Who is better than Ed?
Ed Oliver, DT, Houston
This is not an obligatory mention of a defensive player, nor is it an obligatory mention of a Group of Five player. Oliver might be the nationâs best player next season. This yearâs Outland Trophy winner could find himself fighting another defensive tackleâ340-pound Clemson gap-stuffer Dexter Lawrenceâfor the top spot in the 2019 NFL draft.
To compare to First Team
Hercules Mataâafa, junior, Washington State;
The Cougarsâ junior pass rushing extraordinary from Lahaina, Hawaii finished the regular season as the Pac-12 leader in sacks (9.5) and tackles for loss (21.5)
Maurice Hurst, senior, Michigan.
A unanimous first-team All-Big Ten selection this season, Hurst put together a dominant year inside for the Wolverines at defensive tackle.
Through 12 games, he has 59 tackles (13 1/2 for a loss) and five sacks for the Wolverines, who have the No. 3-ranked total defense nationally.
Heisman voters occasionally have a defensive player in the mix, and his Outland Trophy win should have him on their radar, despite the Cougarsâ Group of Five status. It would help if Houston mounts a run for a New Yearâs Six bid.
This I donât get. So if we donât make a run for a NY6 bowl next year, that makes Ed (a Defensive Tackle) less of a player? I thought this award was for the âbestâ player and not the best player with the most wins.
Lamar Jackson had better numbers this year than last year when he won the Heisman. Just the way these things roll. Gotta play in a bunch of games which matter nationally. For us, that means being at the top of the G5.
I want to see him win the Outland again. That way itâs undisputed. Iâm not a fan of MVP awards (i.e. Heisman), thereâs always too much discrepancy involved from year to year.
Klingler had better numbers than Ware and didnât win it.
1st team on ESPN.

I donât understand how he wins the Outland Trophy for best interior lineman, but isnât 1st team All-American on every single list out there. Makes no sense to me.
My guess is a bunch of people forgot that he played one less game than his competitors and thought the stats were close enough to allow money conference bias to break the near tie.
Plus that chop block by the Temple back cost him one gameâlimping.
Different sets of voters.
Was he not a first teamer on this list last year?
Since ED is
WCFF First Team All American
FWAA First Team All American
AFCA First Team All American
Shouldnât he automatically receive the Consesus honor ?
