At some point the rest have to step up.
It would be a VERY smart idea for the UH Athletics Department to fire up the old Heisman marketing machine for Ed Oliver this summer and into the 2018 campaign.
The effort would not only help Ed (who deserves the PR), but also for the UH Football Program and its recruiting efforts to sign the next Ed Oliver. Success begets success.
My two cents.
Go COOGS!
Iām all for this and we should market the living daylights out of Big Ed. It will be great exposure for the school and should help with recruiting for sure. But letās be honest, there is zero chance Ed, or any defensive lineman is ever going to win the Heisman. Itās just not a sparkly enough position and America as a whole cares way too much about offense to give the award to an interior defensive lineman. Honestly, I think the best we can hope for in terms of final results is a top 5 finish. After a brief online search, I see that Ndamukong Suh was the last DT to finsh in the top 5 at #4 in 2009. The last finalist before that was Warren Sapp in 1994, who finished 6th. Ed can dominate all day long, but it wonāt end with a Heisman. Maybe another Outland or a much deserved Nagurski this time around.
The marketing idea has been sent by one our looooong time Coogs on this board to the right people.
In regards to winning the Heisman, itās not about winning that particular trophy itās about selling the awesomeness of our player and the football program that recruited him, coached him and helped make him the defensive monster he is today, top 5 NFL draft choice. Get Ed into the conversation, keep seeing those UH highlights on ESPN and seeing his face and āHoustonā underneath his picture pop up online, twitter and other media outlets.
Marketing for the top collegiate trophy can only help Ed when it comes to the other defensive -specific awards and also help the future recruitment of talented defensive front men to UH. Players that play at UH are seen nationally, compete for the highest awards and can get drafted by the NFL. Sells itself.
Win/Win
Agreed.

Query: Given the Lombardi Awardās new orientation, is it still considered a āmajorā college football award, on par with the Heisman, Outland, etc?
Iām assuming that the answer is āyes,ā but Iām just asking.
It would be great to see Ed become UHās second Lombardi winner!
It is still one of the more prestigious college awards.
They ruined this award IMO. It was the most prestigious lineman award and now it is one of several POY awards all of which are lower tier vs the Heisman.

Anyone else hold their breath during that ice sliding video?
NO KIDDING!!! Last thing we need is for him to get hurt over something like that.
āHello, CMA, Iād like to report a crimeā
I think the ice and concrete may need to make a report that they were assualted by Big Ed. That was an ugly collision and Iām not sure who won.
ā3. Ed Oliver, DL, Houston: Large adult son dominance. Thatās about the only way to describe Oliver as he enters his third, and likely final, year of college. Oliver was the best run stopper among defensive tackles according to PFF and he wasnāt too shabby in pass rush situations with 17 hurries and 27 total pressures. The Outland Trophy winner is such a mismatch that he demands constant attention and double teams ā and oftentimes thatās still a fruitless effort. Heās the most talented interior defensive player in the nation.ā
Was that Ed? that was hilarious lol Im sure the ice is fine guys no need to tell CMA
Opening it up to all positions just lowers it a notch or two, itās not as prestigious now, IMO.
