USF Game 3 Thread (L 5-4)

The double-edged sword of this conference striking again. 5 very solid teams that beat up on each other, so none really get any credit.

Looking at the schedule, who do you think has the inside track to the regular season title?

USF has ECU, @UConn, @UCF.
Houston has UConn, @Tulane, Cincy.
UCF has @Tulane, @Cincy, USF.
UConn has @Houston, USF, ECU.
Tulane has UCF, Houston, @Memphis.

Looks like everyone has 2 series left with the other 4 contenders, and 1 against the bottom 3. Tulane gets their 2 tougher series at home. USF’s remaining schedule looks the most difficult, with a (perhaps) mean reverting ECU and their 2 series against contenders on the road.

Tulane lost to ECU 5-3, so we are in a 5 way tie for 1st

  1. USF 9-6
  2. UCF 9-6
  3. Houston 9-6
  4. UConn 9-6
  5. Tulane 9-6
  6. Cincy 6-9
  7. Memphis 5-10
  8. ECU 4-11

Man, tough loss. Hard to win on the road in this conference, especially when you already have 2 starting pitchers out and your 3rd goes down in the 3rd.

Still like our chances the rest of the way as long as the injuries don’t keep piling up like they have been. Hopefully, King comes back next week (and maybe Romero) and then hopefully we see Padgett back soon as well.

Freshman Fred Villarreal made his first start of his young career and was dealing through 2.0 innings, until an apparent injury forced him to hand the ball over to sophomore Aaron Fletcher to the leadoff hitter in the third inning.

Villarreal worked 2.0 shutout innings, allowing just one hit with one walk.

Fletcher induced a strikeout to the first hitter he faced in the third and went 4.0 solid innings of the bullpen, allowing just one run on five hits with one walk and three strikeouts.

Freshman Tyler Bielamowicz made an appearance to start the bottom of the seventh, but exited after one out and a walk. Junior Joey Pulido took over and tossed 1.2 innings, allowing three runs on three hits with one walk and two strikeouts, but unfortunately suffered the loss – falling to 2-3 on the year.

Good news, directly from Villarreal. We’ll need him; been very impressed with him this year.

Also, even though we went 1-3 this week, we ended up in the same spot in the RPI as last week and 1 spot ahead of USF.
