If you lose 1 game all year, you still are in the playoffs. Even 2 in most cases if coming from Powerhouse program. These playoffs are long over due.
Actually, the playoffs are awesome for that reason. Iâm tired of seeing Bama or Georgia in the title game every season.
I mean itâs a playoff. This kind of result occurs when you give more than 2 teams, 4 teams a shot at a championship game. The system still isnât perfect but itâs an improvement over the past. Remember the NY Giants in 2007? They didnât win their division and beat an undefeated Pats team in the Superbowl.
By far the best CFP, maybe not perfect, but light years ahead of that garbage that came before. Canât wait to see our Coogs in it
utamafia should have never played that game. ASU got robbed.
Alabama lost to Auburn in the 2017 season and still won the national championship against Georgia another SEC team who actually won the SEC unlike Bama.
It doesnât matter. Theyâre SEC, so exceptions always have to be applied to them.
Yeah, and that sucked too.
You shouldnât be able to win a title without winning your league.
So if the Coogs happen to finish 2nd in BIG12 Basketball Conf play this go round, they shouldnât be able to compete for Natty?
Edit: sometimes 2 of the best teams in given year might reside in same Conf.
No matter the Sport, if they have great year , they should be able to compete for Natl Title. Whether its tennis, volleyball, baseball etc. Jmo.
It happens in the basketball tourney.
The basketball tourney is fun, but itâs also not a very good way to determine a champion. Thereâs a reason the NBA plays a Best-of-7.
T-Moar with all due respect⊠you have 30 Teams in NBA. THERE are over 350 teams in D1 Basketball last time i checked. MarchMadness is one of the greatest events in American Sports. N the beauty of it is how it allows the Geoge Masons & Loyola of Chicago Universities to put their Schools in the limelight in best way possible.
I like the idea of not having to be perfect ( slip up) n still be able to hold the Trophy.
Yeah, so?
You donât have to win your division in the regular season, nor do you have to be the best team during the regular season to win an NBA title either, much less to make the playoffs.
Why then should such a requirement to win your regular season league in order to make the playoffs exist in college football, as you suggest? Hint: it shouldnât.
Hell, in both the NBA and the NHL, the 8th best team in each conference gets in the playoffs. In the NHL, an 8th seed won it all in 2012; doesnât matter that they didnât win their division. And thatâs WITH best of seven series, so Iâm not sure what your point is.
The Rockets won it all in 1995 as a SIXTH seed.
They made the Finals in 1981 with literally a LOSING (40-42) record.
Iâve seen Astros teams that won over 100 games bolo in the playoffs.
Wildcards have won World Series and NFL playoffs. Winning their regular season division was not required for them to make the playoffs, nor did it diminish their eventual title in any way.
For that matter, not requiring a regular season title to make the playoffs in no way diminishes the playoff itself. ON THE CONTRARY, it makes the playoffs that much better by making a Cinderella story possible.
Playing best of seven in pro leagues does NOT create a requirement that you win your league during the regular season to either make the playoffs, or win it all.
It is possible in all pro leagues to both make and even win the championship without doing that. Why then, should college football be any different?
The principle is the same everywhere: SETTLE IT ON THE FIELD IN THE PLAYOFFS, whether by single elimination or a set of series.
That hasnât really been possible in major college football until literally THIS year. And thatâs what made THIS college football national title chaseâŠ.the BEST ever.
In 1983, the Houston Cougars won their conference in basketball and finished the regular season ranked #1. That same year, NC State wasnât close to doing either during the regular season.
We all know how that worked out.
Case closed!
I cant stand the idea of seeing Ohio state every FLIPPINâ year any more than BamaâŠA 2 loss Buckeye team that finished 4th in their league got a bid because of WHO THEY AREâŠI have a BIG problem with that.
Couple ways to think about a sports champion
First: win each step then move on with every game meaning something. ie. win your division/conference, then win the national title. This would show the value of the conference championship and/or division champions along the way.
Second: Which team is playing the best at the end of the year and ignore how they got there. This means that regular season does not mean as much as random losses can be overlooked. This fits with choosing who they think is best at then end of the year and letting those teams play for the national title.
Here is why you are wrong.
Ohio State beat the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 9th, and 10th best teams in the country this year.
That makes any argument that Ohio State either a) shouldnât have been in the running or playoffs, or b) doesnât deserve recognition as the nationâs best teamâŠ.LAUGHABLE!!!
Ohio State, better than any other team in the country showed that they were the best ON THE FIELD.
Just look at that graphic!
And in the end, thatâs what the playoffs is all aboutâŠSETTLING IT ON THE FIELD!!!
Ohio State did that like no one else could.
See by contrast, SMU had the best regular season record in their conferenceâŠ.yet couldnât beat the third best Big 12 team in the regular season, and got booty stomped in the playoffs.
It ainât ALL about the regular season.
That matters, but you need to look deeper than that.
HopefullyâŠ.this graphic will help in that regard.
Thats rubbish⊠SICK of hearing how great OSU is when they get EVERY advantage possible. Oregon beats them in regular season, wins the Big 10, and gets stuck playing them a month later. Penn State, who has the best chance to beat them, gets put in a bracket where they wont meet till the championship game. They came in 4th in the Big 10. They didnt EARN the right to be there. You want to be there? DONT lose to Michigan!!! INSTEAD they get rewardedâŠWHO cares what they did in the playoff?? The advantages they get make it almost impossible NOT to winâŠ
