The Houston Cougar Women’s Tennis team cruised to a 7-0 victory over Southern at Barbara Wallace Winston Tennis Facility. The Cougars dropped just one set in their first sweep of the spring season.

Starting with doubles, Lauren Alter and Alison Mills rolled to a 6-1 win over Nicki Neal and Rufaro Chirewa. With the victory, Alter and Mills improve to 3-1 on the season when playing together.

Tsveta Dimitrova and Sveva Mazzari followed shortly after with a 6-1 win as well. The victory gave Houston the doubles point and put Dimitrova and Mazzari at 4-0 on the season in doubles.

Constandena Nicolaou and Ana Glumac’s match was cut short due to the doubles point being won by Houston, with the team leading 4-2 when the match was called.

The Cougars continued their winning ways by sweeping each of the six singles matches. Mills started the Cougars off with a 6-0, 6-0 rout in what proved to be one of her best matches on the season.

Next, Dimitrova won 6-0, 6-1 over Stephanie Mbaya. Dimitrova improved to 5-0 in singles, while playing at the No. 1 position and has only lost one set this season.

Alter kept the momentum going with a 6-3, 6-1 victory. With the win Alter clinched the overall match for Houston and progressed to 5-0 in singles this year.

Another undefeated singles player, Mazzari, won her match 6-2, 6-1 over Rufaro Chirewa. Her first serves and ability to extend rallies propelled her to the straight-set win.

Nicolaou surged to a 6-3, 6-3 win and picked up her fifth singles win this season. Despite starting out the match slow, Nicolaou found her rhythm and never looked back.

In what proved to be the match of the day, Laura Bernardos outlasted her opponent, winning 4-6, 6-1, 10-2. This win sealed the Cougars’ first sweep of the season.
