Not full time because he was our only backup RB too
Great game. On the flipside, SMU got their revenge in ‘22 when we gave up 77 points in one of the most embarrassing losses ever to SMU. That’s the game that should’ve ended CDHs coaching tenure at UH
Dang I had forgotten about that lol
I guess that is true in a way. But my perception is SMU’s revenge game came way before the 2022 game. At least in their minds.
Two such games i remember were in Dallas (I attended to see the unfortunate results) :
In 1992, 41-16 ponies. I remember SMU fans visiting our UH side of the stadium in the 4th quarter (with revenge signs) celebrating the revenge finally reached for the 95-21 massacre. To me, that was the actual revenge game if only allowed to choose one.
And another that sticks out to me…in 2012, 72-42 ponies. The crazy pick-6 game if i remember correctly.
I know this will be an unpopular take but will say it anyway. It’s never ok to put 95 on someone. At some point, good sportsmanship should step in. You never see it in today’s game. I remember Jerry Granville mentioning this game after the Falcons put a whooping on the Oilers in Pardee’s first game as coach.
I am one that believes you play the full game to the best of your abilities and let your compeitor be responsible for themselves. (Barring safety of course).
But I still do understand your sentiment.
Yet…
Were you at that 95-21 game?
What exactly should UH have done in the 2nd quarter when approaching 70 points? Take a knee?
What should Notre Dame have done differently a few weeks later against SMU? Fumble on purpose? Stop tackling?
Should Carl Lewis try to slow down if his lead is too large in a 100 meter race?
I just believe that the expectation in any competition is for all participants to do their best. And if one team wins by a lot (even if it’s not my favorite team) so be it.
Lee corso looks like and has similar mannerisms to mel brooks. It’s uncanny
I agree with Dean, other than fumble or run out of bounds on purpose like ND, what should we have done?
-Every roster player played.
-Ware played only 1 half. Klingler was our only backup and he played the entire 2nd half. We only had 254 yards passing in the 2nd half compared to 517 in the 1st.
-We had 0 TEs so we couldn’t go into a run formation.
-We only had 2 RBs. Spoon had 15 carries for 209 yards and 3 TDs, more yards per carry than yards per pass attempt. Anders played some RB but also some WR. He also averaged >8 yards per carry
-SMU played 6-7 in the box and man on the WRs. It becomes a player safety issue for the RBs to try to run and block 6-7 with 5 OL and 2 roster RBs.
-We only had 7 healthy WRs which is why Anders also played WR. Hard to sub in WRs when you line up 4-5 every play or sub RB
-We did not blitz a single time all game and we had some talent that could have destroyed their QB.
-We played 4-5 in the box all game with a prevent defense. With a R&S, you’re supposed to run against that. But they only had 24 rushes and 62 passes. If they ran the ball more, it would have killed more clock. But their 32 incompletions stopped the clock every time giving us more possessions.
-We took a knee 3 times inside their 20 to end the game. Even a single hand off would have likely scored a TD. We had gained 60 yards on that drive running the ball.
I blame SMU coaches for 3-5 TDs because of play calling and clock management.
I get what you’re saying but they are certainly ways to take the foot off the gas pedal.Teams do it ALL the time. Run, run, run, and while they’re doing that, run the play clock down to 2 seconds. Mix in some screen passes. Do NOT throw the ball deep. There are ways to do it.
I understand the idea and agree that can be an acceptable concept. Most folks agree with that as a good approach.
I’m contending though that we basically did everything we could do on that day to let off the gas starting in the 2nd quarter. Again, I ask if you were there. I was…it wasnt on tv.
If wanted, I think UH could have scored 140 points based on what SMU did in that day. I honestly have never seen an outmatched opponent so blatantly play a role in causing their own extreme blowout…and then cry about the margin. The entire game, play after play.
And as I mentioned before, in my opinion it is better sportsmanship to play the game normally without a complete pity surrender. In my opinion (I’m likely in the minority here), if the losing team doesn’t want their opponent’s best effort, they really should forfeit the game (before or during the game) instead of playing it.
But even saying that, as surprising as it sounds given the score and stats, UH did what they could short of taking a knee, and played the scheduled game.
I was not at the game but I will maintain there’s no reason to put 95 on someone (unless it’s UT). There’s a quote that Jack Pardee was upset with Jenkins for continuing to throw the ball. He may have even threatened his job. I suspect Jenkins big ego may have gotten in the way. Anyway, no one’s changing my mind on this. Good discussion though!
I was at the game. Other than starting in the second quarter blatantly grounding the ball or throwing it out of bounds or taking a knee or running out of bound, we did everything we could. We played every player that was dressed.
Run? Our RBs had 259 yards on 21 carries. That’s 12.3 yards per carry. Spoon averaged 13.8. We averaged 12.6 yards per passing attempt. 12.7 yards per pass in the 2nd half. Not much difference.
But again I’m going to bring up player safety. When your 2 RBs have 259 yards and you’re blocking 7 with 5, you can’t expect 40+ carries especially when 1 RB is playing WR most of the game…
As for short passes, there were a few bombs, but short passes often went for long yards because they were playing man vs superior athletes. But do you know what often happens to WRs who catch short passes when that is what the D is looking for? They get blown up. We already had at least 3 injured WRs going into the game and 1 more got hurt during the game.
Spoon and Anders had 13 receptions for 106 yards. Many of Anders’ catches were at WR but none of Spoon’s were. Combined yardage: Spoon had 246 yards on 19 touches with 3 TDs.
I was there. We could have scored a lot more than 100 easily.
I guess you’ll complain that we scored a 2 point conversion in the 2nd half… ignoring the mishandled snap.
Pertinent stat: SMU’s RBs averaged almost a yard more per carry than SMU’s yards per pass attempt. That supports my idea we were setting up our D to allow the run which would have used more clock, but SMU refused to do it.
this is how rivalries are born…eff schmoo…
The lesson for taking one’s foot off the pedal came in the Cotton Bowl and Notre Dame was very thankful.
Then came the BCS era and if you didn’t beat the snot out of someone your rankings got penalized for it.
