Tennis Looks to Continue Win Streak vs FGCU on Friday at 1pm (L 4-3)

Florida Gulf Coast comes into Houston on Friday with a 3-3 record, falling to #20 ranked Florida State in their last match, 4-0. The Eagles have also played South Florida and #17 Miami this season. Junior Maja Ornberg leads the team at Flight 1, boasting a 12-1 singles record last season. This season, she carries a 3-3 singles record, and 4-2 in doubles at Flight 1.

In doubles, Sophie Gerits and Phonexay Chitdara defended their undefeated streak of the season, giving the Cougars the first win of the day at Court 2. The Belgian duo played Madison Gallegos and Sofia Perez in a tiebreaker, winning 7-6. However, the Eagles were able to win at Flights 1 and 3, stealing the first point of the match.

The Eagles got the early start in singles, snatching the first two matches against Ndindi Ndunda and Gerits at Courts 1 and 3. Minutes later, Chitdara grinded out her match, downing Laura Falceto 6-2, 6-3 at Flight 5. After this match, the junior improved to a 6-1 record in singles.

On Court 6, Stephanie Belovukovic defeated Madison Gallegos 6-2, 6-3. The freshman from Australia has been a steady anchor for the Cougars, holding a 7-1 singles record this season.

After Belovukovic was finished, the two matches left were at Courts 2 and 4, where Mimi Kendall-Woseley and Jovana Vukovicplayed two three-set singles matches. Kendall-Woseley gave the Cougars the point to tie the match at 3-3 with an exciting win, making a comeback in big fashion.

Vukovic played Sofia Perez for the decisive match at Flight 4, rallying but eventually dropping the hard-fought match, 7-6, 4-6, 1-6.
