UH's dangerous bet on football

I was one of those commuter students who voted for the stadium. The only thing I agree with the professor on is the escalating cost of the stadium and no announcement of final cost. However I hope that the current financial administrator is working for better results in that area than the administrator that was in place when the stadium was built.

The points made in the book I referenced earlier are that a marketing campaign cost equalling the notice a winning football program brings would far be more expensive than the football program. The number of applications and quality of applications both increase. Also, the athletic department puts money back in to the university even when the department is in the red. The department (through our donations) pays the full cost of those scholarships back to the university. The department also is likely charged some overhead on donations to Cougar Pride to cover the overall administrative costs of University development. The department may even be paying rent, expenses and other costs associated with their facilities.

I also know the amount of giving increases, even if it is mostly aimed towards athletics. I give money back to other departments that I might not feel as inclined to do except that I make those larger (than my non CP donations) donations to CP.

Here’s a question… let’s say we dropped football (as was considered at one time) or dropped down to a lower tier of football or never had football in the first place… would all the money spent on football be there to spend on all these other areas?

Answer: No.

How would he like to be a professor at a school like A&M Kingsville, UT Rio Grande, or McMurry State? They don’t spend nearly as much on football. I bet his Honors French History and The Human Situation would be just as prestigious.

I think you could have pushed that even more in terms of the free advertising nationwide for the school. Throw in all the talk on news stations, websites, radio, etc. there is a ton of noise made by the University of Houston, even if they are only talking about our football team.

There are some studies out there about a positive impact made by successful athletics. More kids want to go to a school with a good football team. TCU is a good example as they used to mainly get local kids, now they get applications from all over the country. No body knew what TCU was outside of Texas before they had a good football team. Acceptance rates factor into university rankings and also more applications means you can select better qualified students (which boosts incoming SAT scores, helps graduation rates, etc).

TCU is a good example of the positive aspect. They got a lot more applications from average students. How about non-P5 universities like UH, SMU, UNT, San Diego State, FIU, LaTech, Cinci, UConn, Memphis, etc? Are athletics a good draw? Have our dorms been filled due to sports loving students?

Nice, Parker!

UH also does more with MUCH less than the two schools he compares us to. This is even more amazing when you consider the number of first generation students we get as well as our overall demographics. It’s much easier for someone to graduate in 4-6 years when they don’t have to work or worry about if there will be food on the table at home.

I took classes with an amazing lady at UH in the 1990s. She was in her late 30s and had been in and out of UH for over a decade. Her story though? She was freaking living in a homeless shelter because she was putting all of her earnings towards school.

I’d also like to ask this a&&hat why he doesn’t work at UT or A&M… he seems to penis envy the hell outta those two places.

Thanks guys. Appreciate the help.

Great reply.

He is actually in denial.
Unfortunately this is what happened in the mid 90’s times a 100. Make no mistakes about this. He and a few of his cohorts want the end of U of H sports altogether. This has been an ongoing battle.
Again, CougarRed,ask him how he feels about the PUF? What about redirecting his energy toward it?
uta has the PUF we do not. End of discussion docteur emeritus.
Man, I would love to give him my two cents in French. If you do happen to actually speak to him I will be more than happy to let him know how I feel. I promise I won’t use any French swear words.
While I was in School I had a few interesting discussions with my political science Professors. I could actually debate them on the true consequences of socialism. Yes, they were irritated with me but it made the class lively.
The traits of a good Professor is to be open minded, open for debate. Dr. Zaretsky seems to be neither.
It begs the question. What the hell is he doing at U of H? To go out of his way and to get the chron to relay his vitriol for all to hear is truly anti U of H. There is something else that we do not know. Again, I am all for free speech but Mrs. Khator is surely irritated.

Zaretsky had no business making personal attacks in his rebuttal.

That ass needs to be happy he’s got a job. I work in the corporate world and I’m pretty sure if I came out and bashed my employer like that I’d be gone the next day. What a dick.

Zaretsky is Exhibit A for why tenure should be abolished.

With tenure you can live in fantasy land.

My wife is an SMU professor and it’s challenging to see staff laid off when the AD is running a nearly $20M deficit and head football coach makes about 2x what the president does.

True, that’s not real world either.

It is an interesting point because the misconception is always out there. The HC and his staff are usually “funded” by boosters. That goes hand in hand.

Do not challenge Parker! Not a good idea. Well done sir.

The professors want more money and they think that getting rid of athletics will increase their pay. Actually it’s just the opposite. Without athletics being the flagship for the university, we would get far fewer dollars in donations and have fewer quality students.

I think it is pretty cool that a dialog is actually taking place.

I hope @CougarRed sends a letter to the Chronicle and they publish it. We need the dialogue to take place more than just on Coogfans.

Swing and a miss again by the Chronicle and this prof. They need to let the sports department proofread this before publishing. He gets some basic facts wrong about how athletics departments operate, how coach’s salaries are paid or how facilities are funded.
