University of Notre Dame and its moniker

A bit of history behind the University of Notre Dame and the “fighting Irish” moniker

“Now you know the rest of the story”

It was originally an ethnic slur that ended up being embraced by the school and its students.

sorta like our missing toe hand sign or Ya Woo Cougars

Except that those aren’t ethnic slurs based on negative stereotypes.

Maybe its the Irish in me that is too stupid to be offended by it. 100% Irish by the way.

Coog51, I love Ireland and I am partly Gaelic but the University of Notre Dame has nothing to do with being Irish.

Indeed it doesn’t. It was actually founded by FRENCH Catholic priests from Canada, hence its French name, which means “University of Our Lady” in that language.

Half Irish heritage here.
