris and us missing her late 3rd/early 4th quarters due to foul trouble was the difference here. Still very, very excited.
