The pitfalls of parity: Diagnosing the condition of the Pac-12 and its tumble in college football’s arms race

Found another interesting article about the Pac-12’s problems, the second to last paragraph is the most interesting.

https://www.si.com/college-football/2019/07/24/pac-12-media-day-commissioner-larry-scott-improve-conference

“They set the market,” a college football administrator said, “and the market changed.” The Pac-12 has passed on overtures from ESPN to extend the TV deal, Scott confirmed, but the league passed. “We’re willing to wait,” he said. He calls it “strategic patience.” The Pac-12 is essentially betting on itself, hoping digital outlets join traditional networks for a bidding war in 2024. “I’m really confident in 2024 it’s going to look very different,” he said. “We’re going to look good. Five years feels like a long time these days.” That’s because it is. Five minutes in this age of Twitter is long. Five years is an eternity. There are other solutions, those familiar with the conference say. Some believe expansion east is necessary. Get in bigger football-centric markets and into more easterly time zones. The league is examining expansion, Scott said, but is unlikely to pursue that until after the new TV deal.

Can we survive 3-5 years until the PAC makes any type of decision? Even then they may decide not to expand.

Basically what we’re betting on at this point.

As for defense that’s an easy one - most African Americans on the west coast come from families that migrated from the south. We don’t reproduce at high rate and we’re only concentrated in several cities in the west compared to the South where the numbers are higher from Texas to DC. The elite d-linemen come from the South so genetics there are better compared to the west coast genetics which is more speed.

I doubt Scott will survive his 5 year “eternity”…

Thank you for posting.
The PAC is clearly waiting for Amazon, facebook, Netflix and other independent media outlet to get into the bidding room.
Amazon is clearly the one to watch. They are already involved in sports broadcasting mainly overseas. These article are a few months old or years old but read between the lines. They are “kicking” the tires with a clear ambition.
The “Prime” success is only missing sports right now.

They are either taking a huge gamble forsaking current income for the hope of future payoffs, or trying to justify the worst media deal in college sports history.

So far it’s looking like a big fail because they are missing out on millions of dollars which means they’ll be farther behind the curve in 5 years.

Plus, there’s no guarantee that amazon and Facebook will be interested in paying the PAC network any money.

As it is, many big east and aac and cougar faithful have kept pinning hopes that NBC or Amazon will swoop in and offer more than ESPN and seen the reality that they aren’t.

The PAC network as a wholly owned entity of the conference was a concept that is well past its life.

How many eye-balls are on the West Coast?

Almost twice the number of people. There are a lot of pirates that bring the number down.

Land Locked…they don’t want any other states involved in they’re party… just say Southwest Conference Again…but SWC had tons of Ranch boys to play football and no distractions from Hollywood Land… Say Southwest Conference Again… just my two cents
