Tennis Kicks Off Spring with Texas A&M (L 7-0), Lamar (W 6-1)

Texas A&M has yet to drop a set in its 2019 spring season matches, beating Utah and Grand Canyon at California. Freshman Jayci Goldsmith holds a 9-2 record in singles play at Flight 1 for the Aggies. The Texas native has paired up with sophomore Tatiana Makarova to hold a 4-1 record in doubles play.

Lamar will start their spring season against Rice on Friday before facing the Cougars. The Cardinals were able to take home two singles titles that came from juniors Jasmin Buchta and Bianca Vitale.

Coogs won a set today.

The University of Houston Tennis team fell to Texas A&M, 7-0, on Saturday afternoon at Mitchell Tennis Center.

_The Cougars dropped the doubles point on Courts 1 and 3, while the Belgian duo, Sophie Gerits and Phonexay Chitdara, were not able to finish their match due to the Aggies’ clinch in Flight 1. _

In singles play, Gerits went on to battle a long three set match, eventually falling in the third set to Tatiana Makarova on Court 3. On the neighboring court, sophomore Ndindi Ndunda played a hard-fought match at Flight 1, dropping a tight, 7-5 set to A&M’s Jayci Goldsmith before falling 6-2 in the second set.

In her Houston debut, Mimi Kendall-Woseley stepped on the court at Flight 2, facing Katya Townsend. The native of Boca Raton, Fla., fell short in a tough 6-4, 6-2 loss. Freshmen Elena Tairyan and Stephanie Belovukovic battled but fell against the Aggies at Flights 5 and 6.

The Cougars return to action on Sunday. Houston will face Lamar, who fell against Rice in their season opener, at 2 p.m. at Winston Tennis Facility.

“I’m very happy to get our first win of the season,” said Head Coach Helena Besovic. “We’ve been working hard to start competing. Overall, we stayed very focused. We’re coming out on the court and feeling more confident. That’s our goal. Being patient and working every match at a time.”

To open the match, Phonexay Chitdara and Sophie Gerits rolled through their match on Court 2, securing the match 6-0. Minutes after, Stephanie Belovukovic and Elena Tairyan won 6-2 to clinch the doubles point.

In singles play, Belovukovic was the first to step off the court with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Laura Sola. Sophomore Ndindi Ndunda followed the winning streak for the team, topping Jasmin Buchta, 6-2, 6-3.

Trailing Amelie Vossgaetter, junior Chitdara managed to come back and win the first set on Court 4, 7-5. The Belgian then sealed the second set 6-1 to clinch the match for the Cougars.

Next, freshman Sophie Gerits battled through her match at Flight 3, winning 6-4, 6-2. Teammate Elena Tairyan won in a hard-fought match, 7-5, 6-3.

Junior Mimi Kendall-Woseley faced Bianca Vitale on Court 2, where the Boca Raton native played a long match, eventually falling in a tough tiebreak in the second set.
