The "Ed Oliver All Day Every Day" thread

Maybe the most unique accolade I’ve seen for Oliver was in the Pro Football Focus Foundation Draft, in which 32 PFF writers conduct a draft as if the NFL were starting all over again from today forward and teams were drafting from the current group of players walking the planet. The first fifteen picks were quarterbacks, and eventually Watt went 19th and Clowney went 21st. With the 30th selection in that draft, just after All-Pro cornerback Patrick Peterson, Cam Mellor took Ed Oliver.

1. Ed Oliver, Houston
As a true freshman, Oliver was a dominant presence in the middle of the Houston defensive line with 22 tackles for loss and 5 sacks. The sack total could have easily been closer to nine if he had done a better job of finishing would-be sacks. Oliver still has growing to do. He has to get stronger in order to improve how he handles downhill rushing attacks. With that said, he’s cat quick off the snap and an absolute gap monster who was able to disrupt rushing attacks throughout the season. With the athletic ability of a big defensive end and rare pursuit speed, Oliver’s sophomore season will likely leave NFL scouts salivating.

Oliver is the most talented player in the state on either side of the ball. We’ll hear your arguments for others, but we feel pretty confident in our stance. He’s a beast, he flies to the football, and his presence alone forces offensive coordinators to shape their game plan around him. Oliver explodes off the ball and makes a living in the backfield. Even when he’s not able to get to the quarterback, he has quick hands and finished with nine pass deflections. His athleticism creates myriad problems for interior linemen.

1. Ed Oliver, DT, Houston. Rarely can a strong argument be made for a Group of Five player being the best in college football. There are several worthy candidates for the honor, but there’s no doubt that Oliver makes a compelling argument. A five-star recruit who chose to play for his hometown Cougars, Oliver made an immediate impact as a true freshman, looking like the best player on the field in Houston’s Week 1 win over Oklahoma last September. He played all over the Houston line that game and had two sacks, and he didn’t let up the rest of the year: He had 66 tackles, 22 ½ tackles for loss, nine pass breakups, three forced fumbles and two sacks for a defense that ranked 13th in yards per play. Oliver shined in Houston’s most high-profile games, too, adding a dominant performance against Louisville to the big night against Oklahoma. He was a freshman who looked nothing like a freshman, a Group of Five player who looks like he should be starting in the NFL right now.

Houston sophomore defensive tackle Ed Oliver appeared on a fifth preseason watch list for a national award as the Walter Camp Football Foundation announced its watch list for the Walter Camp Player of the Year award on Friday.

The Houston native has also appeared on preseason watch lists for the Bednarik Award (best defensive player), Maxwell Award (best player), Bronko Nagurski Award (best defensive player) and the Outland Award (best lineman).

Oliver was also named the nation’s top defensive player entering the 2017 season by Sports Illustrated.

Great article:

Major Applewhite, who was promoted to head coach after Herman left for Austin, uses Oliver’s example every chance he gets. “You want to keep building your story right here,” Applewhite says. “To me, that’s the thing.” Part of Applewhite’s pitch is that even NFL-bound players ultimately may want to build a post-football life in their hometown. Why not begin making connections in college that could pay dividends 15 years later? “You’re going to move back to Houston,” Applewhite says. “You’re not going to go back to Lincoln and set up shop there.”

This is the key when the team is successful this season. Beat this into the heads of all the aunts, uncles, grandparents, cousins, parents, and anyone else who will listen that can influence these young men’s lives. One day your football life will be over, be prepared for when that happens to be successful in that life. You have to prepare and put in the hard work, just as you would for football. Make connections now, that will pay dividends in the future!

Ed Oliver
Houston
Sophomore | Defensive Tackle

Oliver was arguably the top true freshman defender in the country in 2016, earning first-team All-American honors while racking up 47 solo tackles, second-most of any defensive lineman.

What does Oliver plan for an encore? During the spring, the 6-2, 290-pounder set lofty goals in the “30 tackles for loss region … probably 60-70 tackles and 10 sacks.”

“He’s never satisfied,” junior safety Garrett Davis said. “He wants more out of himself.”

Maybe more importantly to UH coaches, Oliver said he continues to soak up knowledge.

“Every year, the game gets slower and slower to me,” he said. “I’m able to see a lot more during the plays. It just comes with experience, you get better.”

To make it even tougher to prepare for Oliver, the Cougars plan to move him around him the line this season, including as a pass rusher off the edge. While offensive coordinator at Texas, first-year UH coach Major Applewhite got a firsthand look at how that strategy can work with how Ndamukong Suh (Nebraska), Gerald McCoy (Oklahoma) and Lamarr Houston (Texas) were used.

“It’s a little bit harder to put your head around where he might be each snap based on down and distance,” Applewhite said. “We’re going to move him around more this year.”
