I have previous commitments I am trying to move around to make the game with my family. I was not expecting a Dec 17 bowl game, but am excited for the match up with SDSU. I think we really got the best possible scenario: great destination, national audience on ABC, against a good opponent.

Well we’ll get to see what a conference game match up would look like had SDSU and Boise joined the American.

ESPN’s storyline for the Vegas Bowl -

Las Vegas Bowl presented by Geico: Houston vs. San Diego State
(3:30 p.m., ABC, Sam Boyd Stadium, Las Vegas)
Houston brings the nation’s No. 3 rushing defense to Sin City to face San Diego State’s Donnel Pumphrey, a Las Vegas native who ranks second nationally in rushing yards (2,018). Who gets the edge? Houston’s motivation level is a concern, and Pumphrey had a big day in his return home. San Diego State 34, Houston 28.

So we’re the underdog. We all know what this means.

9. Las Vegas Bowl – Houston vs. San Diego State – Dec. 17, 3:30 p.m.: Year in and year out the Las Vegas Bowl always finds itself with a great matchup. This season is no different as Houston (minus Tom Herman) gets to take on the Mountain West champions. These are two good teams that should provide a compelling game.

Ranking all 40 college football bowls, from first to worst

10 Las Vegas (Dec. 17): San Diego State (10-3) vs. Houston (9-3)
Vegas has a way of landing those sneaky-good matchups. Aztecs star Donnel Pumphrey needs 108 yards to break Ron Dayne’s career FBS rushing record (6,397). Houston’s third-ranked rushing defense is allowing 97.9.

8. Las Vegas Bowl (Houston vs. San Diego State, Dec. 17, 3:30 p.m., ABC)
This is a nifty matchup, with Greg Ward Jr. and the well-regarded Cougars heading west to face San Diego State and TB Donnell Pumphrey. Entering the final games of his career, Pumphrey needs 108 rushing yards to pass Ron Dayne as the FBS career leading rusher.

2. Las Vegas Bowl (12/17, ABC): Houston vs San Diego State
The opening day of bowl season features three games on this list as the best one will be the Las Vegas Bowl. Vegas always seems to have great bowl matchups featuring the MWC and the Pac 12 but since the Pac 12 didn’t have enough bowl teams they scooped up the best G5 team available.

Houston and San Diego State are two of the best five teams in the G5 with recognizable names across the board. Donnel Pumphrey is one of the best running backs in the country. Ed Oliver is one of the best interior linemen in the country. This is going to be one of the better played bowls this season. Throw in the fact that Major Applewhite will be making his coaching debut and this has the makings of must-see TV.

Las Vegas Bowl matchup draws rave reviews from national media

While the teams aren’t from Power Five conferences, they are two of the best schools from the Group of Five conferences (American Athletic Conference and Mountain West). It also doesn’t hurt that one school pulled off two of the biggest upsets of the season (Houston’s wins over Oklahoma and Louisville) and the other has the second-leading rusher in college football history (San Diego State’s Donnel Pumphrey, who played locally at Canyon Springs High).
