100% agree
And we dropped 52 points on them when they came too.
OU/UT home stadiums isn’t the Cotton Bowl.
Why?
You get a nickname by earning the nick name.
That means we have a wining record every year.
That mean you don’t lose home games.
That means you don’t lose home games to lesser teams with directions in their names.
That means you fill up that “cage” otherwise you are an “empty cage”
Good names come about organically. They are not created by a pollster in a cubicle in a marketing department.
I think we could call the stadium the sweatbox the first half of the season when we have early games and are getting roasted. The latter half of the season we can call it the icebox. Not because it gets really cold, but because lately we’ve been drinking a lot more beer as the season goes on.
Why do we always try to force new ‘traditions’ on our programs?
Because theres not enough old ones and change is inevitable.
With all of the security, we should call it the ‘Airport’.
I always like “The Sauna”.
What was that castles name the Thundercats lived in? Thundera? We could call it that? lol Man, forget this planet.
Yeah, but that’s a dry heat. The Steam Bath would be more appropriate.
By the way.
For you young folks.
The word “cage” in a sports context is usually in reference to basketball.
As in “Cougar Cagers”
EVEN before many of you were in diapers … we use to have a small building next to the old basketball court called … The Cougar Den …
Cougars DON’T live in cages or houses or glass enclosures where Shasta once lived on campus or zoos …
BUT IN THE WILDLIFE …
A cougar den …
our stadium should be called …
THE DEN!!! … or … COUGAR DEN!!!
Does North Carolina, South Carolina, Southern Cal, West Virginia, Northwestern…count toward “directional schools”???
It needs to be packed and rowdy on a consistent basis and especially when on TV
Domesticated or not, if you get in a cage with a Cougar you’re going to understand the Cage is for the human’s protection, not the other way around.
A lot of stadiums with famous nicknames are filled with 70,000+ fans accustomed to winning national championships. We’re not one of those franchises.
To be fair, the names have to come from somewhere. Not everything is completely organic and appears out of thin air. I also remember we had a pretty long winning streak at home…wasn’t it like 20 or 15 consecutive games (not completely sure)? A big part of those home wins were Bowser and E-Rob. One of them tweeted an opponent from another school a couple years back saying something like “ya’ll can’t beat us in the Cage”. The name has been established at that point.
To the OP’s original question, it’s already been nicknamed The Cage; not everybody is on board with it for the various reasons above. But then again, you can refuse to call an apple an apple, but that doesn’t change the fact that most individuals will call it an apple.
