Volleyball Takes Undefeated Conference Record on Road at Wichita State (W 3-1) and Tulsa (W 3-1)

Houston, in the midst of a four-match road trip, started the first leg with a pair victories at Tulane and Temple to move to 4-0 in American Athletic Conference play for the first time since 2001. With those two wins, the Cougars have now win 10 of their last 15 matches.

Each one of those contests with the Green Wave and Owls went to the distance, marking the eighth and ninth time this season the Cougars have played in a five-set match, which is more than any other team in the nation. Overall, Houston has competed in six consecutive five-set contests, having won their last five in a row.

Crazy how this team has finally found its stride. There’s not a squad in conference outside of Cincy or UCF that scares me.

The University of Houston Volleyball team continued its unblemished start to conference play, as the Cougars took down Wichita State in four sets (21-25, 25-20, 25-15, 25-16) on Friday night.

With the win, the Cougars (11-9, 5-0 American) have put together their best start to league action in 18 years and have now won their past three matches against the Shockers (4-13, 1-4 American). Friday’s victory also marks Houston’s sixth consecutive win in a row.

Defense played a pivotal role in the win, as four different Houston players recorded 10 or more digs. Senior libero Katie Karbo tallied a match-high 18 digs, while senior outside hitters Megan Duncan and Claire Karsten posted 11 digs and 10 digs, respectively. Junior setter Abby Irvine recorded 15 digs, which ties a season-high. Houston’s defense also posted 12.0 blocks, marking the fourth time the Cougars have reached double-digit blocks in conference action.

Duncan (10 kills, 11 digs) and Irvine (39 assists, 15 digs) rounded out their performances with double-doubles. Freshman outsider hitter Abbie Jackson led the time with 16 kills, the 10th time she’s tallied a team-high in that category.
