T&F NCAA Championships Thread (Coogs are national champs in the 4x100, Burrell wins 100, Hall is runner-up in 100, Team finished 3rd overall which matches best finish ever)

Can somebody explain what happened with Mechler? Did he get hurt or just drop out because he didn’t get a jump in? That article makes it seem like he just couldn’t score so dropped out of the whole competition.

It says he is scheduled for this morning also for the decathon so I am not sure either.

My guess is that he knew he was too far behind to have a chance at scoring after failing the high jump. Jared Kerr, who’s also Canadian, has been tweeting about an upcoming meet for Canadian athletes which may be for World Championship qualifying. Guessing Mechler didn’t want to risk injury and miss that so he dropped out.

So, no Coogs advance to the finals. Good news, those 3 girls are only sophomores. Program is getting better.

Georgia gets 2nd and 3rd in the men’s decathlon. Pretty good result for them and they’ll have a big lead with 4 athletes to go going into the final day.

So what are Houston’s chances of winning the national title ?

My predictions:

4x100: 1st place (10 points)
3k steeplechase: Barraza - 3rd place (6 points)
100 meters: Burrell - 1st (10), Hall - 3rd (6), Burke - 5th (4)
400 meters: Montgomery - 4th (5)
4x400: 1st (10)

Total points: 51

The key to us having a chance at the team title is winning the relays. Or at least beating Florida. We just need to go win some races but without Lattin in either of the hurdle finals (or Kerr not even making nationals with a season best which would have been 2nd), it is going to be tough.

We have a chance. Need Florida and Georgia to falter a bit, but, if our guys perform, we’re right there.

@FortWorthCoog, I agree with your predictions. If any of our guys can outperform those predictions, we may be very happy.

I must be missing something, who are the 4 that Georgia have left? I know they have the favorite in the 200 and a high jumper who will probably pick up points.

They have 1 in the 100, 1 in the 200, and 2 high jumpers.

Thing is, they’re in the lead right now with 34 points on the board already.

Anything over 50 would be very solid.

Thanks, my eyes must be bad! lol.

Oh, definitely. We haven’t scored that many points in a long time. Would also mean we’ve got some individual champions which is fantastic.

And this isn’t a one year thing. We lose Burrell, Hall, and Barraza, but almost everyone else is coming back next year…and we have an incredible class coming in that starts to encompass even more events. Plus, the next two years will be up the road in Austin where our guys will be used to the heat and humidity. This is becoming THE premier program in college sports.

Can’t wait to see how the Coogs do these next coming years, including today. Hoping we come away with some championships and the women’s team improves to the men’s level.

I agree and it’s awesome to see how far UH has come. UH athletics is light years ahead compared to 5 years ago. Hoping to see us achieve more and more.

Raining in Eugene. Could make things interesting, especially in the relays.
