After a long semester of hard work, the Cougars earned the third seed in the conference tournament, finishing with a winning record of 14-6 in the regular season. Houston remains undefeated in conference play, defeating Wichita State, UConn, and the #2 seed of the tournament, USF.
ABOUT THE MUSTANGS SMU will step foot on court in Orlando with a 10-11 record this season, defeating Tulane last, 4-2, in Round of 16. The Mustangs are lead by #121 ranked Vivienne Kulicke in singles, while Karina Traxler and Tiffany Hollebeck take on Flight 1 in doubles play.
So, the strange thing is that the Coogs did face SMU this season, but it wasn’t counted in the standings? Not sure what’s going on with that match. Took place March 9th and SMU won 4-3.
And the Coogs are out quickly. Probably the end of their season, but, I’d have to say, it was a pretty decent 1st year for a new coach and all new players. Looking forward to what this team can bring in the future.
In doubles, junior Phonexay Chitdara and freshman Jovana Vukovic took on Court 3, where the pair battles but lost the first match of the day, 6-1. The next match won by the Mustangs came at Flight 1, where Karina Traxler and Tiffany Hollebeck downed junior Mimi Kendall-Woseley and freshman Elena Tairyan, 6-1.
The lone win in singles came from Chitdara, who defeated Sarai Monarrez in two sets at Court 5, 6-4, 6-4. Kendall-Woseley fell to #121 Vivienne Kulicke at Flight 1, putting the Mustangs in a 2-1 lead. The Cougars trailed at both Courts 3 and 4, eventually losing to clinch the match for the Mustangs.
The team, led by Head Coach Helena Besovic, ended with 14 regular season wins. The new head coach enjoyed a 3-0 conference record during her first regular season.
