A trip to the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships will be on the line in Austin. Each running event under 3,000-meters will be divided into first round and quarterfinal sections with the top-12 athletes after the quarterfinal rounds advancing to Eugene, Ore., on June 7-10. Each field event will consist of a 3-attempt first round to determine the top-12 to advance.

Amere Lattin began the running events for the Cougars in his first of two events at the NCAA West Regional. Competing in heat two of the men’s 400-meter hurdles, Lattin finished in 51.16 to place second in the heat and gain an automatic qualifying berth into the quarterfinal. Lattin’s mark qualified him sixth overall for Friday’s race, where he will also run the first round of the 110-meter hurdles.

Freshman Brianne Bethel became the second Cougar to reach the quarterfinal rounds after running the 100-meter dash. Competing in heat six, Bethel crossed the line in 11.28 to finish fourth in her heat and book her spot on time with the 15th fastest mark in the first round. Bethel will also run in the first round of the 200-meter dash on Friday.

The Cougar men followed with an impressive feat by advancing all four student-athletes in the men’s 100-meter dash to Friday’s quarterfinals. Junior Cameron Burrell set the tone and grabbed the No. 1 overall qualifying time in heat one after running 9.90 (+4.5). Sophomore Mario Burke also picked up an auto-qualifying spot after finishing third in heat two in 10.14.

Despite finishing fourth in heat three, junior Eli Hall was able to pick up a quarterfinal berth by qualifying on time with the 15th fastest mark of the first round in 10.15. Sophomore John Lewis III tallied Houston’s last automatic bid of the competition with a third place finish in heat five after running 10.24.

Senior Tori Williams finished 39th in the women’s 100 after running 11.58 in heat four.

The Cougars had a trio of field event athletes in action during the first day of the regional. Sophomores Taylor Scaife and Mikaila Martin opened competition in the women’s hammer throw. Scaife’s top mark traveled 182-2 (55.52m) to place her 38th, while Martin threw 175-0 (53.35m) to place 45th. In the men’s long jump, junior Antwan Dickerson’s third attempt went 25-0.75 (7.64m) to place him 15th.

Bittersweet day for the Coogs as they had 3 qualify for Eugene, but Eli Hall had an injury and was forced to withdraw. Hall had been the top overall qualifier for the 200M and the top Coog in the 100M this season.

Still, Cam Burrell looks to be healthy for the first time this year as he ran 2 sub 10 second 100s and Mario Burke will join him there. Also, Amere Lattin qualified for the 400M Hurdles where he just missed making it last year; Lattin will also have a chance to qualify for the 110M Hurdles this weekend.

Tough break for Hall…he was really running well! Unfortunately impacts team as well, lots of potential points lost in relays and 200.

Hopefully nothing real serious and will be back even faster next year!

I guess he tweaked something in the 100 The day before, but he was ruled out yesterday morning. Really does hurt us across the board as he was looking great. Would have loved to see him against Coleman of Tennessee.

Let me know if you hear anything else. Is it possible if the injury isn’t that bad that he could still run at the championships on the 4x100 team?

I believe they can use him there if they make it. They’ve got 2 weeks off between now and then. Just don’t know the extent of the injury.

Ok thanks, that’s what I thought he would be eligible. I guess we will see. I really want us to win that 4x100 title, it would be huge.

Not bad. Hopefully the Coogs will represent well in a couple of weeks
