And this article says he had an offer from Houston back in November:

Would be a nice (BOOM) way to start the 2018 class! Excellent player. I truly believe that coach Sampson will bring in an excellent class. Maybe his gold standard at UH. Everything is there for him to do so.
Been at UH for 4 years now, and has won. He now has had enough time to build relationships with local players, and HS coaches. The new arena would be here for that class in 2018. Also, the practice facility is off the charts niceee. He even has a slogan #forthecity

He even open up a personal twitter ,and is actively promoting the school, and program. So he can definitely relate to today’s players, and AAU coaches.

Sampson can finally start selling our new stadium and that should help a bunch. Hopefully Rob comes back next year and has another bang up year with a little help in the paint…

That kid is not 6’3. He was at the game Sunday vs East Carolina. He’s closer to 6’6 and he’s being recruited as point guard. We offered him his freshman season. Problem is power 5 programs are turning up the heat on him. Keeping him home is looking bleak. Hope we get him.

The texashoops.com article has him listed at 6’5".

thats about right.

But UH also is opening a new arena. I wouldn’t count out UH for that reason. If this was last year, then yes I would say it would look bleak.

UCLA, Kansas, Michigan, and basically the entire Big 12 are tugging on him. Don’t like our chances. Opening a new arena will not put us ahead any of them. I’m keeping my fingers crossed.

Coach Dickey brought us House, Thomas, & Knowles with the worse basketball facilities in the country. Just saying. Kansas, Ohio St, Texas & Louisville wanted them badly. I’m actually buying into CKS that he could land him with UH’s new facilities & his resume to win.

What I’m basically saying is if coach Sampson can’t bring in a stellar class in 2018, it’s simply never going to happen under his watch. There is enough there to entice recruits to come to UH even if they’re not in a P5. You can still compete for a National title in Houston, and UH plays in a conference with power houses like UConn & Cincinnati along with SMU.

Dickey was a nice guy and could recruit, but his inability to win with those recruits really hurt us on the the local scene. First came the Joe Young fiasco, and then after Dickey was let go House and Thomas stormed off to other places. Sampson has had a ton of negative to overcome since taking over, and personally I think he is doing it the right way.
Also Sampson’s history shows that he is going to be prone to recruit kids who best fit his coaching style. He is doing it the right way. We are not going to get the local studs in all probability, but we will get our share of good, solid players who we now know Sampson can coach up…I love our future…

I do agree with you as far as studs (5 star players) will probably not come to UH, but I have a great feeling CKS will bring in a couple of 4 star players (good) in 2018.

I’d be surprised if Rob comes back. Our entire frontcourt will be two juco transfers that barely average 20 minutes per game because of foul trouble and a true freshman. Couple that with having no home court the entire season and we will be lucky to finish conference play with a 6-12 record.

Interesting:: If that is what the prognosticators are saying, may as well fire CKS & bring in the new coach who can start recruiting for 2018. Js

Both Gray and Sampson have stated in the last two weeks that Gray will be back next season. Things can change, but, they both sounded pretty sure of it.

Our frontcourt next year will consist of Davis, Sangoyomi, Brady, Grant, and White. Chance it also includes Chris Harris and/or another JUCO/Grad transfer big as we still have 2 scholarships available at this moment. Even still, it isn’t as if the group that will be here will be any worse than what we had here this year.

This team won’t be 6-12 in conference next season.

Corey Davis & Harris with Gray coming back is a NCAA tournament team. Don’t care if they’re playing at the YMCA. At the end of the day they’re still playing in Houston.

Unless Rob needs money real bad I think he comes back to improve himself. Time will tell on that one. If he does return then we should have a better team next year. I like Gabe and Brooks fighting it out for one small forward position, with White stepping in at small forward and the two 6-9 JC kids fighting for playing time at center. I am intrigued by the 6-6 freshman guard coming in from Mansfield and it will be interesting to see if Harris qualifies for next year.
And don’t forget Davis, if he brings his game up a notch or two he could be starting also at forward. Vanbeck also will chip in off the bench…the pg from San Jac would be a neat addition, but I think he is leaning elsewhere…

I hope Chris Harris makes it in for christ sake; I don’t want it to turn into another Davell Lauder 2.0 :smiling_imp::smiling_imp::smiling_imp::smiling_imp:

There’s NO SUCH THING as a “power 5” program in men’s basketball. That is ESPN propaganda and it’s crap. Ask Gonzaga, or Xaviet or George Washington. Hell as SMU. Don’t feed the SOBs by playing their game. Where do you think UT would have stood in the AAC? Not in the top 4 or even 5.

UH was 12-6 in conference play this year. Looks like every team will be back and stronger next year. UCF with Fall could be really good and I would be surprised if Memphis stays down. Cincy looks to have the best class in the conference. Bottom line 12 - 6 in a stronger conference with maybe 4 tournament teams may be a good record playing on the road all season.

Just committed to OU. Oh well, I’m hoping we get Ledee or Liddell for 2018.
